Promoting Parental Involvement Among Latino Parents At Glen View Elementary School, Maricela Ortiz Jan 2007

Promoting Parental Involvement Among Latino Parents At Glen View Elementary School, Maricela Ortiz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project was designed to increase Latino parents' knowledge regarding how to get more involved in their children's education. Research has shown that children do better in school when their parents participate in their education. Therefore, the ultimately purpose of this project was to maximize children's full learning potential through coordinating a field trip to the library and giving to presentations, one on healthy habits at home and the other on homework strategies. When this project was completed, the participants indicated that their knowledge increased and that they felt more motivated to get more involved in their children's education.

Implementing Task-Based Teaching From The Ground Up: Considerations For Lesson Planning And Classroom Practice, William Comer Jan 2007

Implementing Task-Based Teaching From The Ground Up: Considerations For Lesson Planning And Classroom Practice, William Comer

Russian Language Journal

In the past twenty years, Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) has become a widely discussed approach to teaching foreign and second languages, and a significant body of literature has grown up around it. The approach has even been implemented on a large scale in some areas; for example, since 1990, instruction in Dutch as a second language in the Flemish areas of Belgium has been organized solely around the principles of TBLT (Van den Branden 2006, 13).

Community Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Refugees And Asylees In Miami-Dade And Broward Counties: An Analysis For The International Rescue Committee, Brianne Gilbert

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

This paper presents the findings of a research project on knowledge and attitudes about refugees and “asylees” in two South Florida counties. The project was a collaboration between the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an international NGO that assists refugees and asylees with resettlement in the United States and other countries, and four graduate students in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Florida International University in Miami. South Florida receives large numbers of refugees and asylees, principally from Latin America and the Caribbean, and the IRC was interested in finding out more about the knowledge and attitudes in the community …

Objectives. We examined rates of mental health–related service use (i.e., any, general medical, and specialty mental health services) as well as subjective satisfaction with and perceived helpfulness of care in a national sample of Asian Americans, with a particular focus on immigration-related factors.

Methods. Data were derived from the National Latino and Asian American Study (2002–2003).

Results. About 8.6% of the total sample (n=2095) sought any mental health–related services; 34.1% of individuals who had a probable diagnosis sought any services. Rates of mental health–related service use, subjective satisfaction, and perceived helpfulness varied by birthplace and by generation. US-born Asian Americans …

Opinions Of Students Enrolled In An Andalusian Bilingual Program On Bilingualism And The Program Itself, Francisco Ramos

School of Education Faculty Works

The Regional Ministry of Education of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia, an autonomous community in the South of Spain, has established several bilingual programs to improve language proficiency of its student population. The programs, which undertake second languages as vehicular languages at the classroom, encourage student’s bilingualism, academic development and positive attitudes toward other groups. The following paper examines opinions given by a group of students enrolled in an Andalusian bilingual program about those matters. Students had different positive opinions on bilingualism as well as the program in general; however, they had some doubts over the intellectual and cognitive benefits …

Programas Bilingües Y Formación De Profesores En Andalucía, Francisco Ramos

School of Education Faculty Works

For law students studying criminal procedure—or at least for those cramming for the exam—it becomes a mantra: government conduct only implicates the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches if it invades a “reasonable expectation of privacy.” This is not the contemporary definition of the word “search,” nor was it the definition at the time of the founding. But, via a well-intentioned concurrence by Justice Harlan in the famous 1967 case of Katz v. United States, it became the Court’s definition. This lack of fealty to the English language left some questions. For example, is determining whether someone has a “reasonable expectation …

Seasonal Variations Of Co2 And 222rn In A Mediterranean Sinkhole, Christelle Batiot-Guilhe, Jean-Luc Seidel, Hervé Jourde

KIP Articles

Carbon dioxide and 222Rn monitoring of the atmosphere of a Mediterranean sink hole - spring (SE France) during two hydrological cycles (from September 2004 to September 2006) showed seasonal variations with very high concentrations during summer (greater than 6% and 20 000 Bq/m3, respectively). Gas dynamics in caves often show seasonal variations.Meteorological parameters (barometric pressure and temperature mainly), cave geometry and fracture networks control exchanges between the cavity and outside atmosphere. Carbon dioxide and 222Rn may have different sources (atmosphere, soil, bedrock, deep gas diffusion, in situ oxidation of organic matter and, in some caves, the key role of swift …
