High- And Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphism In The North Qaidam And South Altyn Terranes, Western China, Chris G. Mattinson, C. A. Menold, Jian-Xin Zhang, D. K. Bird

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The North Qaidam and South Altyn terranes extend approximately 1000 km across the northern Tibetan Plateau, and five localities preserve evidence of Early Paleozoic high-pressure (HP) or ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism, including the presence of coesite, coesite pseudomorphs, and diamond. A review of the geology, petrology, and geochronology collected over the past 10 years since these localities were discovered supports a correlation of the North Qaidam and South Altyn terranes, offset 350-400 km across the Altyn Tagh fault. Geochronology interpreted to reflect eclogite-facies metamorphism yields ages between 500 and 420 Ma; detailed geochronology from one locality supports a protracted (tens of …

Recommender systems (RS) are being used by an increasing number of e-commerce sites to help consumers find the personally best products. We define here the criteria that a RS should satisfy, drawing on concepts from behavioral science, computational intelligence, and data mining. We present our conclusions from building the WiseUncle RS and give its general description. Rather than being an advisor for a particular application, WiseUncle is a generic RS, a platform for generating application-specific advisors.

Bred Meat--The Cultural Foundation Of The Factory Farm, David N. Cassuto Jan 2007

Bred Meat--The Cultural Foundation Of The Factory Farm, David N. Cassuto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article argues that the ability of large-scale industrial farms to commodify animals in the face of strong countervailing social forces stems in large part from the legal system’s embrace of a secularized but nonetheless deeply religious vision of human ascendancy. Within this belief system, animals comprise beings through whom we define ourselves by contrast and to whom we deny ingress to the legal system. The impulse to increase protections for nonhuman animals is offset by institutionally privileged categories of behavior that commodify nonhumans and strip them of legal defenses. The resulting lattice of laws purports to safeguard animals while …

Stock Prices And Economic Growth: Are They Related?, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh Jan 2007

Stock Prices And Economic Growth: Are They Related?, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper investigates the relationship between economic growth and stock prices in the U.S. Quarterly data on NASDAQ, DJIA, S&P 500 and real GDP ranging from the first quarter of 1971 to the fourth quarter of 2005 are analyzed. Cointegration test results indicate that while RGDP and S&P 500 are not cointegrated, RGDP and NASDAQ appear to be cointegrated. VEC analyses of the RGDP and NASDAQ data indicate that in the short-run, RGDP has a positive impact on stock prices. Further Granger causality testing of the data indicates that RGDP Granger -causes both changes in DJIA and S&P 500.

Bridge Damage Detection Using An Intelligent Engineering System, Dionysios N. Danilatos Jan 2007

Bridge Damage Detection Using An Intelligent Engineering System, Dionysios N. Danilatos

Masters Theses

"This thesis concerns the design of an algorithm that is capable to detect structural damage in civil infrastructure bridges. The algorithm, which will be dubbed Damage Diagnostics System throughout the thesis, is the software component of a broader Bridge Health Monitoring System. This broader system integrates software and hardware, such as sensors and data acquisition components...The rationale for the Structural Damage Diagnosis is based on the principle of the structural vibration testing. The Health Monitoring System captures the vibration signals, as the bridge responds to excitation from various sources. The purpose of the Diagnostic System is to extract information from the …

Equivalent Circuit For Transient Conduction And Convection Systems, Bassam Sabry Mohammad Abdelnabi Jan 2007

Equivalent Circuit For Transient Conduction And Convection Systems, Bassam Sabry Mohammad Abdelnabi

Masters Theses

"Transient response of a natural convection system is investigated by numerical simulation using FLUENT code. An Integrator Circuit analogy was recently proposed for natural convection system. The proposed analogy was further confirmed by these recent simulations. New simulation results also suggest that a natural convection system acts as a "Low Pass" filter for transients. Transient transmission/attenuation factor was found to be a function of both fluid properties and the flow characteristics. Transmission/attenuation factor was also found to be a strong function of fluctuation frequency"--Abstract, page iv.

Probabilistic Modeling Of Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata, Saket Srivastava Jan 2007

Probabilistic Modeling Of Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata, Saket Srivastava

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As CMOS scaling faces a technological barrier in the near future, novel design paradigms are being proposed to keep up with the ever growing need for computation power and speed. Most of these novel technologies have device sizes comparable to atomic and molecular scales. At these levels the quantum mechanical effects play a dominant role in device performance, thus inducing uncertainty. The wave nature of particle matter and the uncertainty associated with device operation make a case for probabilistic modeling of the device. As the dimensions go down to a molecular scale, functioning of a nano-device will be governed primarily …

Year 12 Curriculum Content And Achievement Standards, Gabrielle Matters, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment and Reporting

This study provides the first Australia-wide picture of what is expected of students taking five subjects—English (including Literature), Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Australian History—in the final years of secondary school. The study addresses three broad questions: What is currently taught in these five subjects across Australia? This question is addressed through an analysis of the content of senior school curricula in the five subjects in all Australian states and territories. The study documents similarities and differences in approaches and in the content (subject matter and skills/understandings) emphasised in state and territory curriculum documents. What is the 'essential' content (subject matter …

Computational Trust In Web Content Quality: A Comparative Evalutation On The Wikipedia Project, Pierpaolo Dondio

Articles

The problem of identifying useful and trustworthy information on the World Wide Web is becoming increasingly acute as new tools such as wikis and blogs simplify and democratize publication. It is not hard to predict that in the future the direct reliance on this material will expand and the problem of evaluating the trustworthiness of this kind of content become crucial. The Wikipedia project represents the most successful and discussed example of such online resources. In this paper we present a method to predict Wikipedia articles trustworthiness based on computational trust techniques and a deep domain-specific analysis. Our assumption is …

Dialectical Tensions In Stroke Survivor Relationships, Kimberly N. Leezer Jan 2007

Dialectical Tensions In Stroke Survivor Relationships, Kimberly N. Leezer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stroke is an unpredictable and life-altering medical occurrence which causes immediate change in stroke survivors' relationships. Previous communication researchers have focused on the dialectical tensions experienced by stroke survivors themselves. This study sought to discover dialectical tensions experienced by spouses of stroke survivors, how those dialectical tensions compare to those experienced by stroke survivors, and how time affects the dialectical tensions experienced by spouses of stroke survivors. Sixteen spouses of stroke survivors participated in interviews, and five tensions were ultimately discovered: self-preference -- partner-preference, realism -- idealism, freedom constraint, fear -- content, and emotional release -- emotional reservation. Three dialectical …

The Limits Of Laïcité: Islam And The Headscarf Issue In France, Lindsay Blaire Beeman Jan 2007

The Limits Of Laïcité: Islam And The Headscarf Issue In France, Lindsay Blaire Beeman

Honors Theses

Laicite is the term given to France’s complex policy of separation between church and state. Developing out of a long and tumultuous religious history, laicite set out to resolve the problems that the French state had with religion by eliminating its presence in the public sphere. At its inception, the policy did not have clearly stated objectives. As a result, it was not equally applied and many problems ensued. The most recent debacle involving the application of laicite was Vaffaire dii foulard, or headscarf affair. Citing the principle of laicite, numerous teachers and principals in French schools required Muslim students …
