Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass In The Dilepton Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration Oct 2007

Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass In The Dilepton Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We present a measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel based on approximately 370 pb-1 of data collected by the DØ experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We employ two different methods to extract the top quark mass. We show that both methods yield consistent results using ensemble tests of events generated with the DØ Monte Carlo simulation. We combine the results from the two methods to obtain a top quark mass mt = 178.1 ± 8.2 GeV. The statistical uncertainty is 6.7 GeV and the systematic uncertainty is 4.8 GeV.

Data Center Migration, Shane Wiswell Oct 2007

Data Center Migration, Shane Wiswell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A successful datacenter migration plan will contribute to a company's productivity by minimizing the downtime of the business critical systems. After the design and construction of the new computer data center, a detailed project plan will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the data center migration in relation to the impact on the company's client base.

Structure Of Arabidopsis Thaliana 5-Methylthioribose Kinase Reveals A More Occluded Active Site Than Its Bacterial Homolog, Shao Yang-Ku, Kenneth A. Cornell, P. Lynne Howell Oct 2007

Structure Of Arabidopsis Thaliana 5-Methylthioribose Kinase Reveals A More Occluded Active Site Than Its Bacterial Homolog, Shao Yang-Ku, Kenneth A. Cornell, P. Lynne Howell

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Metabolic variations exist between the methionine salvage pathway of humans and a number of plants and microbial pathogens. 5-Methylthioribose (MTR) kinase is a key enzyme required for methionine salvage in plants and many bacteria. The absence of a mammalian homolog suggests that MTR kinase is a good target for the design of specific herbicides or antibiotics.

Results: The structure of Arabidopsis thaliana MTR kinase co-crystallized with ATPγS and MTR has been determined at 1.9 Å resolution. The structure is similar to B. subtilis MTR kinase and has the same protein kinase fold observed in other evolutionarily related …

Faculty Publications

We search for direct pair production of supersymmetric top quarks and supersymmetric bottom quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96TeV, using 295pb-1 of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) experiment. The supersymmetric top (supersymmetric bottom) quarks are selected by reconstructing their decay into a charm (bottom) quark and a neutralino, which is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. The signature of such processes is two energetic heavy-flavor jets and missing transverse energy. The number of events that pass our selection for each search process is consistent with the expected standard model background. By comparing our results …

Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky Oct 2007

Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present a critical examination of phonological effects in a picture-word interference task. Using a methodology minimizing stimulus repetition, English/Spanish and Spanish/English bilinguals named pictures in either L1 or L2 (blocked contexts) or in both (mixed contexts) while ignoring word distractors in L1 or L2. Distractors were either phonologically related to the picture name (direct; FISH–fist), or related through translation to the picture name (TT; LEG–milk–leche), or they were unrelated (bear–peach). Results demonstrate robust activation of phonological representations by translation equivalents of word distractors. Although both direct and TT distractors facilitated naming, TT facilitation was more consistent in L2 naming …

Deafness Mutation Mining Using Regular Expression Based Pattern Matching, Christopher M. Frenz Oct 2007

Deafness Mutation Mining Using Regular Expression Based Pattern Matching, Christopher M. Frenz

Publications and Research

Background: While keyword based queries of databases such as Pubmed are frequently of great utility, the ability to use regular expressions in place of a keyword can often improve the results output by such databases. Regular expressions can allow for the identification of element types that cannot be readily specified by a single keyword and can allow for different words with similar character sequences to be distinguished.

Results: A Perl based utility was developed to allow the use of regular expressions in Pubmed searches, thereby improving the accuracy of the searches.

Conclusion: This utility was then utilized to create a …
