ETHOS Technical Reports
La Chinantla, located in the Uxpanapa Valley of southern Mexico, is a tropical farming village home to roughly 4,000 people. The Uxpanapa Valley is positioned in the middle of the Tehauntepec Isthmus, which connects Mexico’s mainland to the Yucatan Peninsula. When ETHOS students went to Chinantla in the summer of 2007, DECAMP was working hard to develop a women’s program and to expand the albergue (student dormitory). The objective of the women’s program is to create confidence among the mothers and daughters of Chinantla. Social events such as volleyball games, cooking big meals, and evenings of music and dancing are …

Pakistan: Works With Photovoltaic Systems And Solar Stills, Faizan Ahmad
ETHOS Technical Reports
During a six week internship with the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) of Pakistan, work on many different fronts was accomplished. Maintenance work was done on photovoltaic systems and solar stills which the government had provided to villages in the Thar desert on a pilot basis. A brief training course on the installation and operation of photovoltaic systems was completed. Also, an inspection manual for newly installed photovoltaic systems in villages was tested and refined.

The Benefits Of Bathing Buds: Water Calyces Protect Flowers From A Microlepidopteran Herbivore, Jane E. Carlson, Kyle E. Harms
The Benefits Of Bathing Buds: Water Calyces Protect Flowers From A Microlepidopteran Herbivore, Jane E. Carlson, Kyle E. Harms
Faculty Publications
Protective floral structures may evolve in response to the negative effects of floral herbivores. For example, water calyces - liquid-filled, cup-like structures resulting from the fusion of sepals - may reduce floral herbivory by submerging buds during their development. Our observations of a water-calyx plant, Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana (Gesneriaceae), revealed that buds were frequently attacked by ovipositing moths (Alucitidae), whose larvae consumed anthers and stigmas before corollas opened. Almost 25% of per-plant flower production was destroyed by alucitid larvae over two seasons, far exceeding the losses to all other floral herbivores combined. Experimental manipulation of water levels in calyces showed that …

Parasite Findings In Archeological Remains: Diagnosis And Interpretation, Adauto Arajuo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira
Parasite Findings In Archeological Remains: Diagnosis And Interpretation, Adauto Arajuo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Paleoparasitology has contributed to resolving the debate about the peopling of the Americas and determining the antiquity of human parasite infection. Hookworm (Ancylostomidae) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and other exclusive human intestinal parasites have been recorded in pre-Columbian America. These parasite species originated in pre-hominids and have accompanied humans across continents when people went out of Africa. However, for those human populations that crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska, cold climate conditions hampered parasite transmission. Alternative migration routes have been proposed to explain the presence of these parasites in pre-Columbian populations in the Americas. Other …

Material Possessions And Religious Boundaries In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter
Material Possessions And Religious Boundaries In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The 1719 trial of two Jews from Brest (Brześć) accused of breaking into a Bernardine church and robbing a tomb of a prominent noble woman, raises questions of material possessions and religious boundaries. Among things stolen were clothes and textiles used in wrapping the coffin of the deceased woman. They were also one of the reasons that the robbery was discovered and the Jews were caught: some months following the robbery the daughters of the two Jewish robbers were spotted wearing dresses made of the stolen textiles. This case is certainly most notorious but it is not the only example …
Controlled Eutrophication System And Process, David E. Brune, John A. Collier, Thomas E. Schwedler, A. G. Eversole
Controlled Eutrophication System And Process, David E. Brune, John A. Collier, Thomas E. Schwedler, A. G. Eversole
Clemson Patents
A controlled eutrophication system and process are disclosed. The system includes the combination of a partitioned aquaculture system in conjunction with an anaerobic digester. Wastewater containing pollutants, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, are fed to the partitioned aquaculture system. Algae within the system converts the pollutants into algal biomass. Fish populations, in turn, control the algal populations. The fish populations may then be periodically harvested for human or animal consumption. A polishing chamber is contained in the system in which aquatic organisms remove substantial amounts of the algae from batch fed additions of water. The water is then discharged to …

Evidence For Gondwanan Vicariance In An Ancient Clade Of Gecko Lizards, Tony Gamble, Aaron M. Bauer, E. Greenbaum, Todd R. Jackman
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Aim
Geckos (Reptilia: Squamata), due to their great age and global distribution, are excellent candidates to test hypotheses of Gondwanan vicariance against post‐Gondwanan dispersal. Our aims are: to generate a phylogeny of the sphaerodactyl geckos and their closest relatives; evaluate previous phylogenetic hypotheses of the sphaerodactyl geckos with regard to the other major gecko lineages; and to use divergence date estimates to inform a biogeographical scenario regarding Gondwanan relationships and assess the roles of vicariance and dispersal in shaping the current distributions of the New World sphaerodactyl geckos and their closest Old World relatives.

A Typology And Discourse Analysis Of The Status And Appointments Of Librarians At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin
A Typology And Discourse Analysis Of The Status And Appointments Of Librarians At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study examined the status of librarians at land grant universities in each state (n=50). University websites were the source of data on librarians’ employee group (faculty/staff), administrator title, rank system, tenure eligibility, and faculty senate representation. The data were analyzed to find frequencies and cross tabulations. The findings indicate four status types in the population: Professorial (n=21); Other ranks with tenure (n=14); Other ranks without tenure (n=5); Academic or professional staff (n=10). Eighty percent of the institutions in the population have librarians who are faculty (n=40), and 85% of …

The brothers Lazaro and Angelo Nantua were moneylenders in Gavi, a town under Genoese dominion, during the second half of the sixteenth century. In 1592, Angelo got into a violent argument with the chancellor of the town. This incident started a series of legal proceedings against the brothers that went on for years. The two documents I choose are (1) an inventory of all their posessions made in 1592 by order of the doge in Genoa (2)a letter written by the local podesta in which he complaints that they do not wear the yellow hat and gives a detailed description …

Working Trees For Wildlife
Working Trees (USDA-NAC)
Sustaining quality wildlife habitat is challenging, especially where agricultural fields offer little plant diversity and in suburban areas where human development has fragmented the landscape.
Increasingly, these areas are managed primarily for people. But, an amazing variety of animals call the same areas home and depend on us to make sure that their needs are met.
Working Trees are trees and shrubs, especially native species, that are in the right place to do a specific job. Whether Working Trees come in the form of a windbreak to enhance crop or livestock production or a riparian forest buffer to filter storm …

Evaluation Of Two Washington State Department Of Transportation Stormwater Facilities Along State Route 18 Highway, Sherry L. Weber
Evaluation Of Two Washington State Department Of Transportation Stormwater Facilities Along State Route 18 Highway, Sherry L. Weber
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
In 1987 the Clean Water Act (CWA) was amended to address non-point sources through the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program, which was divided into Phase I and Phase II. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a NPDES Phase I permit applicant, which requires them to monitor their facilities for specific water quality parameters. Effective and affordable treatment of highway runoff is a significant concern, because various pollutants found in non-point source runoff can impact the overall health of a watershed. Furthermore, many factors influence the types and concentrations of pollutants found in stormwater and the various types …

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad
The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad
Theses and Dissertations
Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, combats the host immune response by injecting proteins called Yops "Yersinia outer proteins" into the eukaryotic host cells using a type III secretion system "T3SS". The activity of the type T3SS is regulated by several proteins including YscF, YopN, TyeA, SycN, YscB, LcrG, and LcrV. YscF forms the extracellular needle complex of the T3SS and is involved in secretion regulation and in sensing environmental signals for secretion activation. YopN, TyeA, SycN, and YscB form a complex in the cytosol of Y. pestis that blocks the secretion of Yops when conditions do not favor …
Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit
Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit
Theses and Dissertations
To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …
Jewish Consumption And Material Culture In The Early Modern Period, Emw 2007
Jewish Consumption And Material Culture In The Early Modern Period, Emw 2007
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
At the 2007 Early Modern Workshop, speakers discussed the representation of Jews and their way of life in art and the use of various types of images and objects by scholars trying to learn about Jewish rituals, customs, and culture: images from Christian sources (Shalom Sabar), beakers (Vivian Mann), cloth and textiles used to make parokhet (Rachel Greenblatt). Can symbols used in synagogues and books tell us much about the values of the Jewish community? What role did ideology play in public representations of the Jewish community (Limor Mintz-Manor)? Scholars discussed the usefulness and pitfalls of using inventory records, focusing …
