Protective Potential Of Glimepiride And Nerium Oleander Extract On Lipid Profile, Body Growth Rate, And Renal Function In Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Maged M. Yassin, Saleh N. Mwafy

Turkish Journal of Biology

This study aimed to assess the protective potential of glimepiride and Nerium oleander extract on lipid profile, body growth rate, and renal function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The animals were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group was rendered diabetic by intraperitoneal injection of a single dose of 50 mg/kg body weight streptozotocin. Rats with glucose levels >200 mg/dl were subdivided into 3 sub-groups. Rats in the first sub-group remained without treatment and were considered diabetic. Those in the second and third subgroups were orally administered 0.1 mg/kg body weight daily glimepiride and 250 mg/kg body weight daily …

Templates For Creating Standardized Cartographic Productsfor Montana County Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plans, Bruce Albert Koerner

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Montana Critical Infrastructure GIS Committee, on behalf of the Montana Department of Administration, has been involved for several years in concentrated efforts to make various types of map products available to those involved in emergency management throughout the state. As a component of this process, the Committee authorized funding for a project devoted to the development of standardized map products for pre-disaster mitigation (PDM) plans during the spring of 2006, and the research was completed later that year. The requirement for the development of these plans was established by the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000. In Montana, implementation of …

Entomology Faculty Publications

The effects of two herbivorous insects, Galerucella calmariensis Duftschmid and Myzus lythri L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), feeding on purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L. (Myrtiflorae: Lythraceae), were measured in the presence of two insect predators, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). A greenhouse cage experiment examined the direct effects of these predators on these herbivores, and indirect effects of predation on aboveground biomass, defoliation, number of leaves, and internode length. Eight treatment combinations with G. calmariensis, M. lythri, H. axyridis and C. carnea were applied to caged L. salicaria. The experiment ended …

Evaluating Rangeland Conditions In Neighboring Protected Areas Of Russia And Mongolia, Sidney Rankin Holmes Jan 2007

Evaluating Rangeland Conditions In Neighboring Protected Areas Of Russia And Mongolia, Sidney Rankin Holmes

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, demands on the vast steppe rangelands and other natural resources in Mongolia, Russia, and other Central Asian states experienced drastic changes. Moving from a socialistic system into a free-market economy of supply and demand saw regulatory institutions, which historically managed natural resources like rangelands, dissolved or without the capacity to enforce their work requirements. Like other places in Russia, the region of the Kosh-Agach Wildlife Refuge experienced a decrease in demand for livestock products, which forced many rural peoples to move to urban areas in search of work. The opposite occurred …

Narrative As Communication Activism: Research Relationships In Social Justice Projects, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker Jan 2007

Narrative As Communication Activism: Research Relationships In Social Justice Projects, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

When they talk about CASA or the project, Deb and Elizabeth use the words “we, our, or us,” not “them or they.”
Deb and Elizabeth are part of CASA because they understand us. They get it.
Lots of people study domestic violence, but they were the first researchers interested in us, the workers. We felt validated because university researchers thought what we did was important, and they asked us to help them understand our work.
They didn’t lecture us; they listened to us.

These are some of the staff’s observations about our participation in the University Community Initiative Project (UCI), …

Memory And Melodrama In Colonial And Postcolonial French Film, Mary Catherine Dillon Jan 2007

Memory And Melodrama In Colonial And Postcolonial French Film, Mary Catherine Dillon

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Critical analysis of colonial and postcolonial cinema is a growing field of academic research. The editor of the International Journal of Francophone Studies, Kamal Salhi, explains that many American and English university French programs now offer degrees in this area of study (2). One line of research in this field centers on colonial and postcolonial memory in French cinema. This is because colonial memory has a problematic relationship to French national ideology. This thesis explores the causal connection between French colonial and postcolonial memory and melodramatic structures. Two French films, Indochine and Chocolat were the subjects of this study. These …

Age And Diet Strongly Affect Total Fat Body Protein In Lubber Grasshoppers, Leigh Erin Fuller Jan 2007

Age And Diet Strongly Affect Total Fat Body Protein In Lubber Grasshoppers, Leigh Erin Fuller

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Diet is the only environmental variable that has been shown to slow aging. Late-onset caloric restriction results in increased longevity in female grasshoppers. To better
understand the physiological processes involved, and how rapid the responses can occur, we studied the effect of diet on total fat body protein. We tested the effects of short-term treatments on the amount of fat body protein for day 20 and day 50 of adulthood: ad libitum feeding (free access to food), starvation (only water), caloric restriction (1.5g of lettuce) and heat shocking (60 min at 48°C). Grasshoppers were initially fed ad libitum and then …

Neurobiology Meets Social Psychology: An Explanation Of Feminists’ Attitudes Toward Abuse, Christen D. Hazlett Jan 2007

Neurobiology Meets Social Psychology: An Explanation Of Feminists’ Attitudes Toward Abuse, Christen D. Hazlett

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Why might traumatic events during childhood, such as child abuse, be related to strong identification with more radical feminist beliefs? One explanation may lie in the changes in morphology and physiology of the brain in individuals with a history of child abuse. These changes in the limbic system specifically may influence cognition, affect, and behaviors that are consistent with radical feminist ideology.

Selection During Larval Recruitment In A Blue Mussel Hybrid Zone, Melissa M. O’Connor Jan 2007

Selection During Larval Recruitment In A Blue Mussel Hybrid Zone, Melissa M. O’Connor

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The processes of recruitment in marine bivalves and their larvae can be caused by process that occur before, during, or after these organisms settle. The mussel species Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis form a hybrid zone located in southwest England. Individuals with hybrid genotypes settle in the M. galloprovincialis parental populations, but the hybrid zone does not appear to be expanding. Comparisons of allele and genotype frequencies of recently settled mussels from different age classes in the M. galloprovincialis population show a marked decrease in M. edulis-specific alleles and hybrid genotypes. These data demonstrate that there is likely selection acting …
