Integration Of Low-Power Digital Circuitry Into Undergraduate Curricula, Glenn Ellis, Sarah Wodin-Schwartz, Baaba Andam, Israel Koren, C. Mani Krishna, C. Andras Moritz

Engineering: Faculty Publications

The impact of this effort will be the following: (1) Power-aware issues are becoming of central importance in many applications. These curriculum modules will transfer an increasingly important subdiscipline of computer systems to the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. (2) Students will learn the value, both ethical and economic, of sustainable technologies. (3) The project will assist in the education of women and racial minorities. This is consistent with emphasis at Smith and UMass to actively seek out under-represented minorities to enter the field of engineering.

Helicity Dependence Of The \Vec\Gamma\Vec N \To \Pi N Reaction Channels In The \Delta-Resonance Region, Eed M. Darwish, Mohamed A. El-Zohry Jan 2006

Helicity Dependence Of The \Vec\Gamma\Vec N \To \Pi N Reaction Channels In The \Delta-Resonance Region, Eed M. Darwish, Mohamed A. El-Zohry

Turkish Journal of Physics

Based on a prior effective Lagrangian model on single pion photoproduction from the nucleon, successfully tested in total and differential cross sections, the helicity dependence from the interaction of circularly polarized photons and a longitudinally polarized nucleon target is studied in the energy range from \pi-threshold through the \Delta(1232)-resonance region. The doubly polarized total and differential cross section differences for parallel \sigma^{3/2} and antiparallel \sigma^{1/2} helicity states are predicted and compared with recent experimental data. We show that the results are sensitive to interferences among different contributions to the process and, thus, represent a complementary test of the theoretical model. …

Pendant ^{13}C Nmr Spectroscopy Applied To Ch_N Groups, Azmi̇ Gençten, İrfan Şaka, Sedat Gümüş

Turkish Journal of Physics

Polarization enhancement nurtured during attached nucleus testing (PENDANT) NMR spectroscopy gives signals of quaternary carbon atoms in addition to signals indicative of CH, CH_2 and CH_3 groups. In this study, using product operator theory, analytical description of PENDANT NMR spectroscopy for CH_n (IS_n, I = 1/2, S = 1/2, n = 0, 1, 2, 3) spin systems are presented. Simulation and experimental results of PENDANT NMR spectroscopy are also presented. Theoretical results are found to be in exact agreement with the simulation results and in good agreement with the experimental ones.

Effect Of A Finite Number Of Electrons On The Physical Properties Of Two Dimensional Parabolic Quantum Dot, Berna Gülveren, Ülfet Atav, Mehmet Tomak Jan 2006

Effect Of A Finite Number Of Electrons On The Physical Properties Of Two Dimensional Parabolic Quantum Dot, Berna Gülveren, Ülfet Atav, Mehmet Tomak

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effect of number of particles on the physical properties of a two dimensional parabolic quantum dot system is investigated numerically at finite temperature. The Thomas-Fermi equation is solved self consistently with Poisson equation. The changes induced by electron-electron interaction are also analyzed. It is shown that the numerical procedure that is applied to solve the problem is very efficient at all temperatures.

Ramifications Of Lineland, Daniel Grumiller, Rene Meyer

Turkish Journal of Physics

A non-technical overview on gravity in two dimensions is provided. Applications discussed in this work comprise 2D type 0A/0B string theory, Black Hole evaporation/thermodynamics, toy models for quantum gravity, for numerical General Relativity in the context of critical collapse and for solid state analogues of Black Holes. Mathematical relations to integrable models, non-linear gauge theories, Poisson-sigma models, KdV surfaces and non-commutative geometry are presented.

Equivariant Localization For Susy Quantum Mechanics, Levent Akant Jan 2006

Equivariant Localization For Susy Quantum Mechanics, Levent Akant

Turkish Journal of Physics

We apply equivariant localization to supersymmetric quantum mechanics and show that the partition function localizes on the instantons of the theory. Our construction of equivariant cohomology for SUSY quantum mechanics is different than the ones that already exist in the literature. A hidden bosonic symmetry is made explicit and the supersymmetry is extended. New bosonic symmetry is the square of the new fermionic symmetry. The D term is now the parameter of the bosonic symmetry. This construction provides us with an equivariant complex together with a Cartan differential and makes the use of localization principle possible.

Plane Symmetric Solutions Of Gravitational Field Equations In Five Dimensions, A. N. Aliev, Hakan Cebeci̇, Teki̇n Dereli̇

Turkish Journal of Physics

We present the effective field equations obtained from a generalized gravity action with Euler-Poincaré term and a cosmological constant in a D dimensional bulk space-time. A class of plane-symmetric solutions that describe a 3-brane world embedded in a D=5 dimensional bulk space-time are given.

A Meaningful Md5 Hash Collision Attack, Narayana D. Kashyap Jan 2006

A Meaningful Md5 Hash Collision Attack, Narayana D. Kashyap

Master's Projects

It is now proved by Wang et al., that MD5 hash is no more secure, after they proposed an attack that would generate two different messages that gives the same MD5 sum. Many conditions need to be satisfied to attain this collision. Vlastimil Klima then proposed a more efficient and faster technique to implement this attack. We use these techniques to first create a collision attack and then use these collisions to implement meaningful collisions by creating two different packages that give identical MD5 hash, but when extracted, each gives out different files with contents specified by the atacker.

Concept Based Document Clustering Using A Simplicial Complex, A Hypergraph, Kevin Lind Jan 2006

Concept Based Document Clustering Using A Simplicial Complex, A Hypergraph, Kevin Lind

Master's Projects

This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of using a combinatorial topology structure (a simplicial complex) for document clustering. It is believed that a simplicial complex better identifies the latent concept space defined by a collection of documents than the use of hypergraphs or human categorization. The complex is constructed using groups of co-occurring words (term associations) identified using traditional data mining methods. Disjoint subsections of the complex (connect components) represent general concepts within the documents’ concept space. Documents clustered to these connect components will produce meaningful groupings. Instead, the most specific concepts (maximal simplices) are used as representative connect components to …

Automatic Extraction Of Keywords And Co-Occurrence Keyword Sets, Mong-Hang Vo Jan 2006

Automatic Extraction Of Keywords And Co-Occurrence Keyword Sets, Mong-Hang Vo

Master's Projects

Internet search has become an essential part of almost everyone’s daily life and work. To make wise personal and business decisions in a timely fashion, one must access the most relevant information efficiently. Because the amount of information on the Internet is enormous, it is important that a search engine ranks the information appropriately when it presents search results to users. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) addresses relevance ranking based on how significant a search word is in each document. Some innovative approaches of computing higher dimensional LSI (HD-LSI) were explored in this project. In traditional LSI, the term frequency-inverse document …

Enhancing Tcp Performance In Wired-Cum-Wireless Networks, Shruthi B. Krishnan Jan 2006

Enhancing Tcp Performance In Wired-Cum-Wireless Networks, Shruthi B. Krishnan

Master's Projects

Increasing popularity for mobile devices has prompted industrial and academic research towards improving the performance of wireless applications. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) plays an important role in defining a network’s performance, and its use in wireless networks has exposed several inadequacies in its operation. Tight coupling of TCP’s error and congestion control mechanisms has proven to be incompatible with the unique characteristics of wireless channels. TCP, designed for wired networks, assumes any loss of packet to be an indication of congestion in the network. Wireless networks exhibit a higher bit error rate, low and varying bandwidth, and disconnections of hosts …

Clustering High Dimensional Data Using Svm, Tam P. Ngo Jan 2006

Clustering High Dimensional Data Using Svm, Tam P. Ngo

Master's Projects

The Web contains massive amount of documents from across the globe to the point where it has become impossible to classify them manually. This project’s goal is to find a new method for clustering documents that are as close to humans’ classification as possible and at the same time to reduce the size of the documents. This project uses a combination of Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) with Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) calculation as well as Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification. With SVD, data sets are decomposed and can be truncated to reduce the data sets size. The reduced data set …
