A Unified Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan Jan 2007

A Unified Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Semantic Web seems to be evolving into a property-linked web of RDF data, conceptually divorced from (but physically housed in) the hyperlinked web of HTML documents. We discuss the Unified Web model that integrates the two webs and formalizes the structure and the semantics of interconnections between them. We also discuss the Hybrid Query Language which combines the Data and Information Retrieval techniques to provide a convenient and uniform way to retrieve data and documents from the Unified Web. We present the retrieval system SITAR and some preliminary results.

Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children: What Do We Know And What Do We Do About It?, U.S. Department Of Justice

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Much investigation remains to be done regarding the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). As with other “low visibility” crimes, there is a lurking “dark figure” of unreported cases. Moreover, little reliable information exists about the types of people who exploit children in this way.

The Story Of The Court: A Narrative Analysis Of Planned Parenthood V. Casey, Nicholas Short Jan 2007

The Story Of The Court: A Narrative Analysis Of Planned Parenthood V. Casey, Nicholas Short

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

To some degree, we are all storytellers, and we tell stories for a great variety of purposes: to animate speeches, to justify our conduct, and even to explain our opinions and views. These stories, or narratives, do a lot of work in human communication, and understanding them is essential to understanding the people that use them and the message they are attempting to send.

Because of the prevalence of narratives in everyday life, and their explanatory power, it is perhaps not surprising to find narratives being used even in more staunchly "academic" or "critical" contexts, such as works of history, …

Plant-Feeding Behaviour And Its Efects On The Fitness And Competence Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), Manda Hortance Manda Jan 2007

Plant-Feeding Behaviour And Its Efects On The Fitness And Competence Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), Manda Hortance Manda

All PhD Dissertations

Malaria remains a serious threat in sub-Saharan Africa Available control tools are now largely ineffective. Because of the role of vectors in malaria transmission, integrated vector management strategies that are environmentally safe, economically feasible and acceptable to resource-limited communities are one way to achieve effective malaria control. However, adequate knowledge of the biology, behaviour and ecology of the malaria vectors are imperative. Sugar-feeding from plants is a basic requirement for adult mosquitoes, and so far have received little attention. The present study, conducted in Suba district (a malaria endemic area of western Kenya), aimed to investigate the plant-feeding behaviour and …

Welcome To The College Of The Future: A Productive Society Of Soulless Shells, Mason Shelby Jan 2007

Welcome To The College Of The Future: A Productive Society Of Soulless Shells, Mason Shelby

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Donnie didn’t like it when the drugs wore off. He hated that empty feeling, that feeling that there was a hole in his chest where his heart should be. It reminded Donnie of something that he had learned in history class: people used to believe in something called a soul, which was said to be the essence of a person, a ghostly vapor that seemed to dwell deep inside each and every human being. Of course, scientists had long since proved the nonexistence of souls. Finally arriving at floor one hundred and eighty-four, Donnie shook his head of such thoughts. …

A Small Price To Pay To Save A Failing System, James Edmonds Jan 2007

A Small Price To Pay To Save A Failing System, James Edmonds

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

The problem, as noted on the Bush administration’s “Strengthening Social Security” webpage, is that in 1950, there were sixteen workers to support every single person who drew from Social Security; today there are 3.3. Under the current system, a thirty-year-old worker will face a twenty-seven percent cut in his or her benefits when he or she finally is old enough to claim them. Something has to change.

James Edmonds is a freshman SMAD major. He has a passion for writing about issues that he thinks others should be aware of, and hopes to one day extend this passion into the …

Reports Of Transpersonal Experiences By Non-Native Practitioners Of The Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremony: A Critical Appraisal, Whit Hibbard Jan 2007

Reports Of Transpersonal Experiences By Non-Native Practitioners Of The Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremony: A Critical Appraisal, Whit Hibbard

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Interviews with 30 experienced non-native practitioners of the Native American sweat lodge

ceremony revealed 184 reports of transpersonal experiences. Interview questions sought to (a)

disclose how practitioners discern or critique their own experiences, (b) consider alternative

explanations for practitioners’ experiences, and (c) critically reflect on the sweat lodge

ceremony per se as a spiritual practice. It was found that practitioners generally (a) interpreted

their experiences as trustworthy interactions with a spiritual reality, (b) did not seriously

consider alternative explanations for their experiences, and (c) neglected to reflect critically

on the sweat lodge ceremony per se as a spiritual practice.
