Modeling Of Culicidae Population Capacity Using Remote Sensing, Gis, And Fractal Geometry, Daniel Patrick Johnson May 2007

Modeling Of Culicidae Population Capacity Using Remote Sensing, Gis, And Fractal Geometry, Daniel Patrick Johnson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A remote sensing and fractal geometric approach is proposed for the surveillance of mosquito population. The spread of vector-borne pathogens is becoming increasingly important with recent discussions of extensive human urbanization and global climate change. To date most studies dealing with mosquito transmitted disease surveyed by remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems have been conducted in tropical homogenous locales. This study approached the issue in a rapidly suburbanizing county in the Midwestern portion of the United States. Adult mosquitoes were trapped over a several year period and the landscape of the surrounding patches analyzed via remote sensing, fractal geometry, and …

Modeling Environmental Justice: A Comparative Analysis Of Multiple Environmental Metrics, Trevor K. Fuller May 2007

Modeling Environmental Justice: A Comparative Analysis Of Multiple Environmental Metrics, Trevor K. Fuller

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Environmental justice, the study of interactions between environmental disamenities and socioeconomic conditions, has been a focus of policy debates and research since the late 1970s. To date, environmental justice research has relied heavily on a few selected metrics, including, but not limited to, Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDF), and Super.fund site Jocations. In this study, I will examine the efficacy of these environmental quality datasets, as well as that oflocal blood-lead level data (in children), to predict observed socioeconomic conditions and compare these results to an emerging metric, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Based on …

Music Piracy Or A Permanent Passive Revolution, Kevin D. Neely May 2007

Music Piracy Or A Permanent Passive Revolution, Kevin D. Neely

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

The goal of this thesis is to examine a classic interpretation of Antonio Gramsci's notion of hegemony in the modern era and the emergence of counter-hegemonic forces through technology. The individualization of modern computers and related products, combined with the extreme popularity of file-swapping and social-networking websites (i.e. Napster, KaZaA, MySpace and the brand new YouTube) has completely altered the way the music industry conducts its business and has erased its hegemony over the creation, distribution and profit made from the sale of music. What makes this relationship between an industry and technology specifically different and worthy of our interest …

What To Make Of Race? : A Content Analysis Of The Use Of Race In Health Research., Oliver Eugene Rollins Jr. May 2007

What To Make Of Race? : A Content Analysis Of The Use Of Race In Health Research., Oliver Eugene Rollins Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using content analysis, this study examines the use of race in health related journal articles from 2000 to 2005. Each of the articles pertained to African Americans and either access to health or quality of health. Selected articles for review were examined in order to gain an understanding as to how race was measured and if race was conceptualized, the explanation for racial disparities, and the intersection of race and class in health.

The Concept Of Peace : Tracing Its Development Through Three Historical Periods In The West Using Artistic And Literacy Evidence., Allan Berry Mcguffey 1952-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to suggest that peace is an idea that changes throughout the history of the west, rather than to show how nations may achieve peace or to define what it is. It begins as a concept the power brokers refer to or represent in their own terms. In Rome the concept of peace expressed the emperor's ability to end civil war. In Siena, the concept substantiated the Nine's claim that communal prosperity and absence of regional wars had happened during their rule. By the Westphalia period the power brokers began to realize the populace was …

Genetic Similarities Within And Between Human Populations, D. J. Witherspoon, S. Wooding, A. R. Rogers, E. E. Marchani, W. S. Watkins, M. A. Batzer, L. B. Jorde May 2007

Genetic Similarities Within And Between Human Populations, D. J. Witherspoon, S. Wooding, A. R. Rogers, E. E. Marchani, W. S. Watkins, M. A. Batzer, L. B. Jorde

Faculty Publications

The proportion of human genetic variation due to differences between populations is modest, and individuals from different populations can be genetically more similar than individuals from the same population. Yet sufficient genetic data can permit accurate classification of individuals into populations. Both findings can be obtained from the same data set, using the same number of polymorphic loci. This article explains why. Our analysis focuses on the frequency, ω, with which a pair of random individuals from two different populations is genetically more similar than a pair of individuals randomly selected from any single population. We compare ω to the …

Ink Impressions: Public Perceptions Of Tattoos And Criminality, Ashlee N. Cook May 2007

Ink Impressions: Public Perceptions Of Tattoos And Criminality, Ashlee N. Cook

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In an ever evolving society, the definition and acceptance of deviant behavior has broadened significantly. The taboos that were once cast out by society have begun to be accepted in society. Participation in tattooing is a prime example of behavior that has become more mainstream. This once detestable art form, which ranges from branding techniques of criminals to tattooing as fashion, has been commodified and accepted by certain groups in our society. However, the adoption of this practice by no means indicates that it is uniformly viewed as acceptable. Research has been conducted on this phenomenon; however, limited studies have …

Class Indifference - A Divided Nation : Finding Common Ground Through American Pragmatism And Democratic Principles In The Composition Classroom, Stacey L. Morrison May 2007

Class Indifference - A Divided Nation : Finding Common Ground Through American Pragmatism And Democratic Principles In The Composition Classroom, Stacey L. Morrison

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Social class plays a significant but often silent part in American politics, lives, and education. As the events of Hurricane Katrina clearly illustrate, the poor and working class often suffer discrimination that leaves them completely powerless. Their position in life shapes not only how they are seen and treated, but also how they see their world. Their cultures differ markedly from middle and upper class cultures, further alienating them from possible greater personal achievement in a system that champions middle-class values. Education, being a microcosm of our society, mirrors our class conflicts, often failing to teach working-class students in an …

An Analysis Of Print Media Coverage Of The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict During The Second Israeli Invasion Of Lebanon In 2006, Majdouline Aziz

All Theses

Through content analysis, the thesis examines how print media frame the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that assists in the expression of a pro-Israeli bias. More specifically it investigates the New York Times and the Associated Press coverage of the Palestinian and Israeli deaths reported during the second Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2006 (July 12, 2006-September 8, 2006). The study found that both news sources expressed their pro-Israeli bias through legitimatizing and de-legitimizing Israeli and Palestinian killings. The New York Times generally justified Israeli killers and killings, condemned Palestinian killers and killings, and assigned more prominence to the Israeli side of the …

Mind, Metaphor, Law, Mark L. Johnson May 2007

Mind, Metaphor, Law, Mark L. Johnson

Mercer Law Review

Change, as John Dewey observed, is a basic fact of human experience. We are temporal creatures, and the situations we find ourselves in, the situations that make up the fabric of our lives, are always evolving and developing. The omnipresence of change throughout all human experience thus creates a fundamental problem for law, namely, how can law preserve its integrity over time, while managing to address the newly emerging circumstances that continually arise throughout our history? If, following one extreme, we think of law as fixed, static, and univocal in its content, then law runs the risk of losing its …

The Missing Link: Archaeological Resource Protection In Charleston, South Carolina, Kathryne Joseph May 2007

The Missing Link: Archaeological Resource Protection In Charleston, South Carolina, Kathryne Joseph

All Theses

Charleston, South Carolina is one of the nation's leading cities in preservation of its built environment - meaning historically and architecturally significant dwellings, sites, and structures. Protection of the city's underground resources, however, falls considerably behind as there is no archaeological preservation ordinance in place, nor is there an archaeological commission or city archaeologist to oversee and administer development projects potentially affecting significant historic and archaeological remains. The purpose of this study is to address the need for archaeological resource protection for the city by providing a better understanding of the importance of urban archaeology and by examining and identifying …
