Effects Of Guanfacine On Mnemonic Processing Following Lesion To Rat Medial Septum: A Novel Treatment Approach To Alzheimer's Memory Type Deficits, Mark D. Opal '07
Effects Of Guanfacine On Mnemonic Processing Following Lesion To Rat Medial Septum: A Novel Treatment Approach To Alzheimer's Memory Type Deficits, Mark D. Opal '07
Honors Projects
Cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease are known to result from decreases in acetylcholine within the cholinergic system of the medial septal area, which projects to the hippocampus. The significance of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine within this context has not been extensively reviewed. The present study measured the effects that Guanfacine, an alpha-2 noradrenergic agonist, has on memory deficits produced by cholinergic cell lesion in the rat medial septum. Memory processing during pre-lesion, post-lesion, and post-drug administration groups was quantified using a socially transmitted food preference task. Following administration of the cholinergic neurotoxin 192 IgG-saporin, subjects exhibited a significant decrease in …

Assisting Learning And Success In Adhd Children, Katie Burns
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become the center of controversy as Americans diagnosis children with ADHD at an ever increasing rate. Yet it seems at times that little is actually known about the disease beyond the accepted truth that a distinct disorder marked by inattention and hyperactivity does, in fact, exist. This disorder causes numerous problems within the classroom including classroom management and jeopardizing the education of all children in the class. One option to overcome these challenges is to place all ADHD children in a separate classroom, however this only serves to isolate the child and entirely exhaust the teacher. …

Cryptic Speciation In Two Widespread Subterranean Amphipod Genera Reflects Historical Drainage Patterns In An Ancient Landscape, Stefan Eberhard, Stuart A. Halse, William F. Humphreys
KIP Abstracts
The landscape of the Pilbara region of Western Australia has been relatively unchanged for 100 million years. The ancient river systems of this region might be expected to be sources of isolation and divergence for aquatic species. Hence, the occurrence of widespread groundwater taxa in this landscape offers the opportunity to examine associations between genetic diversity and drainage patterns. Pilbarus and Chydaekata are two widespread genera of subterranean amphipods endemic to the Pilbara, each occupying multiple tributaries. We used molecular data to examine the roles of drainage patterns in structuring genetic diversity. Gene flow within a tributary may be facilitated …

An Assessment Of Song Admixture As An Indicator Of Hybridization In Black-Capped Chickadees (Poecile Atricapillus) And Carolina Chickadees (Poecile Carolinensis), Gene D. Sattler, Patricia Sawaya, Michael J. Braun
An Assessment Of Song Admixture As An Indicator Of Hybridization In Black-Capped Chickadees (Poecile Atricapillus) And Carolina Chickadees (Poecile Carolinensis), Gene D. Sattler, Patricia Sawaya, Michael J. Braun
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Vocal admixture often occurs where differentiated populations or species of birds meet. This may entail song sympatry, bilingually singing birds, and songs with intermediate or atypical characteristics. Different levels of vocal admixture at the range interface between Black-capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and Carolina Chickadees (P. carolinensis) have been interpreted as indicating that hybridization is frequent at some locations but not others. However, song ontogeny in these birds has a strong nongenetic component, so that inferences regarding hybridization based on vocal admixture require confirmation. We used diagnostic genetic markers and quantitative analyses of song to characterize population samples along two transects …
The Effects Of Timbering On Plethodon Hubrichti Over 12 Years, Norman Reichenbach, Paul Sattler
The Effects Of Timbering On Plethodon Hubrichti Over 12 Years, Norman Reichenbach, Paul Sattler
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Clearcuts have been shown to adversely affect salamander populations, whereas impacts from milder forms of timbering are more variable. We determined the effects of clearcuts and shelterwood cuts on populations of the Peaks of Otter Salamander (Plethodon hubrichti) using counts of surface active salamanders found during multiple night collections. Sampling was done prior to and then periodically after timbering for 12 yr. Overall, the long-term trends in mean number of P. hubrichti at reference and shelterwood cut sites were not significantly different. In contrast, means at clearcut sites declined 41% during the first year posttimbering and then declined over the …
Providing New Opportunities To Adolescent Girls In Socially Conservative Settings: The Ishraq Program In Rural Upper Egypt—Full Report, Martha Brady, Ragui Assaad, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Abeer Salem, Rania Salem, Nadia Zibani
Providing New Opportunities To Adolescent Girls In Socially Conservative Settings: The Ishraq Program In Rural Upper Egypt—Full Report, Martha Brady, Ragui Assaad, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Abeer Salem, Rania Salem, Nadia Zibani
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Adolescent girls in the poorest villages of Upper Egypt, who were kept from school by poverty and other obstacles, face a bleak future that will replicate the poverty and disadvantage of their own families. This stark picture of vulnerability encouraged four long-standing nongovernmental organizations working in Egypt—Caritas, CEDPA (Centre for Development and Population Activities), the Population Council, and Save the Children—to create a multidimensional program for 13–15-year-old out-of-school girls. The pilot intervention, known locally as Ishraq, sought to transform girls’ lives by changing gender norms and community perceptions about girls’ roles in society while bringing them safely and confidently into …
Foraging Ecology Of Black-Crowned Night-Herons (Nycticorax Nycticorax) In The New York City Area, Andrew James Bernick
Foraging Ecology Of Black-Crowned Night-Herons (Nycticorax Nycticorax) In The New York City Area, Andrew James Bernick
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Over 1,700 pairs of colonial wading birds (i.e., herons, egrets, and ibis) breed and forage in the industrialized ecosystem of metropolitan New York City (NYC). Wading bird colonies are located on 7 islands that lie between western Staten Island and Long Island Sound. The Black-crowned Night-Heron (BCNH), a mainly nocturnal forager, is the numerically dominant breeding heron in these colonies, and has been undergoing population declines both locally and region-wide since the mid-1990s. My objective was to determine how BCNHs forage in NYC's urban estuarine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. From March-September 2002-2004, I conducted weekly night surveys on Staten Island, …
Behavior And Ecology Of The Mona Monkey In The Seasonally Dry Lama Forest, Republic Of Bénin, Reiko Matsuda Goodwin
Behavior And Ecology Of The Mona Monkey In The Seasonally Dry Lama Forest, Republic Of Bénin, Reiko Matsuda Goodwin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
I investigated the behavior and ecology of the mona monkey (Cercopithecus mona Schreber, 1774) in the Lama Forest for 17 months, and estimated the population density and biomass of the anthropoid species in the forest.
I found that Cercopithecus mona forms mixed-sex groups and all-male groups. Multiple males in mixed-sex groups interacted amicably, but males belonging to different groups behaved aggressively towards each other during intergroup encounters. Male-male relationships in C. mona appear to differ from those reported in some other arboreal guenons (e.g., C. diana, C. mitis).
Fruits and legume seeds and arils were the most important …
Special "Effects": Kitzmiller V. Dover Area School District, 400 F. Supp. 2d 707 (M.D. Pa. 2005), And The Fate Of Intelligent Design In Our Public Schools, Philip Sparr
Nebraska Law Review
Despite modern society's attempts at political correctness and increasingly liberal social mores, certain issues continue to divide friends, families, and nations. Religion is one such issue. The conflict over religion's proper place in society is not limited to local coffee shop banter, the purview of social commentators, or dinner conversation in a gated suburban home. The Supreme Court has similarly struggled to define a border in the morass between secular and sectarian. The broad language of the First Amendment lends itself to diverse interpretations and conflicting opinions, stating in part, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, …

Can I Get Paid For That?: The Compensability Of Commuting Time Post-Ibp, Inc. V. Alvarez, 546 U.S. 21 (2005), Christine D. Higgins
Nebraska Law Review
In Alvarez, the Court expanded the compensable workday by holding that any preliminary activity which is "integral and indispensable" to the principal activity commences the compensable workday and is not exempt under the Portal-to-Portal Act. The expansion of the workday leads to the question of whether employers outside the context of Alvarez must begin paying their employees for time spent commuting to and from work when an employee undertakes an "integral and indispensable" preliminary activity outside the workplace, or performs an "integral and indispensable" postliminary activity upon reaching home. In other words, in situations like the above example, Carla's …
