Building Artificially Intelligent Learning Games, Richard Van Eck Jan 2007

Building Artificially Intelligent Learning Games, Richard Van Eck

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

The idea of digital game-based learning (DGBL) is gaining acceptance among researchers, game designers, educators, parents, and students alike. Building new educational games that meet educational goals without sacrificing what makes games engaging remains largely unrealized, however. If we are to build the next generation of learning games, we must recognize that while digital games might be new, the theory and technologies we need to create DGBL has been evolving in multiple disciplines for the last 30 years. This chapter will describe an approach, based on theories and technologies in education, instructional design, artificial intelligence, and cognitive psychology, that will …

A Putative Approach For Influencing Stomatal Density By Over-Expressing Nadp-Dependent Malic Enzyme In Arabidopsis, Michael M. Gabor Jan 2007

A Putative Approach For Influencing Stomatal Density By Over-Expressing Nadp-Dependent Malic Enzyme In Arabidopsis, Michael M. Gabor

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Stomata are leaf structures critical for plant survival because they modulate the rate of transpiration. This study will examine a possible mode for regulating stomatal density by over-expressing NADP-dependent malic enzyme (NADP-ME), which is thought to deplete the counter-anion pool in Arabidopsis thaliana guard cells. It was hypothesized that over-expressing NADP-ME in Arabidopsis will elevate stomatal density. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to determine if any differences exist in numbers of stomatal complexes among transgenic lines and wild-type Arabidopsis. The results indicated a significant increase in stomatal numbers among some transgenic plant lines relative to the wild-type. Second, a series …

Association Of Smooth Muscle Myosin And Its Carboxyl Isoforms With Actin Isoforms In Aorta Smooth Muscle, Jason Edward Black Jan 2007

Association Of Smooth Muscle Myosin And Its Carboxyl Isoforms With Actin Isoforms In Aorta Smooth Muscle, Jason Edward Black

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The contraction mechanism of smooth muscle is not fully understood. The primary interaction that leads to the formation of tension, the myosin-actin crossbridge, has been studied extensively. However, even this aspect of the contraction has proven not to be as simple as it might seem. There are several isoforms of smooth muscle myosin and actin, and the differences in the activities of these isoforms and their interactions during the contractile process are largely unknown. The studies to be discussed are directed at the determination of the interaction of these isoforms during the contraction of rat aortic smooth muscle. Chapter II …

Regulation Of Hyphal Morphogenesis By Cdc42 And Rac1 Homologues In Aspergillus Nidulans, Aleksandra Virag, Maurice P. Lee, Haoyu Si, Steven D. Harris Jan 2007

Regulation Of Hyphal Morphogenesis By Cdc42 And Rac1 Homologues In Aspergillus Nidulans, Aleksandra Virag, Maurice P. Lee, Haoyu Si, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The ability of filamentous fungi to form hyphae requires the establishment and maintenance of a stable polarity axis. Based on studies in yeasts and animals, the GTPases Cdc42 and Rac1 are presumed to play a central role in organizing the morphogenetic machinery to enable axis formation and stabilization. Here, we report that Cdc42 (ModA) and Rac1 (RacA) share an overlapping function required for polarity establishment in Aspergillus nidulans. Nevertheless, Cdc42 appears to have a more important role in hyphal morphogenesis in that it alone is required for the timely formation of lateral branches. In addition, we provide genetic evidence …

Dietary Overlap Of An Alien And Native Carnivore On San Clemente Island, California, R. Brand Phillips, Clark S. Winchell, Robert H. Schmidt Jan 2007

Dietary Overlap Of An Alien And Native Carnivore On San Clemente Island, California, R. Brand Phillips, Clark S. Winchell, Robert H. Schmidt

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Predation by feral cats (Felis catus) is recognized as a major threat to native fauna worldwide, but the competitive effects of cats on native species have not been extensively studied. Cats occur on San Clemente Island, California, in sympatry with endemic island foxes (Urocyon littoralis clementae). We examined diets of cats and island foxes between years, seasons, and habitats to assess the potential for resource competition between the 2 species. Analysis of 602 cat and 958 fox feces revealed a high level of dietary overlap (O = 0.93) and relatively narrow niche breadths for both …

Development Of An Assay To Determine Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In The Prion Gene For The Genetic Diagnosis Of Relative Susceptibility To Classical Scrapie In Sheep, Mary Lynn Johnson, Jessica M. Evoniuk, Charles L. Stoltenow, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Dale A. Redmer Jan 2007

Redmer

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The objective of this study was to develop a reliable Taqman® 5' Nuclease Assay for genotyping sheep for scrapie susceptibility. The sheep prion gene contains 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that may mediate resistance to classical scrapie, one at codon 136, alanine (A) or valine (V), and another at codon 171, arginine (R) or glutamine (Q). The R allele appears to confer resistance to classical scrapie, with the AA136 RR171 genotype the most resistant to scrapie and QR171 only rarely infected in the US sheep population. The Assays by DesignSM protocol was used for development of …

Synthesis And Antimalarial Activity Of New Isotebuquine Analogues, Olga V. Miroshnikova, Thomas H. Hudson, Lucia Gerena, Dennis E. Kyle, Ai J. Lin Jan 2007

Synthesis And Antimalarial Activity Of New Isotebuquine Analogues, Olga V. Miroshnikova, Thomas H. Hudson, Lucia Gerena, Dennis E. Kyle, Ai J. Lin

United States Army: Publications

Amodiaquine (AQ) and tebuquine are 4-aminoquinoline antimalarials with Mannich base side chain and are highly effective against chloroquine (CQ)-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Clinical use of AQ has been severely restricted due to hepatoxicity and agranulocytosis side effects associated with its long term use. Lysosomal accumulation and bioactivation to generate reactive quinoneimine metabolite are implicated to be the cause of the observed AQ toxicities. To avoid the quinoneimine formation and thus the toxicity, a series of isotebuquine analogues and their Nω-oxides with hydroxy group meta to the amino rather than in para position of the aniline moiety …

Possible Use Of Repeated Cold Stress For Reducing Fatigue In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk Jan 2007

Possible Use Of Repeated Cold Stress For Reducing Fatigue In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk

Radiation Oncology Publications

Background Physiological fatigue can be defined as a reduction in the force output and/or energy-generating capacity of skeletal muscle after exertion, which may manifest itself as an inability to continue exercise or usual activities at the same intensity. A typical example of a fatigue-related disorder is chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a disabling condition of unknown etiology and with uncertain therapeutic options. Recent advances in elucidating pathophysiology of this disorder revealed hypofunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and that fatigue in CFS patients appears to be associated with reduced motor neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS) and to a smaller extent …

Green Frog (Rana Clamitans) Calling Habitat Associations: Are Males Selecting Calling Habitat More Closely Associated With Egg-Laying Or Predator Protection?, Denita Weeks

McNair Scholars Journal

Successful reproduction makes individuals evolutionarily fit but requires balancing costs. Literature suggests green frogs defend territories for breeding. Males will call in these territories to attract a mate. Unfortunately, calling may increase susceptibility to predation, requiring males to defend habitat with more protection. In contrast, females select the oviposition sites, potentially based on factors besides predation. Males defending habitat appropriate for oviposition may be more successful. We examined habitat for calling and egglaying to determine whether territoriality is associated with defending oviposition sites or protection from predators. Our results show that calling males are more closely associated with emergent vegetation, …

Gender And Racial Masquerade: Female Body Performance On The Late 19th Century And Early 20th Century Variety Stage, Kathleen M. Golden Jan 2007

Gender And Racial Masquerade: Female Body Performance On The Late 19th Century And Early 20th Century Variety Stage, Kathleen M. Golden

Iowa Journal of Communication

There were three women who were at the forefront of vaudeville's rise in popularity: May Irwin, Eva Tanguay, and Aida Overton Walker. These women represent, each in their own way, transformation and emergence of new gender and race roles in America. Irwin, Tanguay, and Walker developed individual styles of performance that both reinforced the accepted forms of discourse on the variety of stage, but also broke through barriers related to gender and race. Butler's (1997) work on performativity and her adoption of Austin's (1965) ideas on illocutionary and perlocutionary acts, and Bourdieu's (1991) concept of "social magic" inform this analysis.

Routes Of Exposure For Leptospirosis, Catherine C. Schmidt Jan 2007

Routes Of Exposure For Leptospirosis, Catherine C. Schmidt

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Leptospirosis was once a common zoonotic disease affecting most mammalian species. While it was once a very prevalent disease, it had tailored off only affecting humans with certain occupational hazards in developed countries. Recently, there has been an increase in the incidence of leptospirosis associated with recreational exposures and travel to tropical climates. Humans become infected with the disease through either direct or indirect contact with infected animal urine. Since leptospirosis has a longer survival period in wet, humid and warm conditions it is more prevalent in tropical and temperate climates and exposure peaks in the summer. There are a …

A Review Of Case-Control And Cohort Studies Examining Pesticides And The Risk Of Parkinson's Disease, Ruth Moytca Parks Jan 2007

A Review Of Case-Control And Cohort Studies Examining Pesticides And The Risk Of Parkinson's Disease, Ruth Moytca Parks

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer disease, having an annual incidence of approximately 20 per 100,000 people (Schapira 2004, Fischer 1999). An estimated one million persons in the United States have PD, and this prevalence is likely to rise as the population ages (Schapira 2004). This disorder is characterized pathologically by a loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta that produces the neurotransmitter dopamine. The clinical features of PD are motor function abnormalities including tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with balance. In the early stages of PD, treatments may …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Dna And Proteins: Force Field Parameter Development Of Small Ligands And Convergence Analysis For Simulations Of Biomolecules, Anne Loccisano Jan 2007

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Dna And Proteins: Force Field Parameter Development Of Small Ligands And Convergence Analysis For Simulations Of Biomolecules, Anne Loccisano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the first part of this dissertation, CHARMM force field parameters for DNA minor groove-binding polyamides were developed. The parameterization involved the subdivision of the polyamides into model compounds, which were calibrated against MP2/6-31G(d) data. To test the new parameters, fourteen 10 ns molecular dynamics crystal simulations have been carried out on a DNA/polyamide complex at low (113K) and high (300K) temperatures. Of the 18 helical parameters examined, only one (stagger) is found to be statistically significant from the crystal structure with a t-test at the 95% confidence level. For the high temperature, stagger is non-significant at the 97% confidence …

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Balance, Cognition And Arousal, Susan Elizabeth Chandler Jan 2007

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Balance, Cognition And Arousal, Susan Elizabeth Chandler

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The control group study investigated the impact of a mindfulness centering technique, taken from the Japanese martial art Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, on balance and reaction time performance as well as on concurrent levels of galvanic skin response (arousal). Study design and analysis occurred within a social neuroscience framework that included the cultural view of mind, body, and emotion as an integrated whole, and brain research from multiple disciplines revealing the neural integrated organism. Thirty-one subjects were tested in a visual-stimulus reaction time task and in an unstable rocker-board balancing task. Prior to repeating the tests, experimental group participants learned …

Scatology And The Sacred In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2007

Scatology And The Sacred In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

In his classic study, "The Dialectics of Creation," Michael Lieb foregrounds the myriad ways in which Milton uses scatology throughout "Paradise Lost" to describe the depravity of the devil. But Satan is not the only character in the epic to be associated with excretion. Milton's angels and Milton's God are also implicated in the operations of the lower bodily stratum. In these instances, however, allusions to the evacuative functions attest to an exalted divinity rather than a disgusting diabolism. Evacuation in "Paradise Lost" is thus a highly complex signifier. Not simply a pejorative pointing inevitably at a damnable degradation, scatology …

Behavioural Plasticity In An Ecological Generalist: Microhabitat Use By Western Fence Lizards, Dee A. Asbury, Stephen C. Adolph Jan 2007

Behavioural Plasticity In An Ecological Generalist: Microhabitat Use By Western Fence Lizards, Dee A. Asbury, Stephen C. Adolph

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Question: What is the basis for geographic variation in microhabitat use in fence lizards?

Hypothesis: Population differences in microhabitat use reflect behavioural plasticity rather than genetic or experiential differences.

Organisms: Western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis).

Field site: Three sites (desert, valley, and mountain) in southern California, USA.

Methods: We compared habitat use by free-ranging lizards in three field populations. We also collected lizards from these three populations and studied their microhabitat use in experimental enclosures at a single field site.

Results: In the wild, lizards chose higher and shadier perches at the hottest (desert) site, lower and sunnier perches at …
