Optimization Of Cutting Conditions For Sustainable Machining Of Sintered Powder Metal Steels Using Pcbn And Carbide Tools, Kunal J. Joshi Jan 2006

Optimization Of Cutting Conditions For Sustainable Machining Of Sintered Powder Metal Steels Using Pcbn And Carbide Tools, Kunal J. Joshi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Powder metals are becoming a popular choice in the automotive and other manufacturing industries because of their ability to meet wide ranging product functional requirements without compromising the performance of the product. They offer various advantages, including weight reduction, near net-shape processing capability, and their ability to be sintered to achieve desired properties in the end-product. However, in order to satisfy the product design requirements during manufacturing, they need to be machined to the required tolerances. Machining of powder metals is quite different to machining of traditional metals because of their specific properties, including porosity. This thesis work deals with …

Influence Of Flux Deposition Non-Uniformity On Molten Metal Spreading In Aluminum Joining By Brazing, Ramnath Narayanaswamy Jan 2006

Influence Of Flux Deposition Non-Uniformity On Molten Metal Spreading In Aluminum Joining By Brazing, Ramnath Narayanaswamy

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to study the effects of flux deposition non uniformity on spreading of molten metal. Flux deposition non-uniformity here means as to whether the amount of flux deposited in a non-uniform or uniform pattern helps in the better wetting and spreading characteristics of the molten metal or is detrimental to the process. The material selection constraint to the study was imposed by selecting brazing of aluminum i.e., aluminum alloy melting and flow over an aluminum alloy substrate. The study was carried out by conducting a number of Hot Stage microscopy tests using aluminum silicon alloy …

Experimental Study And Quantification Of Emissions In Control Atmopshere Brazing Process, Ajay Babu Renduchintala Jan 2006

Experimental Study And Quantification Of Emissions In Control Atmopshere Brazing Process, Ajay Babu Renduchintala

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The work explains how the dynamics of the release of water vapors from flux during the Control Atmosphere Brazing influences the process conditions important for the quality of the brazed product. The process involves sequential events such as continuous ramp-up heating, flux and filler melting, reactive flow, isothermal dwell and rapid quench solidification performed under the controlled atmosphere. During this complex process effluents are released. Some effluents are detrimental for the product quality (water vapor) and some are harmful for the environment (HF). We selected to study water vapor emissions with an objective to quantify these emissions and to consider …

A Fast Algorithm For Data Mining, Aarathi Raghu Jan 2006

A Fast Algorithm For Data Mining, Aarathi Raghu

Master's Projects

In the past few years, there has been a keen interest in mining frequent itemsets in large data repositories. Frequent itemsets correspond to the set of items that occur frequently in transactions in a database. Several novel algorithms have been developed recently to mine closed frequent itemsets - these itemsets are a subset of the frequent itemsets. These algorithms are of practical value: they can be applied to real-world applications to extract patterns of interest in data repositories. However, prior to using an algorithm in practice, it is necessary to know its performance as well implementation issues. In this project, …

Juice: An Svg Rendering Peer For Java Swing, Ignatius Yuwono Jan 2006

Juice: An Svg Rendering Peer For Java Swing, Ignatius Yuwono

Master's Projects

SVG—a W3C XML standard—is a relatively new language for describing low-level vector drawings. Due to its cross-platform capabilities and support for events, SVG may potentially be used in interactive GUIs/graphical front-ends. However, a complete and full-featured widget set for SVG does not exist at the time of this writing. I have researched and implemented a framework which retargets a complete and mature raster- based widget library—the JFC Swing GUI library—into a vector-based display substrate: SVG. My framework provides SVG with a full-featured widget set, as well as augmenting Swing’s platform coverage. Furthermore, by using bytecode instrumentation techniques, my Swing to …

Finding Optimal Reduct For Rough Sets By Using A Decision Tree Learning Algorithm, Xin Li Jan 2006

Finding Optimal Reduct For Rough Sets By Using A Decision Tree Learning Algorithm, Xin Li

Master's Projects

Rough Set theory is a mathematical theory for classification based on structural analysis of relational data. It can be used to find the minimal reduct. Minimal reduct is the minimal knowledge representation for the relational data. The theory has been successfully applied to various domains in data mining. However, a major limitation in Rough Set theory is that finding the minimal reduct is an NP-hard problem. C4.5 is a very popular decision tree-learning algorithm. It is very efficient at generating a decision tree. This project uses the decision tree generated by C4.5 to find the optimal reduct for a relational …

Cooperative Interval Caching In Clustered Multimedia Servers, Kim Tran Jan 2006

Cooperative Interval Caching In Clustered Multimedia Servers, Kim Tran

Master's Projects

In this project, we design a cooperative interval caching (CIC) algorithm for clustered video servers, and evaluate its performance through simulation. The CIC algorithm describes how distributed caches in the cluster cooperate to serve a given request. With CIC, a clustered server can accommodate twice (95%) more number of cached streams than the clustered server without cache cooperation. There are two major processes of CIC to find available cache space for a given request in the cluster: to find the server containing the information about the preceding request of the given request; and to find another server which may have …

Age-Related Alterations In The Dynamics Of L-Glutamate Regulation In The Striatum Of The Fischer 344 Rat, Justin Robert Nickell Jan 2006

Age-Related Alterations In The Dynamics Of L-Glutamate Regulation In The Striatum Of The Fischer 344 Rat, Justin Robert Nickell

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

L-glutamate is the predominant excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter inthe mammalian central nervous system. Prior aging studies have focusedprimarily on dopaminergic circuitry of the striatum, and data obtained studyingglutamate regulation in the striatum have been largely equivocal. Thesediscrepancies are due in large part to the limitations of microdialysis; while it isextremely sensitive to minute concentrations of analyte, it is lacking in terms ofthe temporal resolution necessary to study a neurotransmitter with rapid releaseand clearance kinetics such as glutamate. In order to address this matter, ourlaboratory has designed a ceramic-based multisite microelectrode with thecapability to detect and analyze fluctuations in extracellular glutamateconcentrations …

Basis Variability And Its Effects On Hedging Efficiency For Kentucky Feeder Cattle, Nathaniel J. Routt Jan 2006

Basis Variability And Its Effects On Hedging Efficiency For Kentucky Feeder Cattle, Nathaniel J. Routt

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Kentucky plays a vital role in the beef supply chain. The cow/calf producers,back-grounding operations, and order buying industry are important parts of Kentucky'sagricultural economy. Basis risk is an issue that affects these groups in a negative way. Agood estimate of the expected basis must be available to make hedging efficient.Simulations were performed on Kentucky price data to determine the effectiveness ofshort hedging for Kentucky producers. A model was also used to describe some of thefactors that determine basis levels. The research revealed that it is difficult to predictbasis within an acceptable range to make short hedging with futures efficient. Eventhough …
