Experience Leads To Preference: Experienced Females Prefer Brush-Legged Males In A Population Of Syntopic Wolf Spiders, Eileen Hebets, Cor J. Vink
Eileen Hebets Publications
Sexual selection has long been recognized as a potential contributor to the divergence in reproductive characters that ultimately leads to speciation. Schizocosa ocreata and Schizocosa rovneri wolf spiders embody a classic example of species divergence resulting from such sexual selection, as they are reproductively isolated by courtship behavior alone. Here, we characterize a newly discovered population of wolf spiders in which brush-legged males (sensu S. ocreata) and non-ornamented males (sensu S. rovneri) are found syntopically. Mitochondrial sequence data (cytochrome oxidase subunit 1) indicate that the 2 male forms are not reciprocally monophyletic. We exposed subadult females from this …

Time Synchronization And System Support For Energy Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks, Oldrine George Lewis
Time Synchronization And System Support For Energy Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks, Oldrine George Lewis
Engineering
This thesis presents a design of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and the implementation of an original time synchronization algorithm. The complete system support for energy efficient WSNs was developed. The new time synchronization algorithm called Sliding Clock Synchronization employs a simple, yet very effective algorithm to compensate for static and dynamic drifts in the frequencies of crystal oscillators used in the WSN nodes. As power is a very scarce and critical resource in most WSN s, a tight synchronization algorithm can reduce power consumption thereby increasing the life of a WSN. An accurate and reliable synchronization algorithm also enables …
Relationships Between Brown Bears And Chum Salmon At Mcneil River, Alaska, Joshua Mcallister Peirce
Relationships Between Brown Bears And Chum Salmon At Mcneil River, Alaska, Joshua Mcallister Peirce
Biological Sciences
Since 1967, the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary (MRSGS) has been managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to 'provide permanent protection for brown bears'. Up to 144 bears have been identified in a summer at MRSGS, and 72 bears at once have been observed in the vicinity of McNeil Falls. In this study, 155 chum salmon were radio tagged as they entered McNeil River and monitored daily. In 2005 and 2006 bears killed 48% of pre-spawning tagged chum salmon and consumed 99% of all tagged chums below McNeil Falls where most of the run occurs. A retrospective …

Phosphorylation-Induced Conformational Switching Of Cpi-17 Produces A Potent Myosin Phosphatase Inhibitor, Masumi Eto, Toshio Kitazawa, Fumiko Matsuzawa, Sei-Ichi Aikawa, Jason A. Kirkbride, Noriyoshi Isozumi, Yumi Nishimura, David L. Brautigan, Shin-Ya Ohki
Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers
Phosphorylation of endogenous inhibitor proteins specific for type-1 Ser/Thr phosphatase (PP1) provides a mechanism for reciprocal coordination of kinase and phosphatase activities. Phosphorylation of Thr38 in the inhibitor protein CPI-17 transduces G-protein-mediated signaling into a > 1000-fold increase of inhibitory potency toward myosin phosphatase. We show here the solution NMR structure of phospho-T38-CPI-17 with r. m. s. d. of 0.36 ± 0.06 Å for the backbone secondary structure, which reveals how phosphorylation triggers a conformational change and exposes the PP1 inhibitory surface. This active conformation is stabilized by the formation of a hydrophobic core of intercalated side-chains, which is not formed …
Foxtail Barley (Hordeum Jubatum) Control With Propoxycarbazone-Sodium And Fluazifop-P-Butyl In Three Alaska Native Grass Species, Brian Earl Jackson
Foxtail Barley (Hordeum Jubatum) Control With Propoxycarbazone-Sodium And Fluazifop-P-Butyl In Three Alaska Native Grass Species, Brian Earl Jackson
Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences
Foxtail barley is one of the most detrimental weeds for the Alaska native grass seed industry. Its control is essential for improving seed production and stand longevity so producers can meet statewide seed demands. The objective of this study was to determine suitable chemical controls of foxtail barley for three different native grass species: 'Nortran' tufted hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa L.), 'Gruening' alpine bluegrass (Poa alpina L.), and 'Wainwright' slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycalus L.) formerly (Agropyron pauciflorum L.). Field and greenhouse experiments were performed to identify selectivity between two herbicide compounds and the crops studied. Foxtail barley was extremely sensitive to …
Adrenal Responsiveness Of Black-Legged Kittiwake Chicks (Rissa Tridactyla): Interannual Variation And The Effects Of Nestling Status, Brood Size And Investigator Disturbance, John H. Brewer
Marine Biology
The adrenal response to stress in birds is characterized by the release of the hormone corticosterone. Measurement of corticosterone of individuals is increasingly being promoted as a means to gauge the effects of environmental change or human disturbance on populations. However, species respond differently to stressors based upon their natural history, individual life history stage and the context of the stressor; thus, the collection of baseline data from individuals in their natural environment has been advocated. We measured baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels of 12-15 day-old black-legged kittiwake (BLKI) chicks from 2002-2005 in Chiniak Bay, Alaska. The goals of the …

Zooplankton Abundance, Community Structure, And Oceanography Northeast Of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Xian Wang
Marine Biology
Zooplankton community dynamics and correlations with physical characteristics of the water were studied in the northwestern Gulf of Alaska. Zooplankton were collected systematically northeast of Kodiak Island, Alaska in March, May, August and November of 2002 to 2004. Species composition, total abundance and spatial community structure were correlated to physical variables. Small copepods (numerically>50%) dominated the zooplankton composition and were most abundant in August. Average biomass was 48.7 g WW m⁻² in May and 52.0 g WW m⁻² in August in Kodiak region. Interannual zooplankton abundance variations were large, with May 2003 having a dramatically higher abundance (2x10⁴ individual …
Headwater Stream Invertebrate Communities: A Comparison Across Ecoregions And Logging Histories, R. Bruce Medhurst
Headwater Stream Invertebrate Communities: A Comparison Across Ecoregions And Logging Histories, R. Bruce Medhurst
Biological Sciences
Monitoring stream condition is not always conducted with understanding how climate may influence anthropogenic disturbances. Stream monitoring has traditionally been accomplished through sampling benthic invertebrates, while sampling drifting invertebrates as a potential monitoring tool has received little attention, in spite of drift often being easier and less expensive to sample. The objectives of this study were to understand how logging influences headwater stream invertebrate communities (benthic and drift) across two ecoregions in the Cascade Range, central Washington, and to determine whether drift samples might serve as a replacement for benthic samples in assessing headwater stream condition. Benthic and drifting invertebrates …
Breeding Ecology And Fasting Tolerance Of Scaup And Other Ducks In The Boreal Forest Of Alaska, Kate H. Martin
Breeding Ecology And Fasting Tolerance Of Scaup And Other Ducks In The Boreal Forest Of Alaska, Kate H. Martin
Biological Sciences
Information on the breeding ecology of boreal forest ducks is lacking, despite management concern for species such as the lesser scaup (Aythya affinis), whose population has declined markedly since the 1980s. The mechanisms impacting population growth of scaup, and which component of their population dynamics is most affected, are unknown. Previous investigators hypothesized that food deprivation in the spring may reduce breeding success. My objectives were to: 1) examine reproductive parameters of lesser scaup and other ducks on the Yukon Flats in interior Alaska, and 2) measure the tolerance of captive scaup to fasting, in comparison to sympatric Northern shovelers …
The Ecology Of Vertebrate Pests And Integrated Pest Management (Ipm), Gary W. Witmer
The Ecology Of Vertebrate Pests And Integrated Pest Management (Ipm), Gary W. Witmer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Across the world, vertebrates cause considerable annual damage to agriculture, property, human health and safety, and natural resources. Although some species of all vertebrate groups have been implicated in damage, the species most often involved in serious amounts of damage are birds and mammals. Agroecosystems have provided many new opportunities for vertebrates to exploit, resulting in their becoming serious "pests" with humans taking various steps to protect their agricultural resources. This conflict has intensified as the human population has increased, efforts to get more production out of traditional croplands have intensified, and marginal lands have been placed into crop production. …
Mouse Circadian Plasma Leptin And Active Ghrelin Rhythms Under Ad Libitum And Scheduled Feeding, Haiting Wan
Mouse Circadian Plasma Leptin And Active Ghrelin Rhythms Under Ad Libitum And Scheduled Feeding, Haiting Wan
Biological Sciences
Light is the strongest timing cue for the circadian system, but non-photic cues can also entrain the master circadian clock, i.e., suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). In one of our mouse line (ENTR), all mice entrain to scheduled feeding, while in another (NON-ENTR) only 4 % entrain. In order to explore key physiological pathways involved in that process, I quantified the circadian rhythms of plasma leptin and active ghrelin of these two lines of mice under a 12:12 hour light-dark cycle with ad libitum feeding and six hours of food availability during the light period. Plasma active ghrelin induced opposite circadian rhythms …
Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers
Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers
Biological Sciences
We examined the role of scale and sex in habitat selection by radiocollared Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) on the Yakutat forelands, Alaska, USA. We used conditional logistic regression to quantify differences in habitats selected between sexes and seasons at 3 different spatial scales (250, 500, and 1000 m), and multi-response permutation procedure (MRPP) to test for differences in spatial distribution between the sexes. Sexes selected for habitats similarly during the mating season, when sexes generally were aggregated, whereas sexes exhibited differential habitat selection during the non-mating season when sexes were segregated. Both sexes selected habitats at the 1000 m …

Fish Bacterial Flora Identification Via Rapid Cellular Fatty Acid Analysis, Amit Morey
Fish Bacterial Flora Identification Via Rapid Cellular Fatty Acid Analysis, Amit Morey
Fisheries
Seafood quality can be assessed by determining the bacterial load and flora composition, although classical taxonomic methods are time-consuming and subjective to interpretation bias. A two-prong approach was used to assess a commercially available microbial identification system: confirmation of known cultures and fish spoilage experiments to isolate unknowns for identification. Bacterial isolates from the Fishery Industrial Technology Center Culture Collection (FITCCC) and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) were used to test the identification ability of the Sherlock Microbial Identification System (MIS). Twelve ATCC and 21 FITCCC strains were identified to species with the exception of Pseudomonas fluorescens and P. …

Autonomous Distributed Lqr/Apf Control Algorithm For Multiple Small Spacecraft During Simultaneous Close Proximity Operations , Shawn Mccamish, Marcello Romano, Xiaoping Yun
Small Satellite Conference
An autonomous distributed LQR/APF control algorithm for multiple small spacecraft during simultaneous close proximity operations has been developed. This research contributes to the control of multiple small spacecraft for emerging operation, which may include inspection, assembly, or servicing. A control algorithm is proposed which combines the control effort efficiency of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and the robust collision avoidance capability of the Artificial Potential Function (APF) methods. The LQR control effort serves as the attractive force toward goal positions, while APF-based repulsive functions provide collision avoidance for both fixed and moving obstacles. Refinement of both the APF and LQR …

Manifestations Of Nature, Bethany Krull
Manifestations Of Nature, Bethany Krull
Theses
I feel that humans in today’s society are distanced so much from their origins that we need to be reminded that our roots are deeply and firmly planted in the natural world. I feel that it is our society’s current disconnection and alienation from nature that is a key reason we have let the destruction of the environment go on for so long. This thesis consists of two parts. The first being a written investigation of the root causes of our society’s current alienation from nature and the second being a written account of the exhibition of a body of …
Particle Shape As Revealed By Spectral Depolarization, Donald D. Duncan, Michael Eugene Thomas
Particle Shape As Revealed By Spectral Depolarization, Donald D. Duncan, Michael Eugene Thomas
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Through a series of numerical simulations we explore some scatter effects due to nonspherical particles. Specifically, we examine the link between the aspect ratio of randomly oriented, prolate spheroidal particles and the resulting linear depolarization of the scattered light in the forward and backscatter directions. The particular objective is to detect the presence of randomly oriented particles that have a systematic size and aspect ratio. Calculations show that the spectral behavior of the linear depolarization reveals the aspect ratio of the scattering particles. The concept is demonstrated using the size, shape, and refractive index of the spore form of Bacillus …

Force-Response Considerations In Ciliary Mechanosensation, Andrew Resnick, Ulrich Hopfer
Force-Response Considerations In Ciliary Mechanosensation, Andrew Resnick, Ulrich Hopfer
Physics Faculty Publications
Considerable experimental evidence indicates that the primary, nonmotile cilium is a mechanosensory organelle in several epithelial cell types. As the relationship between cellular responses and nature and magnitude of applied forces is not well understood, we have investigated the effects of exposure of monolayers of renal collecting duct chief cells to orbital shaking and quantified the forces incident on cilia. An exposure of 24 h of these cells to orbital shaking resulted in a decrease of amiloride-sensitive sodium current by ∼60% and ciliary length by ∼30%. The sensitivity of the sodium current to shaking was dependent on intact cilia. The …
