The Spatial Distribution Of Coccidia In Arkansas Freshwater Snails, Julia R. Pye, Taylor M. Fiedor, Jason M. Post, Kyle D. Gustafson
Create@State
Coccidia are obligate, intracellular parasites that infect the digestive tracts of many animals and cause coccidosis, which can result in vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, death. At broader scales, the disease contributes to substantial economic losses in agriculture. Our study examined the distribution of Pfeifferinella ellipsoides, a coccidian parasite in freshwater snails. Based on previous research, we hypothesized that (1) there will be statistically significant spatial clustering in northern Arkansas and (2) the parasite will be found exclusively in two snail genera, Physa and Planorbella. We sampled 17 snail species and surveyed feces for oocysts from 1,920 snails and …

Iraqi Journal of Architecture and Planning
Many countries aim to preserve their cultural heritage, encompassing both tangible and intangible aspects. This is achieved through various techniques, including digital methods, to record and document heritage buildings. One of the most prominent and widely used techniques is Photogrammetry, which is used for both three-dimensional and two-dimensional levels. Numerous studies have explored this technique and discussed its application to various types of buildings, including heritage and archaeological structures. The reviewed literature reveals a lack of application of this technique in architectural studies focused on preserving the built heritage of the city of Basra, particularly buildings with a religious character, …

Absurdity In Human Architecture Between Healing And Illness, Tuqa Mahmood Hameed, Ibrahim Jawad Al-Yousif
Iraqi Journal of Architecture and Planning
Despite the evolution of architecture throughout the ages, it still exhibits a clear contrast between order and chaos, where ideas and forms intertwine to produce a diversity of outcomes between creativity and failure, healing and illness. This contrast highlights the presence of absurdity in contemporary architectural projects, serving as a rhetorical tool that challenges architectural conventions and expands the boundaries of human reason by presenting innovative solutions. Accordingly, the research problem is represented by the lack of a comprehensive understanding of the role of absurdity in shaping human architecture. The aim of the research was to reveal the role of …

Weaknesses Of Opponents, Strengths Of The Taliban: The Success Of The Taliban Insurgency, Isabella Ryan
Weaknesses Of Opponents, Strengths Of The Taliban: The Success Of The Taliban Insurgency, Isabella Ryan
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
How did the Taliban insurgency succeed in gaining control of the Afghan state in 2021 following the collapse of the Taliban regime in 2001? This paper argues that the Taliban’s success resulted from two key dynamics: the weaknesses of opponents and strengths of the Taliban. The Afghan State was undermined by governance failures including the 2004 Constitution, overcentralization, lack of rural governance, corruption, and a dependence on foreign aid. These internal weaknesses were compounded by international policy failures, including the Bonn Agreement, inconsistent counterinsurgency (COIN) and counterterrorism (CT) strategies, the failed peace process design embedded in the Doha Agreement, and …

Transmission Pathways And Critical Practices Of Ethical Literary Criticism In Malaysia: A Case Study Of Florence Kuek’S An Ethical Literary Criticism Of Han Suyin’S Autobiography: Braving Irrationality, Hongxia Zheng, Liangqiao Zhang
Kritika Kultura
This study investigates how Ethical Literary Criticism—a Chinese-originated theoretical paradigm developed by Nie Zhenzhao—has been transmitted to, localized within, and advanced by the Malaysian scholarly community. Drawing on archival research, bibliometric surveying, and close reading, the article first reconstructs a multi-layered network of transmission pathways that includes returning Malaysian post-graduates from Chinese universities, the importation of foundational Ethical Literary Criticism texts, sustained coverage in bi-lingual academic journals, and participation in international conferences such as those organized by the International Association for Ethical Literary Criticism. It then analyzes the reception of Ethical Literary Criticism in Malaysia, showing how scholars adapt core …

“We Malaysian” Or “We Chinese”?: Navigating Archipelagic Negative Affects In Jason Leong’S Anglophone Stand-Up Comedy, Harry Shi, Sophie Xu
Kritika Kultura
In this article, we argue that negative affects play crucial roles in shaping the identity of Malaysian Chinese within the context of Anglophone stand-up comedy. While prior studies on stand-up comedy have largely focused on individual affects such as shame or anger, little attention has been paid to the relational and synergistic dynamics of negative affects, particularly within racialized and postcolonial contexts. To address this gap, we conceptualize stand-up comedy as an affective arena, which allows for a nuanced examination of enduring social issues in Malaysia around conflicts and disparities in race and culture. To this end, we adopt an …

Archipelagic Monstrosity: The Manananggal In Isabel Yap’S “Good Girls”, Kam Tou Pang
Kritika Kultura
Discussions about the monster have always hinged on the modes of othering or assimilation, yet through mobilizing negative and positive affective registers respectively, they both objectify the monster in service of a normativizing agenda of managing the abnormal, eventually inhibiting the monster’s potentialities in feeling and relating otherwise. This essay traces the historicities of the manananggal, a Philippine folkloric monster, and compares key cultural and literary representations within and beyond the Philippines. In particular, it examines the short story “Good Girls” from the speculative short story collection Never Have I Ever (2021) by the transnational Filipina American writer Isabel Yap. …
Post-Anthropocentric Relations Unbound: Affirmative Ethics Of Loneliness In Children’S Robinsonades, Chengcheng You
Post-Anthropocentric Relations Unbound: Affirmative Ethics Of Loneliness In Children’S Robinsonades, Chengcheng You
Kritika Kultura
Informed by critical island studies, loneliness studies and posthumanist thought, with a particular emphasis on Rosi Braidotti’s propositions of affirmative ethics and zoe, this study focuses on children’s Robinsonades, specifically Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins (1960) and Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot (2016), to examine how the isolation setting intensifies characters’ experiences of loneliness in a productive tension with the island’s abundant ecological responsiveness. It delves into the shift in loneliness from negative to affirmative, and its narrative potential for crafting a posthuman condition in which the recognition of zoe elicits post-anthropocentric relations. Through intersectional theoretical lenses, loneliness …

Introduction: Waves Of Emotion: Theorizing Archipelagic Affects, Jeremy De Chavez
Kritika Kultura
This essay introduces this issue’s Forum Kritika on Waves of Emotion: Theorizing Archipelagic Affects which gathers representative papers presented at the Critical Island Studies Colloquium held at the University of Macau in April 2024. It begins with a reflection on the concept of archipelagic affects by first moving affects and emotions beyond the confines of continental thought and then resituating them within an archipelagic frame attuned to colonial histories, diasporic routes, and Indigenous epistemologies, while emphasizing relationality over totality, opacity over mastery, and multiplicity over singularity. To honor that shift, this essay abandons the conventional introductory responsibilities of framing and …
Beyond Romance: Feminist Imagination Of Intimacy In Female-Centered Mengnü (Dream Girl) Fan-Fiction On Chinese Social Media, Gemma Yantao Sun
Beyond Romance: Feminist Imagination Of Intimacy In Female-Centered Mengnü (Dream Girl) Fan-Fiction On Chinese Social Media, Gemma Yantao Sun
Kritika Kultura
This article examines female-centered mengnü fan-fiction emerging on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu as a feminist recontextualization of heteronormative romantic narratives. Unlike conventional mengnü fiction, which centers on male protagonists and heterosexual desire, these storiettes center female celebrities and intimacies between women. Drawing on frameworks of post-romantic culture and feminist criticism, this article read texts of this new genre through two dimensions. First, it examines how these narratives articulate emotionally intense yet ambiguous relationships. From these emerge nomadic, non-binary, and nonteleological forms of intimacy that resist fixed binary categories. Second, the study investigates how these fantasies of nomadic intimacy …
From Affective Placemaking To Fandom Activism: A Reinterpretation Of Contents Tourism In The Context Of K-Drama Fandom, Hanki Jo, Areum Choi
From Affective Placemaking To Fandom Activism: A Reinterpretation Of Contents Tourism In The Context Of K-Drama Fandom, Hanki Jo, Areum Choi
Kritika Kultura
This study reconceptualizes contents tourism not as simple consumption or sightseeing but as a cyclical structure of affective practices—an “affective practice loop”—comprising emotional invocation, spatial performativity, and digital narrativization. This analytical framework explains how fans respond affectively to media narratives, project emotions performatively onto places, and digitally narrativize these experiences, thereby co-constructing personal identity and cultural space. Using the 2024 Korean drama Lovely Runner as a case study, this study shows how this loop is enacted through field-level fan engagement in contents tourism. It further reinterprets fandom practices along this sequence, not as mere media consumption but as fandom activism …

How Does Fandom Contribute To Content Ip Value Formation?: Proposal For Fandom Asset Model, Sungmin Lee, Kyuchan Kim
Kritika Kultura
Despite the escalating importance of intellectual property (IP) in the entertainment industry, perspectives for assessing its holistic value beyond the conventional legal framework have been insufficiently discussed. This study posits fandom as a core source in the formation of value for content-based IP. To this end, the study critically examines the limitations of traditional IP perspectives and aims to establish a theoretical foundation for a fandom-centric theory of IP value by drawing upon participatory culture theory and brand equity theory. Furthermore, this paper proposes the Fandom Asset Model (FAM), which incorporates the scale (S), intensity (I), and duration (D) of …
