Searching For Community Online: How Virtual Spaces Affect Student Notions Of Community, Emma S. Spiro May 2007

Searching For Community Online: How Virtual Spaces Affect Student Notions Of Community, Emma S. Spiro

Pomona Senior Theses

Social networking sites and virtual spaces have flourished in the past few years. The author explores the impact of such social networking services on the local community at a small liberal arts college. The author investigates modern trends in community theory. Defining community has become more difficult in modern society, where community is no longer easily distinguished by geographical boundaries. From the background of modern community theory the author explores the designation of virtual spaces as “virtual communities.” Literature and research about virtual spaces indicates that they can provide many of the values thought be to inherent to community membership. …

Good Fences And Good Neighbors? Biblical Scholars And Theologians, Jean-Pierre Ruiz May 2007

Good Fences And Good Neighbors? Biblical Scholars And Theologians, Jean-Pierre Ruiz

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author takes occasion of the decision by the American Academic of Religion to separate its annual meetings from those of the Society for Biblical Literature, to reflect on the challenging disciplinary frontier arrayed between systematic theology and biblical studies. In particular, he calls for critical theological interpretation of the claims of biblical scholarship, bearing in mind the contextuality of all discourses. For their part, biblical scholars should call systematic theologians to operate within the framework of what Fernando Segovia has called a hermeneutics of otherness and engagement, as a preface to reading with exegetes and other academic, pastoral, professional …

The Potential Benefits Of Taking Introduction To Art For Non-Art Major College Students, Chia-Ying Hsieh May 2007

The Potential Benefits Of Taking Introduction To Art For Non-Art Major College Students, Chia-Ying Hsieh

Theses & Dissertations

This research was conducted to discern the potential benefits for non-art majors taking a general art course based on the perspectives of both discipline-based art education (DBAE) and visual culture and art education (VCAE). The research also attempted to ascertain the impact of DBAE and VCAE on the students. DBAE considers art an indispensable part of general education and supports a broad educational mission that promotes building minds and cultivating problem solving, VCAE stresses “meaning making” and active learning. This study demonstrated how the goals or objectives of art education promoted by both DBAE and VCAE are beneficial and crucial …

Noun-Sense: Short-Term Memory And Correct Recall Of Concrete, Abstract And Nonsense Words, Mindi E. Lovelady May 2007

Noun-Sense: Short-Term Memory And Correct Recall Of Concrete, Abstract And Nonsense Words, Mindi E. Lovelady

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Retrieval of items from short-term memory is a repeat phenomenon in an individual’s everyday life. Recall of some information from short-term memory is more readily available than others, but learning to maximize the amount of information that is retrieved is possible. Using retrieval techniques that involve word concreteness could be of utility in retrieval of information. 81 undergraduate participants were recruited at Lindenwood University. Each participant was asked to complete a task involving the STM recall of words from a list. The list incorporated concrete and abstract nouns, with nonsense words. Participants demonstrated, with significance, the ability to recall more …

Nietzsche’S Doctrine Of Eternal Return, David R. Gadon May 2007

Nietzsche’S Doctrine Of Eternal Return, David R. Gadon

Senior Honors Projects

In Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Friedrich Nietzsche challenges the reader to imagine that every moment of his or her life, every joy and every sorrow, every smile and every tear, will be repeated in exactly the same way from beginning to end. He asks us to envision these things recurring, not one more time, but for all infinity into the past and future alike. Amongst the many revolutionary and profound concepts put forward by the witty and vitriolic Nietzsche, there is none as inscrutable and seemingly inapproachable as this doctrine of eternal return of the same. In just three of his …

What Replaced The Kolkhozes And Sovkhozes? A Political Ecology Of Agricultural Change In Post-Soviet Russia, Elizabeth C. Engebretson May 2007

What Replaced The Kolkhozes And Sovkhozes? A Political Ecology Of Agricultural Change In Post-Soviet Russia, Elizabeth C. Engebretson

German and Russian Studies Honors Projects

Russian agriculture underwent drastic changes after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. A large-scale collective system, with a planned economy, was expected to enter the market economy rapidly with the help of new legislation and programs. Things did not go as the central Russian government and international development organizations had planned. Instead of joining the global capitalist system, rural Russians turned to small private plots and practiced subsistence agriculture for survival. Some people attempted to start private farms but were often not successful because of a lack of capital and structural support. Other enterprises remained variations of collective …

Memory Recall: Cued Or Free, Meghan Thomson, Wendy Stamps May 2007

Memory Recall: Cued Or Free, Meghan Thomson, Wendy Stamps

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Cues may be helpful to aid a person in memory recall. Two experiments were conducted in order to test the hypothesis that recall is enhanced with the presentation of cues. In Experiment 1, the recall performances for the same forty-eight participants were compared under cued and free recall conditions. A paired t-test was performed on the participants who received both cued and free recall questions. In Experiment 2, thirteen participants were given either cued only or free only questions to recall. An independent t-test was performed on the participants who received only cued recall questions or only free recall questions. …

Classical Recall: Analysis Of The “Mozart Effect” On Basic Mental Tasks, Matthew Black, Steven Carter, Adam Rose May 2007

Classical Recall: Analysis Of The “Mozart Effect” On Basic Mental Tasks, Matthew Black, Steven Carter, Adam Rose

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Researchers conducted a study based on the theory of the Mozart Effect to determine how well students at Lindenwood University performed on cognitive tasks when certain variables were manipulated. There were a total of twelve different conditions, in which the order of tasks, music, and hypothesis instructions were varied. It was concluded that no significant difference was found between any of the assigned conditions. Further research needs to be performed to determine if other variables would be better predictors of cognitive achievement, instead of the presence of classical music and priming participants with different hypotheses. If the Mozart Effect is …

Animal Welfare Perspectives On Recreational Angling, Steven J. Cooke, Lynne U. Sneddon May 2007

Animal Welfare Perspectives On Recreational Angling, Steven J. Cooke, Lynne U. Sneddon

Animal Welfare Collection

Fish captured by recreational anglers are often released either voluntarily or because of harvest regulations in a process called ‘‘catch-and-release’’. Catch-and-release angling is thought to be beneficial for the conservation of fish stocks based on the premise that most of the fish that are released survive. However, expanding interest in animal welfare has promoted debate regarding the ethics of catch-and-release angling. There is a growing recognition that fish can consciously experience nociception and that they have some capacity to experience pain and fear. Indeed, empirical anatomical, physiological, and behavioural evidence supports the notion that fish could experience these two forms …

Racial Stereotyping And Physical Perception Of Crime, Jenn Malzone May 2007

Racial Stereotyping And Physical Perception Of Crime, Jenn Malzone

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

A statistical analysis conducted by the United States Department of Justice stated that from 1976 to 2002, a surprisingly large number of murders committed were intra-racial, rather than inter-racial. The results claimed that 86% of Caucasian murder victims were killed by other Caucasians, and 94% of African American victims were killed by other African Americans. The present study was conducted to see if the average person perceives interracial crime to be more of a threat. Thirty-seven participants were given the task of assigning photographs of men from the two most prominent ethnic groups in the United States to various negative …
