The "Dead House" At The Former Charleston Navy Base And Shipyard, Christopher Ohm May 2007

The "Dead House" At The Former Charleston Navy Base And Shipyard, Christopher Ohm

All Theses

Over the years a small brick building on the former Charleston Navy Base and Shipyard has been studied, yet still leaves many with unanswered questions. Much speculation has been made about its builder, and date of construction, but with little success. Many researchers cannot agree on the original use of this building, usually referred to as the 'Dead House.' Historical research pointed to many answers, but often led to almost insurmountable questions. This author's recent research has found several missing sites eliminating much confusion. Further research has led to explanations for many of the enigmatic aspects of this building. Architectural, …

All Theses

like all americans, the native peoples were swept into the crucible that was the civil war. although under no obligation to participate in that conflagration, many indian tribes joined one side, some even both factions. the catawba peoples of south carolina were among these, fully committing to the confederacy. that seemingly contradictory response in the light of their treatment by south carolina is the subject of this thesis.

There’S No Place Like Home : The Changing Definition Of Exile In Salman Rushdie’S Midnight’S Children And Shame, Patricia J. Soliman May 2007

There’S No Place Like Home : The Changing Definition Of Exile In Salman Rushdie’S Midnight’S Children And Shame, Patricia J. Soliman

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The concept for this thesis was bom out of my interest in identity construction and contemporary viewpoints on migrancy and exile. I first discovered Salman Rushdie's fiction upon reading the novel Shame, and was immediately struck by his intention, not only to discuss the issues surrounding migrancy, but also to make the reader feel a sense of migrant alienation through his narrative technique. I began to explore the unique ways in which Rushdie uses language, characters and plot to redefine exile as a liberating and positive experience, rather than simply a devastating loss.

However, during my research, I also began …

Toward A Common Currency: Using Item Response Theory To Adjust For Grading Inconsistency, Daniel W. Allen May 2007

Toward A Common Currency: Using Item Response Theory To Adjust For Grading Inconsistency, Daniel W. Allen

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

Grading inconsistency results from the application of different standards such that grades provide an inaccurate, and sometimes misleading, evaluation of student performance. Many attempts to correct for grading inconsistency have either not accurately corrected for inconsistency or have been too complicated to constitute politically feasible solutions to the problem. Within this context, Item Response Theory (IRT) is offered as a solution to grading inconsistency. IRT corrects for inconsistencies in the distributions yielded by the various grading practices of professors and departments as well as the failure of current practices to accurately account for differing student quality by course.

Structural Adjustment Programs And The Delivery Of Health Care In The Third World, Bianca Brunelli May 2007

Structural Adjustment Programs And The Delivery Of Health Care In The Third World, Bianca Brunelli

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

World Bank and International Monetary Fund became involved in the 1982 Third World debt crisis in order to solve global economic difficulties. While these institutions were not created for this purpose, after a series of economic shocks in the 1970s, they swept in order to alleviate the economic difficulties Third World countries faced. By following a strict regime of neoliberal inspired policies, they attempted to alleviate the debt crunch. Despite intentions, the World Bank’s and IMF’s involvement has exacerbated poverty in the Third World. As demonstrated, key factors in structural adjustment programs have impeded health care delivery and have contributed …

Why Sex Education, Elizabeth Marie Davis

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Both sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned/unwanted pregnancy are very serious problems faced by our society today. The United States ranks highest in teen pregnancy over other developed country. In order to combat these very serious societal problems it is important to educate our adolescents. All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Cache Valley Shoshone are the survivors of the Bear River Massacre, where a battle between a group of US. volunteer troops from California and a Shoshone village degenerated into the worst Indian massacre in US. history, resulting in the deaths of over 200 Shoshones. The massacre occurred due to increasing tensions over land use between the Shoshones and the Mormon settlers. Following the massacre, the Shoshones attempted settling in several different locations in Box Elder County, eventually finding a home in Washakie, Utah. However, the LDS Church sold the land where the city of Washakie sat, forcing the Shoshones …

The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline May 2007

The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In much of the research conducted on military issues, problems are identified years, sometimes decades, before the military publicly acknowledges these concerns; an example of this is sexual assault, which scholars discussed for over thirty years before the military acknowledged the issue. In this paper, I study the value differences between the military leadership and the scholars who study military topics and how these different values may hinder effective communication between the two groups. The method I use in identifying the standards by which the two groups identify problems is content analysis on articles published by the two communities, calculating …
