Estimation Of Dose-Response Functions For Longitudinal Data, Erica E M Moodie, David A. Stephens Nov 2007

Estimation Of Dose-Response Functions For Longitudinal Data, Erica E M Moodie, David A. Stephens

COBRA Preprint Series

In a longitudinal study of dose-response, the presence of confounding or non-compliance compromises the estimation of the true effect of a treatment. Standard regression methods cannot remove the bias introduced by patient-selected treatment level, that is, they do not permit the estimation of the causal effect of dose. Using an approach based on the Generalized Propensity Score (GPS), a generalization of the classical, binary treatment propensity score, it is possible to construct a balancing score that provides a more meaningful estimation procedure for the true (unconfounded) effect of dose. Previously, the GPS has been applied only in a single interval …

Ultrasonic Seaming Of Pet, Pet/Cotton Blend, And Spectra Fabrics, Renuka Kadiri Reddy Nov 2007

Ultrasonic Seaming Of Pet, Pet/Cotton Blend, And Spectra Fabrics, Renuka Kadiri Reddy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Ultrasonic seaming offers many advantages as an alternative for joining fabrics, such as efficiency, reduced cost, conservation of energy, and recyclability of the product.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ultrasonic weld parameters – weld pressure, weld time, amplitude of vibration, seam design, and material properties – on seam efficiency and stiffness of a seam. This study also compares seam efficiency and stiffness of (a) ultrasonic seam to that of sewn seam and (b) ultrasonic seam from continuous mode of operation to that of plunge mode. Regression and analytical tests were used to analyze the …

"Under The Bloody Hatchet Of The Haitians": Thomas Jeffersonís Foreign Policy Concerning The Haitian Revolution, 1791-1806, Joseph A. Boyd Nov 2007

"Under The Bloody Hatchet Of The Haitians": Thomas Jeffersonís Foreign Policy Concerning The Haitian Revolution, 1791-1806, Joseph A. Boyd

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

At first glance Thomas Jefferson's presidential actions concerning the Haitian Revolution seem to denote racially motivated decisions predicated upon fear. However, through a deeper analysis of primary documents, Jefferson's position appears more economically and politically ambitious. By 1791, the French colony of Saint Domingue held the title of the richest colony in the Caribbean and the world's leading producer of sugar. In addition, Saint Domingue consumed about sixteen percent of all of America's exports. Jefferson's personal opinions concerning revolution and trade on the island of Saint Domingue contradict the statements of his administration. Partisan politics manifested a stern voice within …

Shear Modulus Degradation Of Liquefying Sand: Quantification And Modeling, Peter A. Olsen Nov 2007

Shear Modulus Degradation Of Liquefying Sand: Quantification And Modeling, Peter A. Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

A major concern for geotechnical engineers is the ability to predict how a soil will react to large ground motions produced by earthquakes. Of all the different types of soil, liquefiable soils present some of the greatest challenges. The ability to quantify the degradation of a soil's shear modulus as it undergoes liquefaction would help engineers design more reliably and economically. This thesis uses ground motions recorded by an array of downhole accelerometers on Port Island, Japan, during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, to quantify the shear modulus of sand as it liquefies. It has been shown that the shear modulus …

The Quiet Revolution In U.S. Antitrust Law, George Hay Nov 2007

The Quiet Revolution In U.S. Antitrust Law, George Hay

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In this paper, I report on a series of recent decisions in antitrust cases by the U.S. Supreme Court. While each decision, read separately, may be only of moderate interest (even to a U.S. audience), the slate of decisions, looked at in its entirety, conveys a significant message, and one that may have meaning for scholars and practitioners in Australia and other jurisdictions outside the U.S. I would suggest that a quiet revolution is occurring in which the arguments economists have been making for nearly fifty years have suddenly been embraced by both the left and the right on the …

Arieh Israel Insurance Company Ltd V. Kaplansky, Edna Arbel, Miriam Naor, Mishael Cheshin

Translated Opinions

Facts: The respondent, a lawyer, represented a company (hereinafter ‘the company’) that filed a claim against the appellant insurance company for fire loss. Before it received the insurance payout, the company asked the respondent to sign a document stating that he no longer represented them. Jones V. Bock: New Clarity Under The Prison Litigation Reform Act, Squire Servance Nov 2007

Jones V. Bock: New Clarity Under The Prison Litigation Reform Act, Squire Servance

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

On January 22, 2007, the Supreme Court decided the consolidated cases of Jones v. Bock , Williams v. Overton , and Walton v. Bouchard , all of which were Sixth Circuit cases. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court provided clarity to what constitutes exhaustion of prison grievance procedures under the Prison Litigation Reform Act of 1995 (PLRA). The Court's decision also offers its view on the correct way to balance the burden between prisoner plaintiffs and the judiciary, which labors to process prisoner complaints. Broken into three discreet issues, the essential holding provides a small victory for prison litigants. …

Whorton V. Bockting And The Watershed Exception Of Teague V. Lane, Tadhg Dooley Nov 2007

Whorton V. Bockting And The Watershed Exception Of Teague V. Lane, Tadhg Dooley

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In Whorton v. Bockting, the Supreme Court considered whether its rule from Crawford v. Washington, prohibiting the admission of testimonial hearsay statements without a prior opportunity for the defendant to cross-examine the declarant, should be applied retroactively to cases on collateral appeal under the standard set forth in Teague v. Lane. The determination rested on whether Crawford announced a "new rule" that should be applied retroactively by virtue of its being a "watershed rule of criminal procedure implicating the fundamental fairness and accuracy of the criminal proceeding." In a unanimous decision, the Court held that Crawford did announce a "new …
