Generalized Mixture Models, Semi-Supervised Learning, And Unknown Class Inference, Samuel J. Frame, Sreenivasa Rao Jammalamadaka

Statistics

In this paper, we discuss generalized mixture models and related semi-supervised learning methods, and show how they can be used to provide explicit methods for unknown class inference. After a brief description of standard mixture modeling and current model-based semi-supervised learning methods, we provide the generalization and discuss its computational implementation using three-stage expectation–maximization algorithm.

Kin Selection Does Not Explain Male Aggregation At Leks Of 4 Manakin Species, Bette Loiselle, Thomas Ryder, Renata Durães, Wendy Tori, John Blake, Patricia Parker Mar 2007

Kin Selection Does Not Explain Male Aggregation At Leks Of 4 Manakin Species, Bette Loiselle, Thomas Ryder, Renata Durães, Wendy Tori, John Blake, Patricia Parker

Biology Department Faculty Works

In lek-mating systems, males aggregate at display arenas and females visit solely for the purpose of mating. This breeding system is characterized by high variance in male mating success with one male often receiving most copulations. High reproductive skew among males has led to question why males join leks when their chances of reproductive success are so low. Kin selection has been invoked as a mechanism to explain the evolution of lekking behavior, whereby nonreproducing but genetically related males gain indirect inclusive-fitness benefits. Evidence for kin selection among lek-mating birds is, however, mixed. Here, we show that kin selection is …

Oocyte Cytoplasmic Maturation: A Key Mediator Of Oocyte And Embryo Developmental Competence., A J Watson Mar 2007

Oocyte Cytoplasmic Maturation: A Key Mediator Of Oocyte And Embryo Developmental Competence., A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Efforts have intensified to successfully mature and inseminate oocytes in vitro and then culture ensuing embryos to transferable stages from a large number of mammalian species. Success varies, but generally even for the most successful species it is only possible to obtain a maximum of a 40 to 50% development of zygotes to the blastocyst stage. Reduced oocyte developmental competence is suggested as a primary reason for the reduced potential of in vitro-produced embryos. The vast majority of in vitro-matured oocytes are meiotically competent; however, many do not attain an optimal oocyte diameter before insemination. Variations in oocyte in vitro …

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

To scope and clearly define current and future needs for aquatic animal health training and for systems for merit-based accreditation and competency assessments.

Provision of high quality aquatic animal health (AAH) services is a complex multidisciplinary activity. Hence, training programs must address all discipline areas to achieve the desired outcome of robust service delivery to meet all stakeholder group needs. The current and future needs for AAH training have been identified across many sectors through survey work and direct interviews with key stakeholders. There is a shortfall in both total capacity and more prominently, in the availability of high skill …

Engaging Children With Useful Words: Vocabulary Instruction In A Third Grade Classroom, Lynn Cohen, Katherine Byrnes Mar 2007

Engaging Children With Useful Words: Vocabulary Instruction In A Third Grade Classroom, Lynn Cohen, Katherine Byrnes

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This action research project investigated 2 different instructional procedures used for third grade students' vocabulary acquisition. We researched read-aloud trade books containing targeted vocabulary words with daily direct word learning strategies and compared that to a traditional definitional approach with 12 bilingual and 4 monolingual children. Instruction was limited to 6 words each week for 4 consecutive weeks. Findings suggested that children used more targeted words in oral and written communications when provided literature and word learning strategies.

Maggot Development During Morgue Storage And Its Effect On Estimating The Post-Mortem Interval, Timothy Huntington, Leon G. Higley, Frederick P. Baxendale Mar 2007

Maggot Development During Morgue Storage And Its Effect On Estimating The Post-Mortem Interval, Timothy Huntington, Leon G. Higley, Frederick P. Baxendale

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

When insect evidence is obtained during autopsy, forensic entomologists make decisions regarding the effects of low-temperature (−1°C to 4°C) storage of the body and associated insects when estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI). To determine the effects of storage in a morgue cooler on the temperature of maggot masses, temperatures inside and outside of body bags containing a human cadaver and porcine cadavers (seven replicates) were measured during storage. Temperatures remained significantly higher (p < 0.05) inside of the body bags relative to the cooler, and remained at levels sufficient for maggot feeding and development. If the assumption that no insect development takes place during preautopsy refrigeration is made, potential error rates in PMI estimation of 8.6–12.8% occur. The potential for blow fly larvae to undergo significant development while being stored in the morgue is a possibility that forensic entomologists should consider during an investigation involving samples collected from autopsy. Case and experimental evidence also demonstrate that substantial tissue loss can occur from maggot feeding during morgue storage.

Analysis Of Fat Intake Based On The U.S. Department Of Agriculture’S 1994–96, 1998 Continuing Survey Of Food Intakes By Individuals (Csfii), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Many chemicals found in the environment tend to accumulate in fatty tissue. Assessing potential risks from these chemicals in food requires knowledge of dietary habits and the amount of fat present in various types of foods. The National Center for Environmental Assessment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Office of Research and Development has conducted an analysis of fat consumption across the U.S. population. The analysis used data derived from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 1994–96 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII) and its 1998 Supplemental Children’s Survey and the EPA’s Food Commodity Intake Database (FCID). Percentiles …

Papers in Microbiology

Candida albicans cells of opposite mating types are thought to conjugate during infection in mammalian hosts, but paradoxically, the mating-competent opaque state is not stable at mammalian body temperatures. We found that anaerobic conditions stabilize the opaque state at 37°C, block production of farnesol, and permit in vitro mating at 37°C at efficiencies of up to 84%. Aerobically, farnesol prevents mating because it kills the opaque cells necessary for mating, and as a corollary, farnesol production is turned off in opaque cells. These in vitro observations suggest that naturally anaerobic sites, such as the efficiently colonized gastrointestinal (GI) tract, could …
