Distribution Concourse: Concepts For A Post-Commericalized Landscape Within An Increasingly Networked Culture, Nathan P. Miller May 2007

Distribution Concourse: Concepts For A Post-Commericalized Landscape Within An Increasingly Networked Culture, Nathan P. Miller

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

DISTRIBUTION CONCOURSE is design research thesis which proposes a reconfiguration of large “emptied-out” blocks of commercial space. Space planning strategies which have led to the emergence of commercial artifacts, such as the dead mall, are evaluated against new commercial models which rely on distribution and digital networks.

Under the premise that digital commercial practices are changing how we consider the private-sector in relation to urban infrastructure, DISTRIBUTION CONCOURSE promotes a new urban organizational scheme which may thrive in post-commercialized areas of the city.

Services such as Amazon.com and the availability of wireless internet across entire city grids have made ambiguous …

Beliefs Of Violence-Sensitive And Violence-Tolerant People, Amethyst Brell May 2007

Beliefs Of Violence-Sensitive And Violence-Tolerant People, Amethyst Brell

Senior Honors Projects

Every person views the world through a different lens, and one can never fully understand the motivations and opinions of someone else. However, experiments and statistics can shed some light onto people’s thought patterns and behaviors. When horrific acts of violence occur, many people strive to understand why they happen. Through my study I hope to help solve some of the mysteries behind the different ways people interpret violence. I want to see why some people tend to be more sensitive to violence and why some are more tolerant of violence. I am doing this by building on previous research …

Senior Honors Projects

This article or section or project is not written in the formal tone expected of an honors project. Please improve it or discuss changes on the talk page. See URI's guide to writing better articles for suggestions. For years, various groups have predicted the end of the world, usually a spiritual or nuclear armageddon. Religious groups have predicted the second coming, Hollywood directors have predicted devastating wars with artificial intelligence, and conspiracy theorists predicted Y2K, among others. But every year, the world keeps not ending (widely regarded by scholars as a good thing). And while the world may not end …

Effect Of Readability On Living Environment Regents Exam Question Success, Janis B. Becker May 2007

Effect Of Readability On Living Environment Regents Exam Question Success, Janis B. Becker

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

This study evaluated how test readability affects results of a New York State Living Environment (Biology) Regents examination. In an effort to determine what percentage of middle school students might struggle with such an exam because of a lack of sufficient English/Language Arts (ELA) abilities instead of a just a lack of science knowledge, two versions of a section of a Regents exam were administered to six 8th- grade classes at a suburban school. Readability of the exam was altered for one group by rewording questions and multiple-choice answers; scientific content and vocabulary remained unaltered for all. In all classes, …

A Clash Of Cultures: Cultural Differences Within American And Japanese Animation, Alexander Nghiem Frasier

Communication Theses - Archive

This research examines the Japanese cultural phenomenon of anime, and the cultural values that allow issues deemed more suitable for adults to be included in anime and viewed by all ages in Japan, but not in the United States. This study used five focus groups: two consisting of Non-Asian participants, one with Japanese participants, and two with Amerasian participants. Each focus group was shown clips from the anime films Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Princess Mononoke. Geert Hofstede's intercultural value dimensions were used as a guide to find greater meaning of the impact of anime …

A grounded theory design was utilized to explore KA elders' perceptions/experiences associated with adjustment to a nursing home. Open-ended, …

Experiences Of Sacramental Marriage, James Patrick O'Brien Edd May 2007

Experiences Of Sacramental Marriage, James Patrick O'Brien Edd

Dissertations

This study interprets the stories told by eight couples about their experiences approaching marriage as a religious sacrament. The eight couples represented a purposeful sample selected using the following criteria: (a) They self-identified as having a sacramental marriage within the Roman Catholic tradition; (b) they appeared to be information rich sources who could provide an emic, i.e., an insider, view of the sacramental marriage experience; (c) they participated in the Catholic Cursillo movement; (d) they engaged in observable religious practices; and (e) they parented children. Research methods included guided conversation, participant observation, and a timeline activity that asked participants to …

Emerging Elements Of Leadership In A Complex System: A Cognitivist Approach, Kirsten Suzanne Hanson Edd May 2007

Emerging Elements Of Leadership In A Complex System: A Cognitivist Approach, Kirsten Suzanne Hanson Edd

Dissertations

As our world grows increasingly complicated at an intensified pace, leaders must be facile managers of complexity if organizations and society are to productively and peacefully evolve. Today’s global corporations are microcosms of complexity and have the potential to affect life for almost all other species. However, many organizations have not yet become aware of themselves as “living” and still operate as industrial age institutions with rationalist thinking traditionally dominating management practice. Many factors impact an organization’s overall effectiveness. Yet, executive leaders are seen as having the ability to influence change and play a vital role in helping people navigate …

Sexual Conflict Over Egg Allocation: A Dynamic Programming Approach To Modeling The Evolution Of Male Harm And Female Resistance, David Kelley May 2007

Sexual Conflict Over Egg Allocation: A Dynamic Programming Approach To Modeling The Evolution Of Male Harm And Female Resistance, David Kelley

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Sexual conflict, which is expected to be ubiquitous among polygamous species, is known to occasionally result in male adaptations that are harmful to females. One theoretical model indicates that males may benefit from physically harming their mates by triggering a “terminal investment” reproductive response by them. Using dynamic programming, we explore how females optimize their lifetime egg allocation, how selection acts on males to exploit such allocation, and how females respond to resist this exploitation. The model reveals alternative female response pathways; one of the most effective of which is simply to forgo plasticity in egg allocation. By switching to …

Against Acting 'Humanely', Michael Goldberg May 2007

Against Acting 'Humanely', Michael Goldberg

Mercer Law Review

Who could possibly be against acting 'humanely'?

I, for one, am willing to be charged with such an offense, for the charge is too broad. What precisely does it mean to act 'humanely'? Name some cases of exemplary individuals acting 'humanely' to give some kind of context for the charge; furnish some case histories that depict specific human beings who stand as virtual metaphors of 'humanity at its best.' I maintain such narratives as these are indispensable if our talk of acting 'humanely' is to have any real content. They provide the various contexts within which we can see what …

Non-Redundant And Critical Roles For Leukotriene B4 Receptors Blt1 And Blt2 In Mouse Models Of Inflammatory Arthritis., Steven Mathis 1979- May 2007

Non-Redundant And Critical Roles For Leukotriene B4 Receptors Blt1 And Blt2 In Mouse Models Of Inflammatory Arthritis., Steven Mathis 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inflammation is now recognized as an important factor in several age-related diseases such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. In each case, sub-clinical chronic inflammation occurs over years and leads to progressive destruction of the tissue until the symptoms become clinically apparent. Eicosanoids such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes play an important role in inflammation. Among these, leukotriene B 4 (LTB 4 ) has had a long history of being associated with numerous inflammatory diseases. A high affinity receptor for LTB 4 , LTB 4 receptor 1 (BLT 1) has been well-characterized in human and murine tissues. While the molecular …
