Fda Jurisdiction: A Matter Of Definitions, Lewis Grossman Jan 2007

Fda Jurisdiction: A Matter Of Definitions, Lewis Grossman

Contributions to Books

This chapter, new in the third edition, concerns how Congress, the Food and Drug Administration, and the courts have treated the definitions of "food," "drug," "cosmetic," "device," and "human biological product." The scope of FDA's power is delineated almost entirely by the list of product categories over which it has jurisdiction. As the materials in this chapter show, the product definitions are strikingly broad and thus confer jurisdiction over a vast range of goods. Furthermore, the definitions are remarkably plastic, providing FDA with great flexibility to decide whether and how to regulate products. Sometimes FDA has interpreted the definitions expansively, …

Evaluation Of A Putative Entomopathogenic Caenorhabditis (Nematoda: Rhabditid) And Associated Serratia (Proteobacteria: Enterobacteriaceae), Kaitlin M. Bonner Jan 2007

Evaluation Of A Putative Entomopathogenic Caenorhabditis (Nematoda: Rhabditid) And Associated Serratia (Proteobacteria: Enterobacteriaceae), Kaitlin M. Bonner

Master's Theses and Capstones

A major goal of modern biology is to extend our understanding of biological systems investigated in the laboratory to their ecological and evolutionary context. With extensive understanding of the function, development and genetics of C. elegans, exploring the link between this laboratory model and the environment in which this system evolved would be very interesting because very little is known about the natural history of this premier model organism.

A new strain of Caenorhabditis briggsae (SoAf) with an associated bacterium, Serratia sp. SCBI, has been isolated from South Africa using common entomopathogenic nematode trapping methods. This study taxonomically identified and …

Advances And Missed Opportunities In The International Prosecution Of Gender-Based Crimes, Susana Sacouto Jan 2007

Advances And Missed Opportunities In The International Prosecution Of Gender-Based Crimes, Susana Sacouto

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: In the past decade, and particularly since 1998, there has been an incredible transformation in the treatment of sex-based and gender- based violence' in the fields of international humanitarian law and international criminal law. Before this, crimes committed exclusively or disproportionately against women and girls, in times of conflict, were largely either ignored, or at most, treated as secondary to other crimes. Despite the fact that rape and other forms of sexual violence had been widely reported during World War HI, for instance, the crime of rape was not expressly included in either the London Charter, establishing the International …

Iraq, Secured Transactions, And The Promise Of Islamic Law, Mark J. Sundahl Jan 2007

Iraq, Secured Transactions, And The Promise Of Islamic Law, Mark J. Sundahl

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

When Iraq regains political stability, major reconstruction projects will have to be funded and local businesses will need financing in order to gain a foothold in the new economy. In order to attract the necessary capital, the Iraqi law of secured transactions must be reformed to allow for lenders to take security in the assets of their borrowers. However, the challenge of reforming Iraqi commercial law is complicated by the requirement under the new Iraqi Constitution that any new statutes enacted by the Iraqi legislature comply with the principles of Islamic law. This Article sets forth proposals for reform that …

Solution Conformations Of Three Small Cluster Oligosaccharide Mimetics (Scom) From D-Glucosamine, D-Altrosamine, And (-)-Quinic Acid, Q. L. Nguyen, L. Olmstead, S. Bains, Andreas H. Franz Jan 2007

Solution Conformations Of Three Small Cluster Oligosaccharide Mimetics (Scom) From D-Glucosamine, D-Altrosamine, And (-)-Quinic Acid, Q. L. Nguyen, L. Olmstead, S. Bains, Andreas H. Franz

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Three small cluster oligosaccharide mimetics were synthesized, and their CDCl3 solution conformations were determined with NMR experiments. In this paper, we confirmed conformational similarities in rings A and B in all three compounds, and we provide the overall solution geometries. In all cases, an unusual cyclohexane twist-boat conformation with longrange 4 J-(W)-coupling was observed. The origin of the bias towards the twist-boat was attributed primarily to the fused ring system between the cyclohexane ring and the dioxacyclopentane (acetal) including hydrogen bonding. Temperature-annealed molecular dynamics simulations complemented the NMR experiments and supported the overall assignment.

Transitions: Starting The Second, Full Circle, Mary Colleen Vreeland Jan 2007

Transitions: Starting The Second, Full Circle, Mary Colleen Vreeland

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will focus on the transitional influences that have led me to start the second circle of my professional life. It is an open and honest exploration of the back-story of my life and the academic and professional influences that led me to seek a Master of Fine Arts Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. With no parallels and therefore no excuses insinuated, I will be open and dissect more of myself as the whole focus of the thesis in hopes of offering clarity to myself and other mature and disabled students seeking to become a better teacher and artist.

Cannabinoid Modulation Of Chemotaxis Of Macrophages And Macrophage-Like Cells, Erinn Shenee Raborn Jan 2007

Cannabinoid Modulation Of Chemotaxis Of Macrophages And Macrophage-Like Cells, Erinn Shenee Raborn

Theses and Dissertations

Exogenous and endogenous cannabinoids have been reported to modulate functional activities of macrophages. It is recognized that macrophages express primarily the CB2 cannabinoid receptor, but recent studies indicate that its expression is differential in relation to activation state with maximal levels occurring when cells are in "responsive" and "primed" states. The functional activities of macrophages when in these states of activation are the most susceptible to the action of cannabinoids, at least in terms of a functional linkage to the CB2. To assess the effect of cannabinoid treatment on macrophage chemotaxis and test the hypothesis that cannabinoids inhibit the chemotactic …

Functional Characteristics Of Nematocysts Found On The Scyphomedusa Cyanea Capillata, Sean Colin, John H. Costello Jan 2007

Functional Characteristics Of Nematocysts Found On The Scyphomedusa Cyanea Capillata, Sean Colin, John H. Costello

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Although prey capture by cnidarians is mediated through nematocysts, their influence on prey selection by cnidarians remains poorly documented. The difficulty in visualizing nematocyst–prey interactions remains the chief obstacle to understanding how the wide variety of nematocyst types influences the mechanics of prey capture. One solution to this limitation has been to assign functional roles to nematocysts based on morphological characters of discharged cnidae. Here we report results of an alternative approach based upon dynamic traits of nematocyst discharge. We examined tubule lengths, tubule discharge velocities and net-to-gross displacement ratios of tubules of discharging nematocysts possessed by the cosmopolitan scyphomedusa, …

Density-Dependent Effect On Reproductive Behaviour Of Lysmata Amboinensis And L. Boggessi (Decapoda: Caridea: Hippolytidae), Dong Zhang, Andrew L. Rhyne, Junda Lin Jan 2007

Density-Dependent Effect On Reproductive Behaviour Of Lysmata Amboinensis And L. Boggessi (Decapoda: Caridea: Hippolytidae), Dong Zhang, Andrew L. Rhyne, Junda Lin

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

We compared the reproductive behaviours of two protandric simultaneous hermaphroditic species (Lysmata amboinensis and L. boggessi) that belong to two groups of Lysmata shrimp with different morphology, geographical distribution, and density. Lysmata amboinensis occurs in tropical waters at low population densities, and L. boggessi is found in aggregation in sub-tropical and temperate areas. Reproductive behaviour of L. boggessi under two densities and L. amboinensis in different habitats were compared. Results show that L. amboinensis was much less active during mating than L. boggessi. Male shrimp of L. amboinensis did not display obvious pre-copulation behaviour. They also took …

Chemical Defenses: From Compounds To Communities, Valerie J. Paul, Koty H. Sharp Jan 2007

Chemical Defenses: From Compounds To Communities, Valerie J. Paul, Koty H. Sharp

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Marine natural products play critical roles in the chemical defense of many marine organisms and in some cases can influence the community structure of entire ecosystems. Although many marine natural products have been studied for biomedical activity, yielding important information about their biochemical effects and mechanisms of action, much less is known about ecological functions. The way in which marine consumers perceive chemical defenses can influence their health and survival and determine whether some natural products persist through a food chain. This article focuses on selected marine natural products, including okadaic acid, brevetoxins, lyngbyatoxin A, caulerpenyne, bryostatins, and isocyano terpenes, …

Property In-Laws, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2007

Property In-Laws, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

My family's story will be familiar to those who have read Eduardo Pefialver and Sonia Katyal's engaging article, Property Outlaws. Robert Fowler was, according to their taxonomy, an "[a]cquisitive outlaw[]": he was a trespasser whose actions were "oriented primarily toward direct appropriation." Pefialver and Katyal contrast the self-interested acquisitive outlaw with the other-regarding "[e]xpressive out law[]," who trespasses as a form of conscientious objection, and the "intersectional outlaw[]," whose actions commingle acquisitive and expressive elements. According to Pefialver and Katyal, property outlaws are underappreciated because, in appropriate circumstances, they serve both "redistributive" and "informational" functions. That is, property outlaws both …

Church, State, And The Practice Of Love, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2007

Church, State, And The Practice Of Love, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

In his first encyclical letter, Deus caritas est, Pope Benedict XVI describes the Church as a community of love. In this letter, he explores the organized practice love by and through the Church, and the relationship between this practice, on the one hand, and the Church's commitment to the just ordering of the State and society, on the other. God is love, he writes. This paper considers the implications of this fact for the inescapably complicated nexus of church-state relations in our constitutional order.

The specific goal for this paper is to draw from Deus caritas est some insight into …

Quantum Physics And Welfare Policy?, Jack C. Straton Jan 2007

Quantum Physics And Welfare Policy?, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Welfare policy is examined through the paradoxical logic of Nagarjuna’s tetralema, providing a lens through which wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics is then viewed. Through this process students are challenged to radically expand their critical-thinking horizons beyond conventional dualistic bounds. They learn not only this key property of quantum reality, but have to come to grips with the nature of knowledge itself, and the degree to which they censor their own awarenesses.
