Bootstrap Confidence Regions For Optimal Operating Conditions In Response Surface Methodology, Roger D. Gibb, I-Li Lu, Walter H. Carter Jr

COBRA Preprint Series

This article concerns the application of bootstrap methodology to construct a likelihood-based confidence region for operating conditions associated with the maximum of a response surface constrained to a specified region. Unlike classical methods based on the stationary point, proper interpretation of this confidence region does not depend on unknown model parameters. In addition, the methodology does not require the assumption of normally distributed errors. The approach is demonstrated for concave-down and saddle system cases in two dimensions. Simulation studies were performed to assess the coverage probability of these regions.

Carey V. Musladin: A Commentary On What Is Not Prejudicial, Christopher Donadio Nov 2007

Carey V. Musladin: A Commentary On What Is Not Prejudicial, Christopher Donadio

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In a 9-0 decision, the United States Supreme Court refused to find that a California state court had acted "contrary to, or involved an unreasonable application of, clearly established Federal law," when that court found that it was not prejudicial for trial audience members to wear buttons with the image of the defendant's alleged murder victim. The Court relied upon the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 ("AEDPA"), and its previous rulings in Estelle v. Williams and Holbrook v. Flynn, earlier cases that defined certain actions as prejudicial to a defendant in a court of law. The Court …

Philip Morris Usa V. Williams: A Confusing Distinction, Sachin Bansal

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In Philip Morris USA v. Williams, the United States Supreme Court held 5-4 that it is unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause of the Constitution for a jury to award punitive damages for harm caused to individuals other than the plaintiff. Thus, the Court concluded that, under the Constitution, a trial court could not levy punitive damages out of a desire to punish a company for injuries it inflicts upon others who are "essentially, strangers to the litigation." However, the Court confusingly drew a narrow and arguably contradictory distinction to justify its holding. Under Philip Morris USA, a jury may …

Cunningham V. California, Christopher P. Raab

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In Cunningham v. California, the United States Supreme Court voted 6-3 to invalidate California's determinate sentencing law ("DSL") as violative of the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments. The Court held that, notwithstanding the California Supreme Court's determination to the contrary, the DSL conflicted with prior Supreme Court precedent "by placing sentence-elevating factfinding within the judge's province," thereby "violat[ing] a defendant's right to trial by jury safeguarded by the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments."

Safeco Ins. Co. Of America V. Burr: Defining Notification Requirements And Willfulness Under The Fair Credit Reporting Act, Travis S. Souza

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In a recent decision, the United States Supreme Court resolved a critical dispute regarding the interpretation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act ("FCRA") and its notice requirement. In Safeco Ins. Co. of America v. Burr, the Court settled the definition of "willful" violation, a determination that will have enormous effects for insurance companies. Specifically, the Court held that willfulness not only includes knowing violations, but also includes a violation committed in reckless disregard of statutory obligations. While both of the insurance companies in Burr were technically victorious -- both were held not to have willfully violated the FCRA -- the …

Effects Of Nutrients From The Water Column On The Growth Of Benthic Microalgae In Permeable Sediments, Brian P. Darrow Nov 2007

Effects Of Nutrients From The Water Column On The Growth Of Benthic Microalgae In Permeable Sediments, Brian P. Darrow

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In some continental shelf sediments integrated benthic microalgal biomass is greater than the integrated phytoplankton biomass in the overlying water column. In addition, benthic microalgae may account for up to 10% of the primary production responsible for the coastal fishery yield of the eastern United States.

A three-dimensional model of the eastern Gulf of Mexico examines the effects of water-column nutrient sources on the growth of benthic microalgae. To parameterize the exchange of nutrients across the sediment/water interface in these permeable sediments, a non-local exchange submodel was constructed and tested within the framework of the model's grid.

Based on the …

Prefrontal Cortex Asymmetry And The Regulation Of Communication: A Meta-Analytic Study, Michelle Elaine Pence Nov 2007

Prefrontal Cortex Asymmetry And The Regulation Of Communication: A Meta-Analytic Study, Michelle Elaine Pence

Theses

A rapidly growing body of research indicates that individual differences in the ability to regulate emotions depends on symmetric functioning in the prefrontal cortex. When prefrontal functioning is asymmetrical- especially when the right side is more active than the left- a lack of emotional control is more likely. This lack of emotional regulation has consequences for affective social interaction and, therefore, communication. Although a great deal of theoretical speculation abounds regarding the research literature, conclusions have been based on narrative literature reviews. In the present study, a psychometric meta-analysis of studies that examined the relationship between prefrontal asymmetry and variables …

Encouraging Corporate Innovation For Our Homeland During The Best Of Times For The Worst Of Times: Extending Safety Act Protections To Natural Disasters’, Ava A. Harter

Duke Law & Technology Review

This article first analyzes the innovative tort reform of the SAFETY Act and then argues for expansion of SAFETY Act type risk protection to natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires. The SAFETY Act was drafted to stimulate the development and deployment of technologies that combat terrorism by providing liability protection. Applying the same type of legislation to natural disasters will provide a commensurate benefit of encouraging preparedness and development of technologies that could mitigate harms resulting from natural disasters. The Department of Homeland Security voiced a desire to increase the use of the SAFETY Act by private industry. …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: Environmental factors may influence the particularly low rates of physical activity in African American and low-income adults. This cross-sectional study investigated how measured environmental factors were related to self-reported walking and vigorous physical activity for residents of low-income public housing developments.

Methods: Physical activity data from 452 adult residents residing in 12 low-income housing developments were combined with measured environmental data that examined the neighborhood (800 m radius buffer) around each housing development. Aggregated ecological and multilevel regression models were used for analysis.

Results: Participants were predominately female (72.8%), African American (79.6%) and had a high school education or …

Loss-Based Estimation With Evolutionary Algorithms And Cross-Validation, David Shilane, Richard H. Liang, Sandrine Dudoit Nov 2007

Loss-Based Estimation With Evolutionary Algorithms And Cross-Validation, David Shilane, Richard H. Liang, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Many statistical inference methods rely upon selection procedures to estimate a parameter of the joint distribution of explanatory and outcome data, such as the regression function. Within the general framework for loss-based estimation of Dudoit and van der Laan, this project proposes an evolutionary algorithm (EA) as a procedure for risk optimization. We also analyze the size of the parameter space for polynomial regression under an interaction constraints along with constraints on either the polynomial or variable degree.

Camp: A Common Api For Measuring Performance, Mark Gabel, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Accurate performance testing of heterogeneous distributed systems, such as those created using GRID technology, requires a consistent method for retrieving system performance data from multiple platforms. This paper presents CAMP: a low-level platform independent performance data API designed for use with distributed testing frameworks.

CAMP is not necessarily tied to the distributed testing task: it provides a simple, low-level interface into operating system performance data that can be used to build complex performance measurement applications. This paper discusses CAMP's functionality and implementation in detail. It also contains a detailed analysis of the API's correctness, performance, and overhead.

We report the detection of five Jovian-mass planets orbiting high-metallicity stars. Four of these stars were first observed as part of the N2K program, and exhibited low rms velocity scatter after three consecutive observations. However, follow-up observations over the last 3 years now reveal the presence of longer period planets with orbital periods ranging from 21 days to a few years. HD 11506 is a G0 V star with a planet of M sin i = 4.74 MJup in a 3.85 yr orbit. HD 17156 is a G0 V star with a 3.12 MJup planet in a 21.2 day orbit. …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have used high-precision differential astrometry from the Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems (PHASES) project and radial velocity measurements covering a time span of 20 years to determine the orbital parameters of the 88 Tau A system. 88 Tau is a complex hierarchical multiple system comprising a total of six stars; we have studied the brightest four, consisting of two short-period pairs orbiting each other with an ~18 yr period. We present the first orbital solution for one of the short-period pairs, and determine the masses of the components and distance to the system to the level of …

We present several cases of optical observations during γ-ray bursts (GRBs) which resulted in prompt limits but no detection of optical emission, These limits constrain the prompt optical flux densities and the optical brightness relative to the 7-ray emission. The derived constraints fall within the range of properties observed in GRBs with prompt optical detections, although at the faint end of optical/7-ray flux ratios. The currently accessible prompt optical limits do not require a different set of intrinsic or environmental GRB properties, relative to the events with prompt optical detections. © 2007. Spectacular Shells In The Host Galaxy Of The Qso Mc2 1635+119, Gabriela Canalizo, Nicola Bennert, Bruno Jungwiert, Alan Stockton, François Schweizer, Mark Lacy, Chien Peng

Physics

We present deep HST ACS images and Keck spectroscopy of MC2 1635+119, a QSO hosted by a galaxy previously classified as an undisturbed elliptical galaxy. Our new images reveal dramatic shell structure indicative of a merger event in the relatively recent past. The brightest shells in the central regions of the host are distributed alternately in radius, with at least two distinct shells on one side of the nucleus and three on the other, out to a distance of ~13 kpc. The light within the five shells comprises ~6% of the total galaxy light. Lower surface brightness ripples or tails …

Correlation Of The Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays With Nearby Extragalactic Objects, J. Abraham, Gregory Snow, Pierre Auger Collaboration Nov 2007

Correlation Of The Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays With Nearby Extragalactic Objects, J. Abraham, Gregory Snow, Pierre Auger Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during the past 3.7 years, we demonstrated a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energy above 6 × 1019 electron volts and the positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) lying within ~75 megaparsecs. We rejected the hypothesis of an isotropic distribution of these cosmic rays with at least a 99% confidence level from a prescribed a priori test. The correlation we observed is compatible with the hypothesis that the highest-energy particles originate from nearby extragalactic sources whose flux has not been substantially reduced by interaction with the cosmic …
