Outcomes Of The Wetline Review. The Minister For Fisheries’ Decisions In Relation To The Future Management Of The West Coast And Gascoyne Commercial “Wetline” Fisheries, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia. May 2007

Outcomes Of The Wetline Review. The Minister For Fisheries’ Decisions In Relation To The Future Management Of The West Coast And Gascoyne Commercial “Wetline” Fisheries, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia.

Fisheries Management Papers

This document details my final decisions on the new management arrangements for the West Coast and Gascoyne commercial ‘wetline’ fisheries. The decisions that are set out in this document will form an important part of the holistic management package required to ensure the long-term sustainability of our demersal scalefish resources in the West Coast and Gascoyne bioregions. The new Management Plans will provide the framework within which commercial scalefish catches can be explicitly managed to sustainable levels and will promote greater commercial certainty and confidence for those operators who gain access to the fishery.

A Piece Of Land: Black Women And Land In South Africa And The United States Of America, Alessandra Williams May 2007

A Piece Of Land: Black Women And Land In South Africa And The United States Of America, Alessandra Williams

American Studies Honors Projects

Despite some social and political changes in the post-reconstruction and post-apartheid eras of the United States and South Africa, land has remained a commodified and privatized resource that has enabled capitalism to flourish in an individualistic, highly competitive, and profit-driven manner. The modern land reform processes of the Western Cape, South Africa demonstrate how neo-liberal land policies pose numerous constraints to the financial development of historically disadvantaged groups such as women. However, black women during the sharecropping era of the Mississippi Delta (1877-1950), reveal the ways in which disenfranchised women have the ability to be grassroots activists and change agents …

A Simple And Improved Pcr-Based Technique For White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Sex Identification, Alec R. Lindsay Ph. D., Jerrold L. Belant May 2007

A Simple And Improved Pcr-Based Technique For White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Sex Identification, Alec R. Lindsay Ph. D., Jerrold L. Belant

Faculty Works

We describe a simple single-reaction technique for identifying the sex of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) based on the PCR amplification of a zinc-finger intron using one pair of primers. Although Sry-coamplification confirmed sex identities, use of the Sry marker was unnecessary due to dimorphic alleles on the X and Y chromosomes at the zinc-finger locus. Insertions in intron 7 of the Y-linked allele (417 bp) make it nearly twice as long as the X-linked allele (236 bp) and thus the amplification products are easily discernable by simple agarose gel electrophoresis. The relatively short size of these products makes them useful …

A Proposed Model For Enhanced Spiritual Connectedness, Dottie Shuman May 2007

A Proposed Model For Enhanced Spiritual Connectedness, Dottie Shuman

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

As I read through the literature on spirituality in wilderness and reflected on my own experiences, two conclusions emerged worth sharing in this paper. 1) While in the wilderness, people describe a sense of something greater than themselves and 2) people emerge from the wilderness as changed people, sometimes intentionally going to the wilderness to be changed. These two ideas might cause those of us who are training outdoor leaders to pause for a moment. If people are changing as a result of their time in wilderness, how can leaders strengthen that impact? In addition, Louv (2006), at the first …

How Preference Plays A Role In Gender And Details, Jennifer Anstead, Brittni Martin May 2007

How Preference Plays A Role In Gender And Details, Jennifer Anstead, Brittni Martin

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

How preference plays a role in gender and details was examined and evaluated in this experiment. We used Lindenwood University's Human Subject Pool to recruit 30 participants, 16 females and 14 males. Our purpose was to see whether the participants found more differences between the pairs of pictures they preferred over the less preferred pictures. We used gender stereotypical pictures with the hope that participants would prefer the picture that best fits their gender. We did not find statistical significance, F(2,58)=2.126, p=.129(p<.05), in that the participants discovered more differences in their preferred picture. However, we did find statistical significance between picture type and number correct, and the order the pictures were given and the number correct in each picture.

Storm Response And Water Balance Of Temperate Rainforest Karst Watersheds: Tongass National Forest, Alaska, Johanna Kovarik May 2007

Storm Response And Water Balance Of Temperate Rainforest Karst Watersheds: Tongass National Forest, Alaska, Johanna Kovarik

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska contains 2,176 square kilometers of karst. As part of the evolving Tongass Land Management Plan, research into the function of karst systems is crucial in understanding how forest management affects not only karst areas but also surrounding ecosystems. Dye trace and water balance results in two watersheds on the north end of Prince of Wales Island demonstrate the difficulty in containing the effects of management, as water can enter karst catchments from unknown sources at different flow regimes. A dye trace was conducted in Windgate and Canyon Block watersheds. Two sinking streams were …

Residual Nutrient Removal By A Winter Cover Crop From Broiler Litter Amended Soils, Jennifer Johnson May 2007

Residual Nutrient Removal By A Winter Cover Crop From Broiler Litter Amended Soils, Jennifer Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Poultry production throughout Southern Kentucky is becoming a major agricultural enterprise. Rapid spread of the industry has led to many agricultural advances as well as concerns. One primary concerns is the possible nutrient build-up in pasture and cropland as a result of broiler litter application. Studies were conducted at Western Kentucky University using sorghum sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) as a forage to possibly remove excess nutrients. This project led to a consideration of using a cover crop to further remove nutrients from broiler litter amended soils. This study's objective was to assess total nutrient removal by sorghum sudangrass followed …

Agricultural Contaminant Source And Transport In A Karst Groundwater Basin, Patricia Kambesis May 2007

Agricultural Contaminant Source And Transport In A Karst Groundwater Basin, Patricia Kambesis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Agricultural land use in areas that are located in karst groundwater basins negatively impact groundwater quality because karst terrains provide multiple, direct hydrologic connections from the surface into karst aquifers. The connections and rapid velocities associated with surface and subsurface flow in karst aquifers allow for contaminants to move quickly into and through a groundwater basin. When groundwater returns to the surface via a spring or springs, any contaminants within the water become part of surface streams and rivers. These in turn, impact water quality in areas located downstream of the spring or springs. The purpose of this study was …

Children's Use Of Race In Drawing Inferences Based On Their Understanding Of Race Constancy, Casey A. Dawson May 2007

Children's Use Of Race In Drawing Inferences Based On Their Understanding Of Race Constancy, Casey A. Dawson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Children’s understanding of race constancy and their subsequent use of race as a means of drawing inductive inferences were investigated. Race constancy was determined by children’s tendency to say that people could change category membership by changing their outside appearance. A second phase of the study measured how many race-based inferences children made relative to other social categories such as age or sex. The results indicated that children who had a better understanding of race constancy were also more likely to use race as a means of drawing inductive inferences. These findings support a developmental progression of race constancy and …

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Observed Soil Moisture From Nebraska, Ashley Littell May 2007

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Observed Soil Moisture From Nebraska, Ashley Littell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Soil moisture is a measure of the water content in a soil that is dependent upon precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff, drainage, and irrigation. Nebraska is one of the few states that measures soil moisture in an extensive network that records weather variables on a daily basis. Daily soil moisture observations are collected from depths of 10, 25, 50, and 100 centimeters and analyzed in this research. Data from these stations are evaluated on the spatial and temporal scales using spatial interpolations, time-series analysis, and cross-correlations to better understand the variations of soil moisture in the Northern Great Plains. Spatial interpolation grids …

Relationships Of Body Condition, Blood Glucose And Insulin Concentration Of Grazing Horses, Ashley Montfort May 2007

Relationships Of Body Condition, Blood Glucose And Insulin Concentration Of Grazing Horses, Ashley Montfort

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A recent study has reported that blood glucose levels and founder in horses consuming forage/concentrate mixed diets are positively correlated (Pass et al., 1998). Other studies have reported body fat and insulin resistance are also positively correlated in horses and humans (Hoffman et al., 2003; Boshell et al., 1968; DeFonzo et al, 1991; Kahn et al., 2000). Few studies have monitored these relationships in horses consuming forage only diets, even though the incidence of grass founder is quite high in obese horses and ponies Four thin, four moderate, and four obese horses were grouped two mares and two geldings per …

Freedom To Explore: Using The Eleventh Amendment To Liberate Researchers At State Universities From Liability For Intellectual Property Infringements, Gary Pulsinelli May 2007

Freedom To Explore: Using The Eleventh Amendment To Liberate Researchers At State Universities From Liability For Intellectual Property Infringements, Gary Pulsinelli

Scholarly Works

In its 1999 decision in Florida Prepaid Postsecondary Education Expense Board v. College Savings Bank, the Supreme Court held that the Eleventh Amendment protected states from suit for patent infringement, effectively making state universities immune from intellectual property suits. This Article analyzes how the Florida Prepaid decision affects researchers at state universities, and how those researchers may avoid liability under existing law. It first concludes that researchers at state universities might still be subject to injunctions against future infringement. The Article next observes that individual researchers at state universities might also face personal liability for damages, but then suggests that …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella quintana is a fastidious, gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that causes prolonged bacteremia in immunocompetent humans and severe infections in immunocompromised individuals. We sought to define the outer membrane subproteome of B. quintana in order to obtain insight into the biology and pathogenesis of this emerging pathogen and to identify the predominant B. quintana antigens targeted by the human immune system during infection. We isolated the total membrane proteins of B. quintana and identified 60 proteins by two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and peptide mass fingerprinting. Using the newly constructed proteome map, we then utilized two-dimensional immunoblotting with sera from …

Conservation Studies Of Insect Cave Faunas In Mammoth Cave National Park And Ghana, West Africa, Chris Dewildt May 2007

Conservation Studies Of Insect Cave Faunas In Mammoth Cave National Park And Ghana, West Africa, Chris Dewildt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As part of a long term ecological monitoring effort at Mammoth Cave National Park, a blind cave beetle, Neaphaenops tellkampfi, was collected and data on populations trends gathered from September 2005 through December 2006 in Great Onyx Cave. The sex and age of each individual in each of 15 sites were determined and density trends of the entire population was measured. The species was chosen due to its role as an indicator species, since potential anthropogenic threats to the environment can be detected via population response. This was the initial implementation of a new monitoring method and a test of …

Biochemical And Functional Characterization Of The Tapasin/Erp57 Conjugate, David Ryan Peaper May 2007

Biochemical And Functional Characterization Of The Tapasin/Erp57 Conjugate, David Ryan Peaper

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Recognition of MHC class I/peptide complexes is required for the generation of CD8+ T cell responses. Peptide loading onto MHC class I/beta2m dimers occurs in the ER and involves both specific proteins and cellular chaperones. Tapasin is essential for peptide loading onto most MHC class I alleles, and it forms a mixed disulfide with the glycoprotein specific oxidoreductase ERp57. I have characterized the biochemical requirements for tapasin/ERp57 conjugate formation and addressed potential functions for ERp57 in peptide loading. Tapasin specifically recruits ERp57 into a mixed disulfide at the expense of free ERp57 in the ER. Other components of the MHC …

Clonogenicity Of Human Promyelocytic Leukemia Cells Enlarged And Multinucleated By Treatment With Cytochalasin B And Their Potential As Targets For Improved Chemical And Physical Therapeutic Approaches, Shannon Dubois May 2007

Clonogenicity Of Human Promyelocytic Leukemia Cells Enlarged And Multinucleated By Treatment With Cytochalasin B And Their Potential As Targets For Improved Chemical And Physical Therapeutic Approaches, Shannon Dubois

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Cytochalasin B (CB) is a pharmacological agent produced by fungi that disrupts the actin microfilament cytoskeleton and inhibits cytokinesis. It interferes with the formation of the contractile ring and with the development of the cleavage furrow, thus preventing cell division. When normal cells are treated with CB, cell cycle arrest occurs. However, when neoplastic cells are treated with CB, the cells continue to enter the cell cycle and to make new nuclei, but since cytokinesis cannot occur, the neoplastic cells become enlarged and multinucleated. Our lab proposes that enlarged multinucleated neoplastic cells might be more susceptible to agents damaging DNA …

Re Use Ful, Aaron P. Tvrdy May 2007

Re Use Ful, Aaron P. Tvrdy

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

My terminal project is an exploration of reusing materials, developed in prototype and implemented into a practical scenario as part of an effort to limit waste in our society.

Limit the amount of waste we produce by reusing materials rather than discarding them.

I believe that the amount of waste we produce is a serious issue that must be addressed through creative reuses instead of larger landfills. I will utilize reused materials to create architectural components that can be adapted and inserted into any design solution. If we can gather materials in bulk that typically get discarded as waste, we …

Rancho Siloe’ | Instituto Misionero Transcultural, Jeff H. Davis May 2007

Rancho Siloe’ | Instituto Misionero Transcultural, Jeff H. Davis

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

“Rancho Siloe’,” as called by the missionaries of New Tribes Mission-Mexico, is a missionary training school named for its place, Siloe’: a 19 acre piece of ranch land North of Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Still in its infancy with only 15 students, the current school is a composition of need based additions created over the time of its existence. Its future student population and rate of growth are unknown.

As a non-profit Christian mission organization, NTM-Mexico relies on donations and voluntary labor to sustain Rancho Siloe’s construction. Some of these volunteers bring with them professional experience, while others are often …
