Increasing Return On Investment For Standardized Patient Training Programs Through Development Of Cost-Effective Programs, Paul Perea

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

Higher stakes now exist for standardized patient programs to deliver student performance success in light of the required USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills exam. Identifying and increasing the educational return on the financial investment for these programs is critical as programs are challenged to demonstrate their value to the organization. Rising expectations and finite budgets create an impetus to provide quality outcomes in the most efficient way. Implementing the instructional design process creates systematic training through a scientific approach to training and evaluation. Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Although state education agencies, teacher preparation institutions, and public schools often combine high incidence disabilities into one category and one placement, the students grouped under this label often have diverse educational needs. This study compares two samples of secondary special education teachers working at the same schools to examine programming across disability category. One sample consists of teachers of students with learning disabilities (LD) and the other, teachers of students with mild mental impairments (MMI). Efforts Toward National Educational Reform: An Essentialist Political Agenda, Thomas A. Kessinger Jan 2007

Efforts Toward National Educational Reform: An Essentialist Political Agenda, Thomas A. Kessinger

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this manuscript is to summarize the major provisions of four salient national government initiatives and relate each one to an “essentialist” political agenda that is based on the essentialist philosophy or theory of education. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, A Nation at Risk, America 2000/Goals 2000, and No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 are reviewed to denote a trend that projects the national government as a dominant player in public educational reform. Evidence is offered, by way of primary source documents, to establish a link between the four aforementioned actions and the essentialist way of …

Mentoring For Beginning Principals: Revisiting The Past Or Preparing For The Future?, John C. Daresh Jan 2007

Mentoring For Beginning Principals: Revisiting The Past Or Preparing For The Future?, John C. Daresh

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper describes a study of mentoring programs for beginning principals in two different urban school districts. In both settings, the goal of mentoring was said to be support for instructional leadership behaviors by novice principals. This represents an alternative to traditional mentoring schemes designed solely to ensure that first year principals “survive” their first year of service by demonstrating mastery of managerial skills.

Interviews of twenty mentor principals were carried out on location in two school districts. All mentors were selected by their districts because they had demonstrated strong instructional leadership skills while serving as campus administrators. All individuals …

Lighting The Spirit World, Stephanie E. Robinson Jan 2007

Lighting The Spirit World, Stephanie E. Robinson

Theses

Stephanie E. Robinson's Master's thesis, Lighting the Spirit World, explores the lighting design process for a production of Blithe Spirit at Lindenwood University. As part of her MFA in Theatre with a focus on lighting design, Robinson details her approach to creating a lighting scheme that enhances the play’s supernatural themes. She examines historical and modern lighting techniques, analyzing how lighting technology evolved from the 1940s to contemporary methods.

The thesis discusses the practical challenges faced during the production, including budget limitations that prevented the use of advanced lighting equipment. Robinson adapted by creatively utilizing existing stage lighting fixtures, …

Short Story Collection: Final Project, Aisha S. Abram Jan 2007

Short Story Collection: Final Project, Aisha S. Abram

Theses

This collection of six short stories all center their plots on the actions and responses of a strong female character. I took this approach because I feel there are too few female characters in the world of fiction.

In the story ''Angie" a young girl befriends a strange man Living under the family's house. The story focuses on her mother's fear and ultimately her acceptance of this odd friend.

The story of "Chelsea'' centers on the decision that Chelsea, a common waitress, must make to change her situation. In the story she meets a trucker who is like many of …

See You Soon: An E-Memoir, Leigh C. Kolb Jan 2007

See You Soon: An E-Memoir, Leigh C. Kolb

Theses

This thesis is a creative nonfiction piece, which uses e-mails between two people to create its text. It is in an epistolary style, which historically is a style in which letters, diary entries or newspaper clippings are used to construct a story. Epistolary (which comes from the word "epistle," or letter) novels often are used to show a developing relationship between people, which is precisely what the proceeding piece, See You Soon, aims to do.

The following document is constructed out of thousands of e-mails between the author and her now-husband. The e-mails were weeded through and woven together to …
