We have searched for the di-pion transition chi(b)(2P) -> pi pi chi(b)(1P) in the CLEO III sample of Upsilon(3S) decays in the exclusive decay chain: Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi(b)(2P), chi(b)(2P) -> pi pi chi(b)(1P), chi(b)(1P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(1S) -> l(+)l(-). Our studies include both pi(+)pi(-) and pi(0)pi(0), each analyzed both in fully-reconstructed events and in events with one pion undetected. We show that the null hypothesis is not substantiated. Under reasonable assumptions, we find the partial decay width to be Gamma(chi(b)(2P) -> pi pi chi(b)(1P)) = (0.83 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.19) keV, with the uncertainties being statistical, …

We present a new method for studying the intrinsic brightness temperatures of the parsec-scale jet cores of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our method uses observed superluminal motions and observed brightness temperatures for a large sample of AGNs to constrain the characteristic intrinsic brightness temperature of the sample as a whole. To study changes in intrinsic brightness temperature, we assume that the Doppler factors of individual jets are constant in time, as justified by their relatively small changes in observed flux density. We find that in their median-low brightness temperature state, the sources in our sample have a narrow range of …

From e(+)e(-) collision data acquired with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we observe the non-D (D) over bar decay psi(3770)->gamma chi(c1) with a statistical significance of 6.6 standard deviations, using the two-photon cascades to J/psi and J/psi ->center dot(+)center dot(-). We determine sigma(e(+)e(-)->psi(3770))xB(psi(3770)->gamma chi(c1))=(18.0 +/- 3.3 +/- 2.5) pb and branching fraction B(psi(3770)->gamma chi(c1))=(2.8 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.4)x10(-3). We set 90% C.L. upper limits for the transition to chi(c2) (chi(c0)): sigma xB < 5.7 pb (< 282 pb) and B < 0.9x10(-3) (< 44x10(-3)). We also determine Gamma(psi(3770)->gamma chi(c1))/Gamma(psi(3770)->pi(+)pi(-)J/psi)=1.5 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.3 (> 1.0 at 90% C.L.), which bears upon the interpretation of X(3872).

It is well known that, beginning in 2000, the behaviour of the thermal correction to the Casimir force between real metals has been hotly debated. As was shown by several research groups, the Lifshitz theory, which provides the theoretical foundation for the calculation of both the van der Waals and Casimir forces, leads to different results depending on the model of metal conductivity used. To resolve these controversies, theoretical considerations based on the principles of thermodynamics and new experimental tests were invoked. We analyse the present status of the problem (in particular, the advantages and disadvantages of the approaches based …

From e(+)e(-) collision data acquired with the CLEO-c detector at CESR, we search for the non-D (D) over bar decays psi(3770)->gamma chi(cJ), with chi(cJ) reconstructed in four exclusive decays modes containing charged pions and kaons. We report the first observation of such decays for J=0 with a branching ratio of (0.73 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.06)%. The rates for different J are consistent with the expectations assuming psi(3770) is predominantly a 1(3)D(1) state of charmonium, but only if relativistic corrections are applied.
