Identification Of Vibrio Isolates By A Multiplex Pcr Assay And Rpob Sequence Determination, Cheryl L. Tarr, Jayna S. Patel, Nancy Puhr, Evangeline Sowers, Cheryl A. Bopp, Nancy A. Strockbine Jan 2007

Identification Of Vibrio Isolates By A Multiplex Pcr Assay And Rpob Sequence Determination, Cheryl L. Tarr, Jayna S. Patel, Nancy Puhr, Evangeline Sowers, Cheryl A. Bopp, Nancy A. Strockbine

United States Public Health Resources

Vibrio, a diverse genus of aquatic bacteria, currently includes 72 species, 12 of which occur in human clinical samples. Of these 12, three species—Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus—account for the majority of Vibrio infections in humans. Rapid and accurate identification of Vibrio species has been problematic because phenotypic characteristics are variable within species and biochemical identification requires 2 or more days to complete. To facilitate the identification of human-pathogenic species, we developed a multiplex PCR that uses species-specific primers to amplify gene regions in four species (V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, V. …

A Scale-Free Systems Theory Of Motivation And Addiction, R. Andrew Chambers, Warren K. Bickel, Marc N. Potenza Jan 2007

A Scale-Free Systems Theory Of Motivation And Addiction, R. Andrew Chambers, Warren K. Bickel, Marc N. Potenza

United States Public Health Resources

Scale-free organizations, characterized by uneven distributions of linkages between nodal elements, describe the structure and function of many life-based complex systems developing under evolutionary pressures. We explore motivated behavior as a scale-free map toward a comprehensive translational theory of addiction. Motivational and behavioral repertoires are reframed as link and nodal element sets, respectively, comprising a scale-free structure. These sets are generated by semi-independent information-processing streams within cortical–striatal circuits that cooperatively provide decision-making and sequential processing functions necessary for traversing maps of motivational links connecting behavioral nodes. Dopamine modulation of cortical–striatal plasticity serves a central-hierarchical mechanism for survival-adaptive sculpting and development …

Relaxin Receptors In Hepatic Stellate Cells And Cirrhotic Liver, Robert G. Bennett, Shana R. Dalton, Katrina J. Mahan, Martha J. Gentry-Nielsen, Frederick G. Hamel, Dean J. Tuma Jan 2007

Relaxin Receptors In Hepatic Stellate Cells And Cirrhotic Liver, Robert G. Bennett, Shana R. Dalton, Katrina J. Mahan, Martha J. Gentry-Nielsen, Frederick G. Hamel, Dean J. Tuma

United States Public Health Resources

The polypeptide hormone relaxin has antifibrotic effects on a number of tissues, including the liver. Central to the progression of hepatic fibrosis is the transdifferentiation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC) from a quiescent state to an activated, myofibroblastic phenotype that secretes fibrillar collagen. Relaxin inhibits markers of HSC activation, but relaxin receptor expression in the liver is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the expression of the relaxin receptors LGR7 and LGR8 in activated HSC. Production of cAMP was induced by treatment of HSC with relaxin, or the relaxin-related peptides InsL3 or relaxin-3, selective activators of LGR8 …

Teachers' Perceptions On Implementation Of Rti, Steven Grant Tesar Jan 2007

Teachers' Perceptions On Implementation Of Rti, Steven Grant Tesar

Theses and Graduate Projects

Responsiveness to Intervention (RTI) is progressing its way through school districts and could be used as a new model for identifying learning disabilities, thus replacing the discrepancy model of learning disability identification. Although RTI was established within IDEA 2005 and the No Child Left Behind Act, school districts are slowly transitioning to thisinnovative, three-tiered process. The purpose of this study was to explore the implementation of RTI and introduce its use to elementary school teachers. Further, another goal of the study was to ascertain its connection to reading instruction and intervention already present in one elementary school and their views …

Thinking With Wolves: Left Legal Theory After The Right's Rise (Review Essay), Martha T. Mccluskey Jan 2007

Thinking With Wolves: Left Legal Theory After The Right's Rise (Review Essay), Martha T. Mccluskey

Book Reviews

Reviewing Wendy Brown & Janet Halley, Left Legalism/Left Critique (2001).

Left legal theory is in crisis. This crisis reflects a broader problem of contemporary U.S. politics: the lack of grand ideas capable of mobilizing meaningful opposition to the triumph of the political right. Right-wing legal theory has contributed to that dramatic political change by promoting ideas questioning the foundations of the twentieth century liberal welfare and regulatory state.

This review essay analyzes a rare recent attempt to revive left legal theory in the face of the right's triumph: the anthology Left Legalism/Left Critique edited by Wendy Brown and Janet Halley …

Identifying Fecal Sources In A Selected Catchment Reach Using Multiple Source-Tracking Tools, Jason R. Vogel, Donald M. Stoeckel, Regina Lamendella, Ronald B. Zelt, Jorge W. Santo Domingo, Steven R. Walker, Daniel B. Oerther Jan 2007

Identifying Fecal Sources In A Selected Catchment Reach Using Multiple Source-Tracking Tools, Jason R. Vogel, Donald M. Stoeckel, Regina Lamendella, Ronald B. Zelt, Jorge W. Santo Domingo, Steven R. Walker, Daniel B. Oerther

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Given known limitations of current microbial source-tracking (MST) tools, emphasis on small, simple study areas may enhance interpretations of fecal contamination sources in streams. In this study, three MST tools—Escherichia coli repetitive element polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR), coliphage typing, and Bacteroidales 16S rDNA host-associated markers—were evaluated in a selected reach of Plum Creek in south-central Nebraska. Water-quality samples were collected from six sites. One reach was selected for MST evaluation based on observed patterns of E. coli contamination. Despite high E. coli concentrations, coliphages were detected only once among water samples, precluding their use as a MST tool in …

A Toolkit For Assessing Fire Hazards, Elise Lequire Jan 2007

A Toolkit For Assessing Fire Hazards, Elise Lequire

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Whether the goal is to improve wildlife habitat, gauge the effects of prescribed burns or wildfire, or assess the unaccustomed conditions and hidden dangers of fallen trees in the aftermath of hurricanes, a suite of tools developed by the Fire and Environmental Research Applications (FERA) Team at the Pacific Northwest Research Station, Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Laboratory, allows resource managers to estimate fuel loads, fire hazards, and smoke emissions characteristics in a wide range of forest and grassland ecosystems. The Natural Fuels Photo Series, developed by FERA’s Roger Ottmar, is a field guide for resource managers who need a quick …

Estimation Of The Proportion Of Feed Protein Digested In The Small Intestine Of Cattle Consuming Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Paul J. Kononoff, S. K. Ivan, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2007

Estimation Of The Proportion Of Feed Protein Digested In The Small Intestine Of Cattle Consuming Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Paul J. Kononoff, S. K. Ivan, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to expand the database and determine the intestinal digestibility of rumen undegradable protein (dRUP) of common dairy feeds and to determine the effects of feeding 37.9% wet corn gluten feed on these estimates. Two ruminally and duodenally fistulated steers were assigned randomly to a crossover design with 4-wk periods. The mobile bag technique was used to determine rumen undegradable protein (RUP), dRUP, total tract digestible protein, and total tract digestible dry matter of alfalfa hay, brome hay, alfalfa haylage, corn silage, whole cottonseed, soybean meal, soyhulls, ground corn, nonenzymatically browned soybean meal, and dried …

Characterizing Linkage Disequilibrium In Pig Populations, Feng-Xing Du, Archie C. Clutter, Michael M. Lohuis Jan 2007

Characterizing Linkage Disequilibrium In Pig Populations, Feng-Xing Du, Archie C. Clutter, Michael M. Lohuis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Knowledge of the extent and range of linkage disequilibrium (LD), defined as non-random association of alleles at two or more loci, in animal populations is extremely valuable in localizing genes affecting quantitative traits, identifying chromosomal regions under selection, studying population history, and characterizing/managing genetic resources and diversity. Two commonly used LD measures, r2 and D’, and their permutation based adjustments, were evaluated using genotypes of more than 6,000 pigs from six commercial lines (two terminal sire lines and four maternal lines) at ~4,500 autosomal SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). The results indicated that permutation only partially removed the dependency of …

Predicting The Consequences Of Selecting On Prp Genotypes On Prp Frequencies, Performance And Inbreeding In Commercial Meat Sheep Populations, Wing-Young N. Man, Ronald M. Lewis, Kay Boulton, Beatrize Villanueva Jan 2007

Predicting The Consequences Of Selecting On Prp Genotypes On Prp Frequencies, Performance And Inbreeding In Commercial Meat Sheep Populations, Wing-Young N. Man, Ronald M. Lewis, Kay Boulton, Beatrize Villanueva

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Selection programmes based on prion protein (PrP) genotypes are being implemented for increasing resistance to scrapie. Commercial meat sheep populations participating in sire-referencing schemes were simulated to investigate the effect of selection on PrP genotypes on ARR and VRQ allele frequencies, inbreeding and genetic gain in a performance trait under selection. PrP selection strategies modelled included selection against the VRQ allele and in favour of the ARR allele. Assuming realistic initial PrP frequencies, selection against the VRQ allele had a minimal impact on performance and inbreeding. However, when selection was also in favour of the ARR allele and the frequency …

The Law Of Nature And The Early History Of Unenumerated Rights In The United States, Richard H. Helmholz Jan 2007

The Law Of Nature And The Early History Of Unenumerated Rights In The United States, Richard H. Helmholz

Articles

This Paper seeks to make a modest contribution to the topic of unenumerated rights in American constitutional law by examining the role that natural law played in our legal system at the time of the founding of the Republic-a period here taken, largely for the sake of convenience, to run from the 1 7 90s through the 1820s. The Paper's focus is on case law, rather than legal theory or constitutional doctrine, although I have tried to say enough about the law of nature as it was understood at the time to put the cases into their intellectual context. Whether …
