Field Assessment Of A Model Tuberculosis Outbreak Response Plan For Low-Incidence Areas, Laura Freimanis Hance, Karen R. Steingart, Christine G. Hahn, Lisa Pascopella, Charles M. Nolan Oct 2007

Field Assessment Of A Model Tuberculosis Outbreak Response Plan For Low-Incidence Areas, Laura Freimanis Hance, Karen R. Steingart, Christine G. Hahn, Lisa Pascopella, Charles M. Nolan

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: For a regional project in four low-incidence states, we designed a customizable tuberculosis outbreak response plan. Prior to dissemination of the plan, a tuberculosis outbreak occurred, presenting an opportunity to perform a field assessment of the plan. The purpose of the assessment was to ensure that the plan included essential elements to help public health professionals recognize and respond to outbreaks.

Methods: We designed a semi-structured questionnaire and interviewed all key stakeholders involved in the response. We used common themes to assess validity of and identify gaps in the plan. A subset of participants provided structured feedback on the …

Contrasting Infection Strategies In Generalist And Specialist Wasp Parasitoids Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Todd A. Schlenke, Jorge Morales, Shubha Govind, Andrew G. Clark Oct 2007

Contrasting Infection Strategies In Generalist And Specialist Wasp Parasitoids Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Todd A. Schlenke, Jorge Morales, Shubha Govind, Andrew G. Clark

Publications and Research

Although host–parasitoid interactions are becoming well characterized at the organismal and cellular levels, much remains to be understood of the molecular bases for the host immune response and the parasitoids’ ability to defeat this immune response. Leptopilina boulardi and L. heterotoma, two closely related, highly infectious natural parasitoids of Drosophila melanogaster, appear to use very different infection strategies at the cellular level. Here, we further characterize cellular level differences in the infection characteristics of these two wasp species using newly derived, virulent inbred strains, and then use whole genome microarrays to compare the transcriptional response of Drosophila to each. While …

INTERVIEWEE: Mrs. Willie E.P. Bowman (Interview One)

SUMMARY BY: Andrew O’Connell

Born on November 30, 1931 in Montgomery, Alabama, Mrs. Willie Ella Paschal Bowman spent just the first two years of her life in what she proudly described as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1933, she and her mother headed north to stay with Bowman’s great aunt in Harlem, part of the first wave of the Great Migration that would soon develop as one of the most significant movements of peoples that this country has ever seen. After earning three dollars a week as …

Accounting For Additional Heterogeneity: A Theoretic Extension Of An Extant Economic Model, Bradley John Barney Oct 2007

Accounting For Additional Heterogeneity: A Theoretic Extension Of An Extant Economic Model, Bradley John Barney

Theses and Dissertations

The assumption in economics of a representative agent is often made. However, it is a very rigid assumption. Hall and Jones (2004b) presented an economic model that essentially provided for a representative agent for each age group in determining the group's health level function. Our work seeks to extend their theoretical version of the model by allowing for two representative agents for each age—one for each of “Healthy” and “Sick” risk-factor groups—to allow for additional heterogeneity in the populace. The approach to include even more risk-factor groups is also briefly discussed. While our “extended” theoretical model is not applied directly …

Reading Fluency Through Alternative Text: Rereading With An Interactive Sing-To-Read Program Embedded Within A Middle School Music Classroom, Marie Biggs Oct 2007

Reading Fluency Through Alternative Text: Rereading With An Interactive Sing-To-Read Program Embedded Within A Middle School Music Classroom, Marie Biggs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Singing exaggerates the language of reading. The students find their voices in the rhythm and bounce of language by using music as an alternative text. A concurrent mixed methods study was conducted to investigate the use of an interactive sing-to-read program Tune Into Reading (Electronic Learning Products, 2006) as an alternative text, embedded within a heterogeneous music classroom. Measured by the Qualitative Reading Inventory-4 (QRI-4) (Leslie & Caldwell, 2006), the fluency, word recognition, comprehension, and instructional reading level of the treatment students were compared to their counterparts who sang as part of the regular music program. Concurrently, this investigation also …

Properties Of L = 1 B1 And B2* Mesons, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

This Letter presents the first strong evidence for the resolution of the excited B mesons B1 and B2* as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B+(*). The mass of B1 is measured to be 5720.6 ± 2.4 ± 1.4 MeV=c 2 and the mass difference ΔM between B2* and B1 is 26.2 ± 3.1 ± 0.9 MeV/c 2, giving the mass of the B2* as 5746.8 ± 2.4 ± 1.7 MeV/c 2. The production rate for B1 and B2 …

Ultra Reliable Computing Systems, Chong Ho Lee Oct 2007

Ultra Reliable Computing Systems, Chong Ho Lee

Dissertations and Theses

For high security and safety applications as well as general purpose applications, it is necessary to have ultra reliable computing systems. This dissertation describes our system of self-testable and self-repairable digital devices, especially, EPLDs (Electrically Programmable Logic Devices). In addition to significantly improving the reliability of digital systems, our self-healing and re-configurable system design with added repair capability can also provide higher yields, lower testing costs, and faster time-to-market for the semiconductor industry.

The digital system in our approach is composed of blocks, which realize combinational and sequential circuits using GALs (Generic Array Logic Devices). We describe three techniques for …
