Regulation Of Nuclear Respiratory Factor-1 Expression By 17beta-Estradiol : A New Mechanism For Coordinating Mitochondrial Gene Expression., Kathleen Annmarie Mattingly 1979- May 2007

Regulation Of Nuclear Respiratory Factor-1 Expression By 17beta-Estradiol : A New Mechanism For Coordinating Mitochondrial Gene Expression., Kathleen Annmarie Mattingly 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mechanisms by which estrogens regulate mitochondrial activity are not completely understood. Chronic treatment of ovariectomized rats with estradiol (E 2 ) increased the amount of Nuclear Respiratory Factor-1 (NRF-1) protein in cerebral blood vessels. NRF-1 is a transcription factor that regulates the expression of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes including mitochondrial transcription factor A ( TFAM , which, in turn, controls transcription of the mitochondrial genome. Here, I tested the hypothesis that E 2 increases NRF-1 transcription through a genomic activation of estrogen receptor (ER) resulting in a coordinate increase in nuclear- and mitochondrial- encoded genes, mitochondrial respiratory activity, and mitochondrial …

Participation Of Mouse Dna Polymerases Iota, Eta, And Rev1 In Translesion Synthesis Of Carcinogen Induced Dna Adducts And Carcinogenesis., Chad Aaron Dumstorf 1977- May 2007

Participation Of Mouse Dna Polymerases Iota, Eta, And Rev1 In Translesion Synthesis Of Carcinogen Induced Dna Adducts And Carcinogenesis., Chad Aaron Dumstorf 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis indicate that most mutations are dependent on the activity of translesion synthesis DNA polymerases. The impact of reducing the level of these polymerases on mutagenesis and carcinogenesis in mouse models is poorly defined. Using knock out strategies we were able to remove polymerase eta (pol ç), and polymerase iota (pol é) and pol eta/pol iota from the mouse and lower REV1 in the mouse lung. This dissertation reports the changes in UV-induced carcinogenesis and mutagenesis that were observed. Mutagenesis data in pol iota deficient cells clearly indicate pol iota as a …

An Exploration Of Defensive Pessimism, Explanatory Style, And Expectations In Relation To The Academic Performance Of College And University Students., Scott Richard Berry May 2007

An Exploration Of Defensive Pessimism, Explanatory Style, And Expectations In Relation To The Academic Performance Of College And University Students., Scott Richard Berry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have studied the concepts of optimism and pessimism as traits, expectations, strategies, and styles of explaining outcomes. Explanatory style and the strategy of defensive pessimism are two of these areas. In general, optimistic explanatory style has been associated with better outcomes including academic performance. Some studies have found that pessimistic explanatory style has been associated with better academic outcomes. One suggestion in the literature was that defensive pessimism might explain the cases where pessimistic explanatory style is associated with better academic outcomes. To evaluate this explanation, the Academic Attributional Style Questionnaire (AASQ, Revised Defensive Pessimism Questionnaire (DPQ), and Brief …

Zen In The Craft Of Acting., Patti Lynn Heying 1962- May 2007

Zen In The Craft Of Acting., Patti Lynn Heying 1962-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In fulfillment of the thesis project requirement for the Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Louisville, I portrayed the role of Paulina in William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. The production was directed by Dennis Krausnick, co-founder of Shakespeare and Company in Lennox, Massachusetts. This document explores the nature of zen in acting: a euphoric, heightened state of awareness sometimes achieved during a performance. I will examine how the rehearsal process for this particular play prepared the cast to better achieve moments of zen. I will also describe how to apply these same tactics to other plays in …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Maternal And Cord Blood Plasma., Paula G. Radmacher 1951- May 2007

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Maternal And Cord Blood Plasma., Paula G. Radmacher 1951-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are chemicals generated from the incomplete combustion of organic materials, including tobacco smoke. Some PAH are known to be mutagenic and carcinogenic in humans, and of concern for the fetus when women smoke during pregnancy. Known consequences of smoking during pregnancy include low birth weight and preterm delivery. It is unknown if PAH are related to these outcomes. This pilot study was designed to measure concentrations of 3 PAH (anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene and 1-hydroxypyrene) in paired maternal and cord blood samples as well as any correlations between the two matrices. Plasma cotinine was used as a biomarker …

Transnational Advocacy Networks In The International System : Lessons From Ecuador., Isabella Marie Christensen 1977- May 2007

Transnational Advocacy Networks In The International System : Lessons From Ecuador., Isabella Marie Christensen 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transnational advocacy campaign against Ecuador's second oil-transporting pipeline, the Oleoducto de Crudo Pesado, had no impact on that state's endorsement of the project and only a negligible effect on related social and environmental policies. This outcome is at odds with the theoretical formulation advanced by Keck and Sikkink which holds that certain transnational advocacy campaigns can act as agents of state-level policy changes. While Keck and Sikkink locate causal variables of campaign outcome on the levels of the campaign and the state, the Oleoducto de Crudo Pesado case signals the need to further incorporate international-level analysis and to investigate …

Violence And Horror : The Anti-Technology Of Subjectivity., Christopher William Curry 1973- May 2007

Violence And Horror : The Anti-Technology Of Subjectivity., Christopher William Curry 1973-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is about graphic representations of violence and subjectivity. Simply stated, the violence in many recent horror films is motivated by a nihilism resulting from frustration with the inadequacy of contemporary subjectivity. I want to explore the potential such representations have for providing a means of radically undermining the contemporary category of subjectivity. This subversion is due to what I call the inverted mirror stage effect in combination with a particular dislocation of the audience that is associated with the spectacle of violence displayed in contemporary, or postmodern, horror films. My theoretical approach is a cultural materialist psychoanalytic one …

This study examines the effects of the complexion of African American children in television commercials on the self-perception of African American children. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. A total of 347 commercials were examined from Saturday morning television programming on broadcast stations in the Lynchburg, Virginia area during March 2007. The results of the quantitative analysis found a lack of darker complexion African American females in the pre-recorded commercials. A qualitative analysis was conducted with focus groups of African American children ages 6-10 who were asked questions after viewing 8 to 10 of the pre-recorded commercials from the …

Regulatory Marketing Approval For Pharmaceuticals As A Non-Tariff Barrier To Trade: Analysis Under The Wto's Agreement On Technical Barriers To Trade, Mary Hess Eliason May 2007

Regulatory Marketing Approval For Pharmaceuticals As A Non-Tariff Barrier To Trade: Analysis Under The Wto's Agreement On Technical Barriers To Trade, Mary Hess Eliason

San Diego International Law Journal

At a fundamental level, pharmaceuticals serve two roles: both as a cure for disease and as a product. As a cure for disease, a drug's value cannot be quantified because it saves lives. As a product, profit analysis shapes every step of a drug's progression to market. In least developed nations the barriers to drug access are not solely economic. National regulatory systems for market approval are being used to prevent external pharmaceutical manufacturers from participating in a national market. This article will address how the regulatory framework of pharmaceutical registration may serve as a barrier to trade in drugs, …

The Social And Civic Impacts Of Robert Winship Woodruff In The City Of Atlanta During The 1960s, Andrew Land

All Theses

Robert Winship Woodruff was born December 6, 1889, and died March 7, 1985. For more than sixty-two years he headed the Coca-Cola Company, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Woodruff amassed a tremendous fortune and was for years the richest man in Georgia and one of the wealthiest in the South. His wealth made him extremely powerful in political circles, and he came to dominate the city of Atlanta in a way unlike any other private citizen in any other comparable American city of the time. Though he never held elected or appointed political office, Woodruff controlled all major policy decisions made …

Extinction Of Experience, Eileen Powell May 2007

Extinction Of Experience, Eileen Powell

All Theses

Three interrelated themes--beauty, control, and loss of nature--emerge as integral to my artistic examination of humanity's relationship to the web of life. My sculptures explore ideas of control, memory, and loss by contrasting organic ceramic forms that characterize nature with manmade materials such as ropes, chains, nets, or monofilament that represent the control humans exert over nature. All my sculptural forms are bound, wrapped, entangled, or in some way struggling against a physical force of great size and scale that symbolizes humans' domination over nature. My work seeks to reveal the emotion of loss by enlightening the viewer to the …

Marine Heritage Monitoring With High Resolution Survey Tools: Scapamap 2001-2006, Brian R. Calder, Bobby Forbes, Duncan Mallace May 2007

Marine Heritage Monitoring With High Resolution Survey Tools: Scapamap 2001-2006, Brian R. Calder, Bobby Forbes, Duncan Mallace

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Archaeologically, marine sites can be just as significant as those on land. Until recently, however, they were not protected in the UK to the same degree, leading to degradation of sites; the difficulty of investigating such sites still makes it problematic and expensive to properly describe, schedule and monitor them. Use of conventional high-resolution survey tools in an archaeological context is changing the economic structure of such investigations however, and it is now possible to remotely but routinely monitor the state of submerged cultural artifacts. Use of such data to optimize expenditure of expensive and rare assets (e.g., divers and …

Comparing The Melanin-Concentrating Hormone -1 Receptor Expression In The Brains Of Mice And Rats, Sidney Clayborn Williams May 2007

Comparing The Melanin-Concentrating Hormone -1 Receptor Expression In The Brains Of Mice And Rats, Sidney Clayborn Williams

Biology Theses - Archive

The melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) family of neuropeptides is believed to be important in controlling certain feeding behaviors. Recently, the distribution of melanin-concentrating-1 receptor (MCH-1R) in rat brains was published revealing that it is expressed throughout the rat brain. Mice lacking MCH and MCH-1R have been generated and have been found to be leaner and hyperactive. Consequently, MCH-1R has become a possible site for pharmacologically controlling obesity. However, areas expressing MCH-1R in the mouse brain still remain unknown. Therefore, in situ hybridization was performed on both mouse and rat brains to compare the MCH-1R expression between these animals. This comparison study …

Factors Influencing Dispersal And Population Structure Of Phoretic Mites In Centropogon Solanifolius (Campanulaceae) And Columnea Spp. (Gesneriaceae), May 2007, Emily Davis

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Phoretic hummingbird flower mites of the genus Rhinoseius are nectar thieves of Centropogon solanifolius (Campanulaceae) and Columnea spp. (Gesneriaceae) at Monteverde. Dispersal by phoresy is a rare and risky, but nonetheless critical, event in the lives of hummingbird mites (Colwell and Naeem 1994). This study investigates factors that influence phoretic dispersal by R. colwelli (Mesostigmata: Ascidae), by comparing dispersal from C. solanifolius and Columnea spp. Additionally, this study explores the relationships between mite population size and structure in the two plant species. Flower age, mite population density, sex ratio, and nectar availability were considered as possible influences on dispersal and …

Wing Color And Mating Preferences Of Heliconius Sara, May 2007, Emily Loew May 2007

Wing Color And Mating Preferences Of Heliconius Sara, May 2007, Emily Loew

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Convergence in aposematic coloration of chemically-protected butterflies, or Müllerian Mimicry, improves advertisement of unpalatability to predators. Heliconius sara (Heliconiinae) has two races in Costa Rica, each matching a different Müllerian model, one with and the other without a yellow stripe on the bottom edge of the hindwing. Color switching in Heliconius spp. is common but may involve a conflict between natural selection for convergence to models and sexual selection for maintenance of the original color pattern. Here, I manipulate the color pattern of H. sara to determine the degree to which sexual selection constrains color pattern switching. This study was …

Precipitation Variation And Its Effects On The Reproductive Success And Survival Of Lepanthes Jimenezii (Orchidaceae), May 2007, Katherine Mccall May 2007

Precipitation Variation And Its Effects On The Reproductive Success And Survival Of Lepanthes Jimenezii (Orchidaceae), May 2007, Katherine Mccall

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Tropical cloud forests like that found in Monteverde, Costa Rica rely heavily on daily precipitation in the form of mist during the misty-windy and dry seasons. Studies have shown that this mist is occurring less frequently due to climate change (Pounds et al. 1999). This field study examines the effects of increased precipitation frequency, to mimic that found in the 1970s, on a specific member of the Orchidaceae family, Lepanthes jimenezii (Pounds et al. 1999). Additionally it compares such effects with those that L. jimenezii experiences in current conditions and those that may occur in the future. I divided a …

[Re]Considering The Refugee Camp, Matthew C. Stoub May 2007

[Re]Considering The Refugee Camp, Matthew C. Stoub

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Abstract:

Conflict and disaster occurs throughout the world every day. The aftershock of these situations gives rise to millions of stateless persons: refugees. Today, the Camp is virtually synonymous with refugee situations. These institutional establishments are intended as a transitory center for sustaining life until the inhabitants can safely Return home. The tangible reality of these situations is that they become permanent fixtures in the landscape. The current system of warehousing refugees in overpopulated wastelands creates a strong dependence for the victim upon humanitarian aid. The camp is seen as unwanted, parasitic, and as a necessary evil.

Utilizing a diagrammatical …

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements May 2007

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements

All Theses

Characterization of the IBC Advanced Technologies SuperLig¨ 620 solid phase extraction resin was performed in order to develop an automated strontium-90 process monitor. The main focus was on strontium separation from barium, with the goal of developing an automated separation process for strontium-90 in Hanford high-level tank wastes. High-level waste tanks contain significant cesium-137 activities, of which barium daughters are of great concern as interferences to strontium quantification. A number of complexants were studied in a series of batch distribution coefficient experiments, as SuperLig¨ 620 was not previously known to elute strontium in typical mineral acids. The optimal separation was …

Influence Of Supramammary Lymph Node Extract On Cell Growth In Vitro, Danelle Duffy May 2007

Influence Of Supramammary Lymph Node Extract On Cell Growth In Vitro, Danelle Duffy

All Theses

ABSTRACT The bovine supramammary lymph node, located on the dorso-caudal surface of the udder, is a protein rich organ that is discarded on a regular basis during slaughter. Experiments were conducted to evaluate whether or not the lymph node extract could be used as a substitute for bovine growth serum in cell media. Two different preparations of lymph node extract were made and tested. Three different cell lines (MDA-MB-435, MAC-T, and 1C6) were used in assays to evaluate the lymph node extract as a supplement. The first extract yielded a protein concentration of 3.0 mg/ml (heat inactivated) and the second …

Alabama shad demonstrated a positive correlation of length to fecundity, with fecundity estimates ranging from …

Evaluation Of Different Contra-Flow Strategies For Hurricane Evacuation In Charleston, South Carolina, Liz Stephen May 2007

Evaluation Of Different Contra-Flow Strategies For Hurricane Evacuation In Charleston, South Carolina, Liz Stephen

All Theses

The number of category four and five hurricanes has nearly doubled over the past decade. Charleston, the second most populous city in South Carolina, is located on a very low peninsula, making it susceptible to floods during hurricanes and storm surges. In the event of a hurricane, the population at-risk must be evacuated to safety as quickly as possible. The Interstate system is the primary mode to evacuate at-risk population out of Charleston. Effective traffic management strategies are needed to manage the significant increase in demand on highways during the evacuation and contra-flowing traffic has been applied as a strategy …
