Coping With High-Priced Corn, Cody Wright, Ken Olson, Julie Walker, Erik Loe, Alvaro Garcia Jan 2007

Coping With High-Priced Corn, Cody Wright, Ken Olson, Julie Walker, Erik Loe, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Feed costs represent 50 to 70% of livestock production expenses and are a critical component of livestock profitability. In the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Plains, corn grain is a primary source of energy in livestock diets. Consequently, as the price of corn escalates, so does the cost of feeding livestock. But cost isn’t all: you also must address dietary and management considerations when coping with increased corn prices.

High Priced Corn And Dairy Cow Rations, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur, Arnold Hippen, Rebecca Schafer Jan 2007

High Priced Corn And Dairy Cow Rations, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur, Arnold Hippen, Rebecca Schafer

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Corn grain usually makes up 30 to 35% of the total ration dry matter (DM) of a typical Midwest lactating cow diet. Changes in its price, therefore, can have a significant impact on total feed costs. Even with high corn prices, however, it is unlikely that corn grain will be removed completely from the ration. Corn grain, due to its high starch content, permits the formulation of energy-dense rations required by cows with high genetic merit for milk production. Adequate starch concentrations in corn grain also promote growth of rumen bacteria and protozoa essential for optimum forage fermentation. On the …

If You Find A Dead Bird— And Wonder If It Has The Bird Flu Virus, E. Kim Cassel, Tanya D. Graham, Lon Kightlinger Jan 2007

If You Find A Dead Bird— And Wonder If It Has The Bird Flu Virus, E. Kim Cassel, Tanya D. Graham, Lon Kightlinger

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

South Dakotans have been vigilant, sending dead blue jays, magpies, crows, hawks, owls, and eagles into the South Dakota Department of Health, seeking to know if the birds died fromWest Nile virus (WNV). We can stop looking. WNV is in South Dakota to stay. There is nothing further we can learn from testing birds forWNV. Therefore, if you find an individual dead blue jay, magpie, or crow, dispose of the bird, taking the safety precautions listed on the next page. But we cannot let down our guard. Birds are considered to be reservoirs for almost all influenza virsues, and occasionally …

A Geographically Constrained Molecular Phylogeny Of Panamanian Aechmea Species (Bromeliaceae, Subfamily Bromelioideae), Keri Renee Maher

Theses Digitization Project

This study lends strong support to the idea that members of Bromeliaceae have undergone a recent adaptive radiation, and therefore show that, at least in part, diversity in the tropics is due to a fast speciation rate and that the tropics can be a "cradle" for new diversification and exploitation of varying ecological niches through the diversification of ecophysiological traits within a lineage.

Theses Digitization Project

Using methodologies of interviews and observation, this study focuses on three distinctive and successful kinds of experiential education: a summer arts program, an outdoor science program and a wilderness education program. The project applies insights from the programs to the central question of this thesis: How can experiential learning be utilized within the traditional classroom given the constraints of the No Child Left Behind Law and standardized teaching?

The Yellowstone Hotspot, Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, And Human Geography, Kenneth L. Pierce, Don G. Despain, Lisa A. Morgan, John M. Good Jan 2007

The Yellowstone Hotspot, Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, And Human Geography, Kenneth L. Pierce, Don G. Despain, Lisa A. Morgan, John M. Good

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Active geologic processes associated with the Yellowstone hotspot are fundamental in shaping the landscapes of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem (GYE), a high volcanic plateau flanked by a crescent of still higher mountainous terrain. The processes associated with the Yellowstone hotspot are volcanism, faulting, and uplift and are observed in the geology at the surface. We attribute the driving forces responsible for the northeastward progression of these processes to a thermal plume rising through the Earth’s mantle into the base of the southwest-moving North American plate. This progression began 16 million years ago (Ma) near the Nevada-Oregon border and arrived at …

Trypanothione Reductase: A Viable Chemotherapeutic Target For Antitrypanosomal And Antileishmanial Drug Design, M. O. Faruk Khan Jan 2007

Trypanothione Reductase: A Viable Chemotherapeutic Target For Antitrypanosomal And Antileishmanial Drug Design, M. O. Faruk Khan

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis are two debilitating disease groups caused by parasites of Trypanosoma and Leishmania spp. and affecting millions of people worldwide. A brief outline of the potential targets for rational drug design against these diseases are presented, with an emphasis placed on the enzyme trypanothione reductase. Trypanothione reductase was identified as unique to parasites and proposed to be an effective target against trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. The biochemical basis of selecting this enzyme as a target, with reference to the simile and contrast to human analogous enzyme glutathione reductase, and the structural aspects of its active site are presented. The …

The Long And Winding Road: Influences Of Intracellular Metabolite Diffusion On Cellular Organization And Metabolism In Skeletal Muscle, Stephen T. Kinsey, Kristin M. Hardy, Bruce R. Locke Jan 2007

The Long And Winding Road: Influences Of Intracellular Metabolite Diffusion On Cellular Organization And Metabolism In Skeletal Muscle, Stephen T. Kinsey, Kristin M. Hardy, Bruce R. Locke

Biological Sciences

A fundamental principle of physiology is that cells are small in order to minimize diffusion distances for O2 and intracellular metabolites. In skeletal muscle, it has long been recognized that aerobic fibers that are used for steady state locomotion tend to be smaller than anaerobic fibers that are used for burst movements. This tendency reflects the interaction between diffusion distances and aerobic ATP turnover rates, since maximal intracellular diffusion distances are ultimately limited by fiber size. The effect of diffusion distance on O2 flux in muscle has been the subject of quantitative analyses for a century, but the …

Managing Trade-Offs In Call Center Agent Scheduling: Methodology And Case Study, Vijay Mehrotra Jan 2007

Managing Trade-Offs In Call Center Agent Scheduling: Methodology And Case Study, Vijay Mehrotra

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper develops a flexible and tractable scheduling methodology that produces near-optimal call center agent schedules while taking into account the costs associated with customer waiting time, customer abandonment, and call center agents. Our methodology combines integer programming (to find a desirable staffing plan for a given total number of agents) and simulation modeling (to evaluate the weekly costs of a given staffing plan). We describe the advantages of this approach over the traditional scheduling method, and test both methods by building schedules based on actual demand and shift data from an actual call center operated by Expedia.com under a …

The Anglican Church Of Rwanda: Domestic Agendas And International Linkages, Phillip A. Cantrell Jan 2007

The Anglican Church Of Rwanda: Domestic Agendas And International Linkages, Phillip A. Cantrell

History, Political Science & Philosophy Faculty Publications

The article analyses the relationship between the Anglican Church of Rwanda and evangelical Episcopalians in the United States. In 2000, the archbishop of Rwanda, Emmanuel Kolini, in a move that gained great support for Rwanda's post-genocide recovery, ordained several bishops to preside over congregations of orthodox, evangelical Americans who had severed their relationship with the Episcopalian Church of the United States over issues such as the blessing of same- sex marriages and the ordination of openly gay clergy. The result was the creation of the Anglican Mission in the Americas, a missionary province in the United States that acknowledges Kolini …
