Illusory Losses, Cass R. Sunstein
Illusory Losses, Cass R. Sunstein
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Recent empirical work demonstrates that people’s self-reported happiness is surprisingly resilient to many large changes in life conditions; apparently significant adverse events and conditions often inflict little or no hedonic damage. People with disabilities—such as those on dialysis, with lost limbs, or with colostomies—appear to show the same level of happiness or life-satisfaction as people without disabilities. The reason for these results is people’s power of adaptation. Adaptation has several sources, but it is often a product of attention: Most of the time, people go about their lives without attending to, or focusing on, adverse conditions, and hence those conditions …
The Public Trust In Surface Waterways And Submerged Lands Of The Great Lakes States, Bertram C. Frey, Andrew Mutz
The Public Trust In Surface Waterways And Submerged Lands Of The Great Lakes States, Bertram C. Frey, Andrew Mutz
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The modern public trust doctrine compels each Great Lakes state to protect the sustainable future of the Lakes and to preserve traditional public uses. At the same time, the doctrine constrains the states' powers to allow exploitation of trust resources. This Article provides a brief historical overview of the public trust doctrine in waterways and their submerged lands. It next explores how the eight Great Lakes states have applied the doctrine, discusses the surprising number of differences in the doctrine's development from state to state, and provides comparison charts. After analyzing the variety of approaches used by the eight states …

Indignation: Psychology, Politics, Law, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Moral intuitions operate in much the same way as other intuitions do; what makes the moral domain is distinctive is its foundations in the emotions, beliefs, and response tendencies that define indignation. The intuitive system of cognition, System I, is typically responsible for indignation; the more reflective system, System II, may or may not provide an override. Moral dumbfounding and moral numbness are often a product of moral intuitions that people are unable to justify. An understanding of indignation helps to explain the operation of the many phenomena of interest to law and politics: the outrage heuristic, the centrality of …

Report On The Follow-Up Assessment Into Operational Mine/Uxo Activities In Kosovo, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
In July-August 2006, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) conducted a mission to Kosovo at the request of the Office of the Kosovo Protection Corps Coordinator (OKPCC). The purpose of the mission was to assess concerns raised by the HALO Trust that the extent of the remaining landmine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination in Kosovo had been underestimated and, thus, provided an inadequate basis for future planning. The assessment team reviewed a sample of task dossiers, including all those identified as a concern by the HALO Trust. They found some problems with information management in the Explosive Ordnance …

Climate. Scrubbing The Sky: Climate Change And The Productive Center, Marcy Murninghan
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article sketches out the efforts of government, business, and civil society to address the problem of climate change. It identifies some of the key initiatives underway — including proposals for more stringent caps on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; the creation of a market-based trading system that provides incentives and profits for entities that reduce their GHG emission levels; more robust research and development of alternative energy sources as well as new approaches to traditional ones; and continued public education — and portrays the bipartisan, collaborative, multilateral nature of saving Mother Nature. While acknowledging that ultimately these efforts may be …

The Role Of Geographic Information Systems Inwildlife Epidemiology: Models Of Chronic Wasting Disease In Colorado Mule Deer, Matthew L. Farnsworth, Jennifer A. Hoeting, N. Thompson Hobbs, Mary M. Conner, Kenneth P. Burnham, Lisa L. Wolfe, Elizabeth S. Williams, David M. Theobald, Michael W. Miller
The Role Of Geographic Information Systems Inwildlife Epidemiology: Models Of Chronic Wasting Disease In Colorado Mule Deer, Matthew L. Farnsworth, Jennifer A. Hoeting, N. Thompson Hobbs, Mary M. Conner, Kenneth P. Burnham, Lisa L. Wolfe, Elizabeth S. Williams, David M. Theobald, Michael W. Miller
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
The authors present findings from two landscape epidemiology studies of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in northern Colorado mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). First, the effects of human land use on disease prevalence were explored by formulating a set of models estimating CWD prevalence in relation to differences in human land use, sex and geographic location. Prevalence was higher in developed areas and among male deer suggesting that anthropogenic influences (changes in land use), differences in exposure risk between sexes and landscape-scaled heterogeneity are associated with CWD prevalence. The second study focused on identifying scales of mule deer movement and mixing that …
Sensory Modulation Of Crustacean Non-Giant Tailflipping, Sandra Y. Espinoza, Zen Faulkes
Sensory Modulation Of Crustacean Non-Giant Tailflipping, Sandra Y. Espinoza, Zen Faulkes
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
As a first step in re-examining the modulation of non-giant tailflipping, we further investigate how the presence of weapons affects non-giant tailflipping. Removing both claws significantly changes the threshold for tailflipping (Krasne and Wine, 1975; Lang et al., 1977). Claw removal affects several variables at once, however; e.g., the animal’s mass; visual stimuli associated with having claws; tactile and proprioceptive cues. For example, a crayfish with claws that are present but useless might “bluff,” and may not tailflip away from a stimuli more than an intact animal.

Improvement And Evaluation Of Greenlip Abalone Hatchery And Nursery Production. Final Frdc Report - Project 2003/203, Sabine Daume
Fisheries Research Contract Reports
A range of experiments aimed at optimizing broodstock performance and nursery culture of greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) were undertaken in Western Australia. Factors investigated that can potentially influence broodstock performance were natal source (wild-caught or farm-grown) and broodstock diets (red algal diet or formulated diet varying in levels of an important fatty acid). Wild-caught broodstock, feeding mainly on a red seaweed diet, produced eggs with higher concentrations of an important fatty acid, arachidonic acid, whereas farm-grown broodstock, feeding on a commercial formulated diet, altered the concentration of fatty acids of the eggs. Feeding farm-grown broodstock natural diets like …

The Effect Of Iodine Prophylaxis On The Frequency Of Thyroiditis And Thyroid Tumors In Southwest, Iran, Mahmood Soveid, Ahmad Monabbati, Leyla Sooratchi, Sara Dahti
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the salt iodization program, which was initiated in 1989 on frequencies of thyroiditis and papillary carcinoma in Fars province of Iran, which was previously an iodine deficient area. METHODS: Four hundred and eighty-two thyroidectomy specimens belonging to the pre-iodization period from 1983 to 1988, and 466 post iodization specimens from 1998 to 2003 were re-examined for presence of lymphocytic infiltration and types of thyroid tumors. This study was carried out in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran. RESULTS: The frequency of lymphocytic infiltration in non-neoplastic specimens increased from 30-60.5% after salt iodization (p<0.001). Background of lymphocytic infiltration in neoplastic specimens also increased from 18.5-61% after iodine prophylaxis (p<0.001). The frequency of papillary carcinoma in neoplastic specimens increased from 15-43% (p=0.01) and that of follicular adenoma decreased from 69-32.5% (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Salt iodization is associated with an increased occurrence of histologic thyroiditis and papillary carcinoma.

The Impact Of Host Rock Geochemistry On Bacterial Community Structure In Oligotrophic Cave Environments, Hazel A. Barton, Nicholas M. Taylor, Michael P. Kreate
KIP Articles
Despite extremely starved conditions, caves contain surprisingly diverse microbial communities. Our research is geared toward understanding what ecosystems drivers are responsible for this high diversity. To asses the effect of rock fabric and mineralogy, we carried out a comparative geomicrobiology study within Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, USA. Samples were collected from two different geologic locations within the cave: WF1 in the Massive Member of the Capitan Formation and sF88 in the calcareous siltstones of the Yates Formation. We examined the organic content at each location using liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy and analyzed microbial community structure using molecular phylogenetic analyses. In …

Functional Analysis Of The Fructooligosaccharide Utilization Operon In Lactobacillus Paracasei 1195, Yong Jun Goh, Jong-Hwa Lee, Robert W. Hutkins
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The fosABCDXE operon encodes components of a putative fructose/mannose phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) and a β- fructosidase precursor (FosE) that are involved in the fructooligosaccharide (FOS) utilization pathway of Lactobacillus paracasei 1195. The presence of an N-terminal signal peptide sequence and a LPQAG cell wall anchor motif at the C-terminal region of the deduced FosE precursor amino acid sequence predicted that the enzyme is cell wall-associated, indicating that FOS may be hydrolyzed extracellularly. In this study, cell fractionation experiments demonstrated that the FOS hydrolysis activity was contained exclusively in the cell wall extract of L. paracasei previously grown on FOS. …

Chloroviruses Encode A Bifunctional Dcmp-Dctp Deaminase That Produces Two Key Intermediates In Dttp Formation, Yuanzheng Zhang, Frank Maley, Gladys F. Maley, Garry Duncan, David Dunigan, James L. Van Etten
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
The chlorovirus PBCV-1, like many large double-stranded DNA-containing viruses, contains several genes that encode putative proteins involved in nucleotide biosynthesis. This report describes the characterization of the PBCV-1 dCMP deaminase, which produces dUMP, a key intermediate in the synthesis of dTTP. As predicted, the recombinant protein has dCMP deaminase activity that is activated by dCTP and inhibited by dTTP. Unexpectedly, however, the viral enzyme also has dCTP deaminase activity, producing dUTP. Typically, these two reactions are catalyzed by proteins in separate enzyme classes; to our knowledge, this is the first example of a protein having both deaminase activities. Kinetic experiments …

Common Genome-Wide Patterns Of Transcript Accumulation Underlying The Wing Polyphenism And Polymorphism In The Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon Pisum), Jennifer A. Brisson, Gergory K. Davis, David L. Stern
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, exhibits several environmentally cued polyphenisms, in which discrete, alternative phenotypes are produced. At low-density, parthenogenetic females produce unwinged female progeny, but at high-density females produce progeny that develop with wings. These alternative phenotypes represent a solution to the competing demands of dispersal and reproduction. Males also develop as either winged or unwinged, but these alternatives are determined by a genetic polymorphism. Winged and unwinged males are morphologically less distinct from each other than winged and unwinged females, possibly because males experience fewer trade-offs between dispersal and reproduction. To assess whether shared physiological differences mirror …
