Indignation: Psychology, Politics, Law, Daniel Kahneman
Indignation: Psychology, Politics, Law, Daniel Kahneman
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Moral intuitions operate in much the same way as other intuitions do; what makes the moral domain is distinctive is its foundations in the emotions, beliefs, and response tendencies that define indignation. The intuitive system of cognition, System I, is typically responsible for indignation; the more reflective system, System II, may or may not provide an override. Moral dumbfounding and moral numbness are often a product of moral intuitions that people are unable to justify. An understanding of indignation helps to explain the operation of the many phenomena of interest to law and politics: the outrage heuristic, the centrality of …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Animal Detritus On Growth, Survival, And Mass Of Invasive Container Mosquito Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae, Donald A. Yee, Banugopan Kesavaraju, Steven A. Juliano
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Compared with plant detritus, animal detritus yields higher growth rates, survival, adult mass, and population growth of container-dwelling mosquitoes. It is unclear whether the benefit from animal detritus to larvae results from greater microorganism growth, direct ingestion of animal detritus by larvae, or some other mechanism. We tested alternative mechanisms by which animal detritus may benefit the invasive container-dwelling mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae). In the laboratory, larvae were reared under three conditions with access to 1) detritus, but where microorganisms in the water column were reduced through periodic flushing; 2) water column microorganisms, but larvae had no direct …
A Multi-Scale Examination Of Stopover Habitat Use By Birds, Jeffrey J. Buler, Frank R. Moore, Stefan Woltmann
A Multi-Scale Examination Of Stopover Habitat Use By Birds, Jeffrey J. Buler, Frank R. Moore, Stefan Woltmann
Faculty Publications
Most of our understanding of habitat use by migrating land birds comes from studies conducted at single, small spatial scales, which may overemphasize the importance of intrinsic habitat factors, such as food availability, in shaping migrant distributions. We believe that a multi-scale approach is essential to assess the influence of factors that control en route habitat use. We determined the relative importance of eight variables, each operating at a habitat-patch, landscape, or regional spatial scale, in explaining the differential use of hardwood forests by Nearctic-Neotropical land birds during migration. We estimated bird densities through transect surveys at sites near the …

Exploring Reflective Engagement That Promotes Understanding In College Classrooms, Franco Zengaro, Asghar Iran-Nejad
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This study investigated student engagement in class discussions in a university-level, literature-based writing class. The research questions were 1) Does multiple-source learning provide a new lens for the observation of reflective teaching and learning practices? 2) Is there evidence that shows that the practices adopted by one teacher actually relied on and fostered this kind of thinking among students, and if so, what were those practices? The participants were 22 university students and their instructor, chosen because of the instructor’s interest in improving class discussions. Data were collected over one semester through videotapes, formal and informal interviews, and class documents …

In-Service Teachers’ Knowledge Of Significant Global Events/Issues: Implications For Teacher Preparation Programs In Developing Countries, J.O. Ajiboye, Adeyinka Tella
Essays in Education
In this era of globalisation, it is imperative that teachers are adequately prepared to function effectively in a challenging global environment. The challenges of globalisation demands teachers who are competent, effective, and dynamic in their orientation. This paper presents a report of a study that examines the existing knowledge of in-service teachers in the University of Botswana, of some significant global issues/events. Five hundred in-service teachers were randomly selected from across 100-400 levels of study and across the three main teaching specializations: arts/humanities, sciences and social sciences. An instrument tagged ‘’Knowledge of Significant Global Events/Issues Test’’ with a reliability coefficient …

Essays in Education
Two faculty members walked to class on a Thursday evening. As they walked, they talked about the content of their respective courses. By the time the faculty members reached their classrooms, an action research project had evolved. The focus of the project wastwofold: 1) to increase the awareness of teacher education candidates of the responsibilities of classroom teachers and 2) to apply the research and/or theory the veteran teachers had acquired in their master’s culmination class. This article provides an overview of the events which developed as a result of the interactions between the practicing teachers and the pre-service teachers …
Maslovian Theory Of Human Needs: Implications For Adult Education Curriculum In Nigeria, Sydney Nwanakponna Osuji
Maslovian Theory Of Human Needs: Implications For Adult Education Curriculum In Nigeria, Sydney Nwanakponna Osuji
Essays in Education
The objective of this paper is to probe the relevance of the Maslovian theory of hierarchy of human needs to adult education curriculum in Nigeria. A historical sketch of adult education curriculum in the country revealed congruence between contents of programmes and students’ aspirations and vice versa. Therefore, to infest adult education curriculum in the country with the tenets of Maslow’s theory, there should be a survey to ascertain the needs and interests of different categories of adults; provision for different interests; efficient and effective delivery machinery including units for monitoring achievements; and above all, efficient professionals capable of affording …
Faculty Community Under Construction: A Case Study, Patricia E. Calderwood
Faculty Community Under Construction: A Case Study, Patricia E. Calderwood
Essays in Education
This case study describes some of the elements of the social construction of community by faculty involved with an innovative residential and academic subgroup at a small private university in the northeast US. Examples from the case study demonstrate that the social construction of faculty community can be accomplished through both routine and marked activities and events; that it is possible to build a resilient sense of community deliberately and overtly, inadvertently, and subtly, and that it is possible to respond to potential vulnerabilities in ways that build a resilient sense of community.

Maintenance of fluid homeostasis is critical to establishing and maintaining normal physiology. The landmark discovery of membrane water channels (aquaporins; AQPs) ushered in a new area in osmoregulatory biology that has drawn from and contributed to diverse branches of biology, from molecular biology and genomics to systems biology and evolution, and from microbial and plant biology to animal and translational physiology. As a result, the study of AQPs provides a unique and integrated backdrop for exploring the relationships between genes and genome systems, the regulation of gene expression, and the physiologic consequences of genetic variation. The wide species distribution of …

Background. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a critical cytokine in the immune response whose transcriptional activation is controlled by a proximal promoter region that is highly conserved in mammals and, in particular, primates. Specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) upstream of the proximal human TNF promoter have been identified, which are markers of human ancestry.
Methodology/Principal findings. Using a comparative genomics approach we show that certain fixed genetic differences in the TNF promoter serve as markers of primate speciation. We also demonstrate that distinct alleles of most human TNF promoter SNPs are identical to fixed nucleotides in primate TNF promoters. Furthermore, …

Tissue samples from 699 birds from three regions of Asia (Myanmar, India, and South Korea) were screened for evidence of infection by avian parasites in the genera Plasmodium and Haemoproteus. Samples were collected from November 1994 to October 2004. We identified 241 infected birds (34.0%). Base-on-sequence data for the cytochrome b gene from 221 positive samples, 34 distinct lineages of Plasmodium, and 41 of Haemoproteus were detected. Parasite diversity was highest in Myanmar followed by India and South Korea. Parasite prevalence differed among regions but not among host families. There were four lineages of Plasmodium and one of …
