Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (Snps) Distinguish Indian-Origin And Chinese-Origin Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Betsy Ferguson, Summer L. Street, Hollis Wright, Carlo Pearson, Yibing Jia, Shaun L. Thompson, Patrick Allibone, Christopher J. Dubay, Eliot Spindel, Robert B. Norgren

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

BACKGROUND: Rhesus macaques serve a critical role in the study of human biomedical research. While both Indian and Chinese rhesus macaques are commonly used, genetic differences between these two subspecies affect aspects of their behavior and physiology, including response to simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can play an important role in both establishing ancestry and in identifying genes involved in complex diseases. We sequenced the 3' end of rhesus macaque genes in an effort to identify gene-based SNPs that could distinguish between Indian and Chinese rhesus macaques and aid in association analysis.

RESULTS: We surveyed the …

Intercenter Reliability And Validity Of The Rhesus Macaque Genechip, Fenghai Duan, Eliot R. Spindel, Yu-Hua Li, Robert B. Norgren

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

BACKGROUND: The non-human primate (NHP) research community has been intensely interested in obtaining whole-genome expression arrays for their work. Recently, novel approaches were used to generate the DNA sequence information for a rhesus GeneChip. To test the reliability of the rhesus GeneChip across different centers, RNA was isolated from five sources: cerebral cortex, pancreas, thymus, testis, and an immortalized fibroblast cell line. Aliquots of this RNA were sent to each of three centers: Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Oregon National Primate Research Center and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Each center labeled the samples and hybridized them with two …

Factors Regulating Arteriolar Tone During Microvascular Growth, Julie Balch Samora Jan 2007

Factors Regulating Arteriolar Tone During Microvascular Growth, Julie Balch Samora

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Growth of the arteriolar network is accompanied by progressive changes in pressure and flow, and in the metabolic environment to which the arterioles are exposed. This dissertation was carried out to investigate the extent to which mechanisms involved in local blood flow regulation may also change during this growth. We isolated gracilis muscle arterioles from weanling (age 25-26 days) and juvenile (44-66 days) rats, and studied the responsiveness of these vessels to both myogenic and endothelium-dependent stimuli. Overall arteriolar responses to the endothelium-dependent agonists acetylcholine (ACh), A23187, VEGF and simvastatin were not different between age groups. Responses of juvenile arterioles …

Automated Ventricular Measurements Using Gabor Wavelets, Hemalatha Sampath Jan 2007

Automated Ventricular Measurements Using Gabor Wavelets, Hemalatha Sampath

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the widely used medical technologies for diagnosis of various degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. In degenerative diseases the brain atrophies resulting in enlarged ventricles. The segmentation of the ventricle and the total ventricle volume measurement can be important in the analysis of the neurological disease severity and in studies of animal models of disease used to advance treatments for people. This thesis is focused on using Gabor wavelets for ventricular measurements in a rabbit model of Alzheimer's disease.;Standard intensity-based tools like Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) used for human brain segmentation requires a priori …

Spatially Scaled Response Of A Lazuli Bunting Population To Fire, Michael L. Wolfe, Andreas Leidolf, Tim Nuttle Jan 2007

Spatially Scaled Response Of A Lazuli Bunting Population To Fire, Michael L. Wolfe, Andreas Leidolf, Tim Nuttle

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We examined the response of Lazuli Bunting (Passerina amoena) to fire in Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) woodland at Camp Williams, Utah, during 1993–1998. Overall, Lazuli Bunting abundance on the study area increased significantly during the 2 years after a stand-replacing wildfire, which covered 800 ha of Gambel oak woodland. This increase suggested that Lazuli Buntings respond positively to fire. However, a comparison of pre- and post-fire abundance of Lazuli Bunting for 2 groups of monitoring plots with different fire histories showed that abundance was significantly greater during the post-fire period for both burned and unburned plots. …

Browsing Lawns? Responses Of Acacia Nigrescens To Ungulate Browsing In An African Savanna., D. A. Fornara, Johan T. Du Toit Jan 2007

Browsing Lawns? Responses Of Acacia Nigrescens To Ungulate Browsing In An African Savanna., D. A. Fornara, Johan T. Du Toit

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We measured browsing-induced responses of Acacia trees to investigate "browsing lawns" as an analogy to grazing lawns in a semiarid eutrophic African savanna. During the two-year field study, we measured plant tolerance, resistance, and phenological traits, while comparing variation in leaf nitrogen and specific leaf area (SLA) across stands of Acacia nigrescens, Miller, that had experienced markedly different histories of attack from large herbivores. Trees in heavily browsed stands developed (1) tolerance traits such as high regrowth abilities in shoots and leaves, high annual branch growth rates, extensive tree branching and evidence of internal N translocation, and (2) resistance traits …

Lateral Wall Protein Content Mediates Alterations In Cochlear Outer Hair Cell Mechanics Before And After Hearing Onset, Heather Jensen Smith, Richard Hallworth Jan 2007

Lateral Wall Protein Content Mediates Alterations In Cochlear Outer Hair Cell Mechanics Before And After Hearing Onset, Heather Jensen Smith, Richard Hallworth

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

Specialized outer hair cells (OHCs) housed within the mammalian cochlea exhibit active, nonlinear, mechanical responses to auditory stimulation termed electromotility. The extraordinary frequency resolution capacity of the cochlea requires an exquisitely equilibrated mechanical system of sensory and supporting cells. OHC electromotile length change, stiffness, and force generation are responsible for a 100-fold increase in hearing sensitivity by augmenting vibrational input to non-motile sensory inner hair cells. Characterization of OHC mechanics is crucial for understanding and ultimately preventing permanent functional deficits due to overstimulation or as a consequence of various cochlear pathologies. The OHCs' major structural assembly is a highly-specialized lateral …

The Market-Participant Exception And The Dormant Foreign Commerce Clause, J. T. Hutchens Jan 2007

The Market-Participant Exception And The Dormant Foreign Commerce Clause, J. T. Hutchens

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note argues against extending the Market-Participant Exception to the Dormant Foreign Commerce Clause, asserting that such an extension would undermine the federal government's exclusive authority over foreign affairs and potentially disrupt national foreign policy. While the exception is well-established in interstate commerce, its application to foreign commerce raises unique concerns, including the risk of international retaliation and the erosion of the "one voice" principle in international relations. The author emphasizes that the constitutional separation of powers and the Supremacy Clause further support the necessity of federal primacy in foreign trade matters.

Blackthink's™ Acting White Stigma In Education And How It Fosters Academic Paralysis In Black Youth, Kimberly Jade Norwood Jan 2007

Blackthink's™ Acting White Stigma In Education And How It Fosters Academic Paralysis In Black Youth, Kimberly Jade Norwood

Scholarship@WashULaw

Black students who attend school regularly, participate in the classroom experience — by either participating in class and/or turning in homework, take “AP” classes, and who perform well on tests are, not uncommonly, accused of “acting white.” This happened to me as a child, it has happened to my children and it has happened to black youth I have interviewed throughout the country. This Article explores the practice within the black community of blacks who attack — verbally and sometimes physically — other blacks simply because the latter perform well in school. The Article explores the ironies of this attack …

The Scientific Study Of Judicial Activism, Stefanie A. Lindquist, Frank B. Cross Jan 2007

The Scientific Study Of Judicial Activism, Stefanie A. Lindquist, Frank B. Cross

Scholarship@WashULaw

Claims of judicial activism are common, from both the right and the left, but they are seldom scrutinized closely. Prior tests of judicial activism have involved simply counting the number of cases in which justices vote to invalidate statutes. This data provides a rough guide but omits any consideration of the judicial legitimacy of the statute - a decision to strike down a plainly unconstitutional statute is appropriate judicial behavior. To provide a better test, we adjust the count of statutory invalidations for each justice of the Burger Court, based upon the degree to which the votes show a consistent …

Resistance Of The Target Islet Tissue To Autoimmune Destruction Contributes To Genetic Susceptibility In Type 1 Diabetes., Natasha J. Hill, Aleksandr Stotland, Michelle Solomon, Patrick Secrest, Elizabeth Getzoff, Nora Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

Type 1 diabetes occurs when self-reactive T lymphocytes destroy the insulin-producing islet beta cells of the pancreas. The defects causing this disease have often been assumed to occur exclusively in the immune system. We present evidence that genetic variation at the Idd9 diabetes susceptibility locus determines the resilience of the targets of autoimmunity, the islets, to destruction. Susceptible islets exhibit hyper-responsiveness to inflammatory cytokines resulting in enhanced cell death and increased expression of the death receptor Fas. Fas upregulation in beta cells is mediated by TNFR2, and colocalization of TNFR2 with the adaptor TRAF2 in NOD beta cells is altered. …

Mythos, Logos And The Poltics Of Justice, Dr. Dennis Patrick Slattery Ph.D. Jan 2007

Mythos, Logos And The Poltics Of Justice, Dr. Dennis Patrick Slattery Ph.D.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

United States Politics and Social Justice are forms that a mythology assumes in a culture. The former has lost sight of its earlier sustaining mythos: an image of Paradise. It has also become unconscious of the earlier writings of Plato and Aristotle on the nature and structure of a virtuous society ruled by leaders of wisdom. By revisioning earlier epistemologies outlined by the ancient Greek philosophers, politics and social justice movements can reclaim their origins. The conclusion outlines a series of 13 differentiations between US. politics and the currents of social justice. For men are easily spoilt; not everyone can …

Roger Scruton: The West And The Rest Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson Jan 2007

Roger Scruton: The West And The Rest Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In The West and the Rest, Scruton examines the clash between two civilizations: Islam and the West. He contrasts the dynamic, highly institutionalized, but increasingly decadent secular legal tradition of the West, which promotes such ideas as citizenship, corporate personality, and territorial jurisdiction, with the backward-looking but unified vision of a universal community associated with the Koran. One thing that troubles the relationship of these two civilizations today is a crisis of confidence in the West, which has produced a nihilistic, self-condemning “culture of repudiation.” This countercultural solvent has been infiltrating the flood of cultural byproducts of the West that …

U.S. Counterterrorism Policy And Superpower Compliance With International Human Rights Norms, Kenneth Anderson Jan 2007

U.S. Counterterrorism Policy And Superpower Compliance With International Human Rights Norms, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This essay, originally prepared for a symposium on Guantanamo and international law, provides an brief overview of the elements that a comprehensive US counterterrorism should encompass. This overview is set against the question of how the US, as the world's superpower, ought to address its international law obligations. The essay then sets that question against the still-further question of what it means to be the superpower in a world that some believe is gradually evolving into a multipolar world, but which is currently a world of a conjoined US-international global system of security.

The essay defends the concept of counterterrorism …

The Biogeography And Distribution Of Megafauna At Three California Seamounts, Lonny J. Lundsten Jan 2007

The Biogeography And Distribution Of Megafauna At Three California Seamounts, Lonny J. Lundsten

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Video recordings from Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) dives are used to describe the biogeography and distribution of megafauna communities found at three seamounts off central and southern California, USA. In total, 27 ROV dives were annotated in detail using the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's (MBARI) Video Annotation Reference System (VARS). Video analysis yielded 136,716 biological observations. In all, 236 megafauna taxa are described from observations at these seamounts. Seamount bathymetry was analyzed to relate the observed faunal distribution to seamount slope, aspect, and bathymetric position index. Video transects, collected at Davidson Seamount in 2006 and at Pioneer Seamount in …

Understanding Gilia Tenuiflora Ssp. Arenaria Population Fluctuations And Community Relationships, Brianne Bieschke

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Around the world, species are being lost to development and invasive species. An endangered species, Gilia tenuiflora ssp. arenaria, exists within the East Campus Housing area of California State University, Monterey Bay on the former Fort Ord military base. As part of the Fort Ord Habitat Conservation Plan, the Gilia must be monitored as part of the Federal Endangered Species Act and for population management. Little is known about this Gilia species, and the goal of this study is to establish baseline data on population fluctuations and community structure in the East Campus Housing area in order to better manage …

Fda Jurisdiction: A Matter Of Definitions, Lewis Grossman Jan 2007

Fda Jurisdiction: A Matter Of Definitions, Lewis Grossman

Contributions to Books

This chapter, new in the third edition, concerns how Congress, the Food and Drug Administration, and the courts have treated the definitions of "food," "drug," "cosmetic," "device," and "human biological product." The scope of FDA's power is delineated almost entirely by the list of product categories over which it has jurisdiction. As the materials in this chapter show, the product definitions are strikingly broad and thus confer jurisdiction over a vast range of goods. Furthermore, the definitions are remarkably plastic, providing FDA with great flexibility to decide whether and how to regulate products. Sometimes FDA has interpreted the definitions expansively, …
