A Decision Support Tool To Identify Countermeasures For Pedestrian Safety, Madhuri Uddaraju
A Decision Support Tool To Identify Countermeasures For Pedestrian Safety, Madhuri Uddaraju
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Enhancing pedestrian safety and providing a pedestrian-friendly environment are key goals for urban planning and public works organizations. The primary tasks to be accomplished in enhancing pedestrian safety include identifying high pedestrian risk locations and implementing appropriate countermeasures to minimize the risks. The selection of such countermeasures to address specific pedestrian safety concerns should be done based on factors that influence the risks. A methodology to identify suitable countermeasures for various scenarios is developed in this research. The factors considered for selection are crash contributing factors, roadway functional class, posted speed limits, type of location (intersection/non-intersection), vulnerable age groups of …

Character Strengths And Psychological Well-Being As Predictors Of Life Satisfaction Among Multicultural Populations, Alejandro Patricio Yanez
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine if facets of character strengths and psychological well being differentially predicted life satisfaction among four racial groups in a sample of 572 university students. Participants completed assessment instruments measuring character strengths, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction. Regarding character strengths, the following were predictive of life satisfaction: Caucasians, intellectual strengths and emotional strengths; African Americans and Hispanic Americans, theological strengths; and Asian Americans, theological strengths, emotional strengths, and intellectual strengths. Regarding psychological well-being, the following were predictive of life satisfaction: Caucasians, self-acceptance and environmental mastery; African Americans, none of the domains; Hispanic Americans, …

Becoming Phonemically Aware: A Study On The Role Of Assistance In Language Learning, Carey W Roybal-Benson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This was a Sociocultural study of second language learning involving Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky, 1978; & Newman and Holzman, 1993), phonemic awareness (Adams, 1990, Lieberman & Shankweiler, 1985), and dynamic assessment (Campione and Brown, 1987; Feuerstein, 1979; and Budoff, 1987). This inquiry was aimed at understanding how assistance functions in second language learning, uncovering student abilities in collaboration through an L2 dynamic assessment of phonemic awareness, and determining what information is available with an L2 dynamic assessment of phonemic awareness. This investigation illuminated teacher-to-student and student-to-student assistance in assessing/learning a second language during a Dynamic Assessment of L2 …

Changing Economic Incentives In Long-Term Care, R. Tamara Konetzka
Changing Economic Incentives In Long-Term Care, R. Tamara Konetzka
Center for Policy Research
Just as managed care has changed utilization and incentives in other parts of health care, there is a whole set of incentives built around long-term care that really matter. For example, if nursing homes have a financial incentive to hospitalize people with certain health conditions, then in the long run they are not going to develop the programs and invest in the resources to treat those people in the facility. Instead they're going to use those resources to stay in business or to provide other types of care. And while we can assume that policymakers do not create regulations that …
Panel Unit Root Tests And Spatial Dependence, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte
Panel Unit Root Tests And Spatial Dependence, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte
Center for Policy Research
This paper studies the performance of panel unit root tests when spatial effects are present that account for cross-section correlation. Monte Carlo simulations show that there can be considerable size distortions in panel unit root tests when the true specification exhibits spatial error correlation. These tests are applied to a panel data set on net real income from the 1000 largest French communes observed over the period 1985-1998.

"We are in revolutionary situation, no matter how unpopular that word may be. You must understand that in the attempt to correct so many generations of bad faith and cruelty, when it is operating not only in the classroom but in society, you will meet the most fantastic, the most brutal, and the most deter-mined resistance."

Predominately White institutions of higher education have focused a considerable amount of attention on the underrepresentation of African American and other ethnically diverse students in colleges and universities. To address this problem, colleges and universities have focused not just on recruitment but also on the retention of African American students in these predominately White institutions. They have recognized that efforts to address underrepresentation cannot be limited to recruitment efforts; they must also consider factors associated with retention in the underrepresentation equation. We contend that gifted education embodies many of the same attributes, challenges, and barriers that predominately White colleges and …

The following paper presents the findings from an evaluative research project that investigated the merits and challenges of an academic bridge program between Milwaukee Public School high school students and the University of Wisconsin Madison. Using a mixed-method design, the researchers focused on evaluating the three-week writing workshops held during the first two summers of the program. Data were collected from students who had already taken the workshops and currently are enrolled at the university. The analysis reflects needed alterations in the program as well as political and educational struggles indicative of large urban districts that are beyond the scope …
Pedagogy Of Respect: The Inter-Generational Influence Of Black Women, Kenneth J. Fasching-Varner
Pedagogy Of Respect: The Inter-Generational Influence Of Black Women, Kenneth J. Fasching-Varner
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
There is a large corpus of literature that not only speaks to the nature and qualities of Black women teachers, but that further disrupts the way these educators have been historically located at the margins of 'education,' by highlighting their political and culturally relevant/responsive approaches (Ladson- Billings, 1992/1994/2000; Gay, 2000; Beauboeuf-Lafontant, 1997/1999/2002; Irvine, 1989/1990/2003; Irvine & Hill, 1990; Collins, 2000; Siddle Walker, 1996/2005; Dixson, 2002/2005; Dingus, 2003, among others). This work, that looks at the larger political movement of Black women teachers, comes at a time when researchers are beginning to better blur the traditional boundaries that defined ‘center’ and …

Was Busing The Problem?, Joseph Watras
Was Busing The Problem?, Joseph Watras
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
On 15 April 2002, the Dayton Board of Education, the Ohio State Department of Education, and the NAACP reached an agreement ending busing for racial balance in the city schools. Participants agreed that the era for litigated desegregation was over because busing had failed to raise academic achievement of African American children and court ordered racial balance caused white families to move to the suburbs. While this picture of racial desegregation fueled efforts to enhance the education of Dayton youth, it disguised the cause of the suburban sprawl that was endangering the region.

The Statistically Significant Exact Replication Method: A Programming And Conceptual Extension, David A. Walker
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The purpose of this article was to extend the research pertaining to the idea of a statistically significant exact replication (SSER) method published recently in the Mid-Western Educational Researcher. The current study continues the idea of SSER and provides researchers with a software program that will calculate easily the SSER value when there is a statistically significant finding, via an independent samples t-test, to assist in determining the chance that an exact replication will be statistically significant beyond 50%. This article also presents an expansion of the SSER concept to the one-way analysis of variance.

Community, Collaboration, And Creativity: The Potential Of Art Education To Create Change, Sandra Spickard Prettyman, Elisa B. Gargarella
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The authors used qualitative methods to examine a high school summer arts program in the Midwest, and researched how the program promotes the creative and aesthetic development of students and teachers, as well as an appreciation for cultural and environmental diversity and conservation. We argue the program provides a space, both physical and emotional, where students could come together, recognize the power of community and collaboration in their lives, and engage in powerful creative work. This experience helped them recognize their own responsibility in creating cultural, environmental, and social awareness and change, and moved them toward becoming change agents in …

Multi-Context Use Of Language: Toward Effective Thinking And Planning For Curriculum, Anne D'Antonio Stinson, William Chandler, M. Virginia Epps, Melissa Frieberg
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The flexible, multi-contextual use of language is essential to integrated learning and thinking. Likewise, learning and thinking in an integrated way is essential to multi-dimensional teaching. This study examines the ways pre-service secondary teachers define their subjects. Students enrolled in a secondary reading methods course were asked to provide multiple definitions for a predetermined list of critical vocabulary terms common to multiple disciplines. We used these definitions to measure participants’ level of sophistication with regard to the multi-context use of language. Participants’ responses illuminated implications for curriculum development in secondary schools including the need for models for pre- and in-service …
Explaining Import Variety And Quality: The Role Of The Income Distribution, Yo Chul Choi, David Hummels, Chong Xiang
Explaining Import Variety And Quality: The Role Of The Income Distribution, Yo Chul Choi, David Hummels, Chong Xiang
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
We examine a generalized version of Flam and Helpman’s (1987) model of vertical differentiation that maps cross-country differences in income distributions to variations in import variety and price distributions. The theoretical predictions are examined and confirmed using micro data on income from the Luxemburg Income Study for 30 countries over 20 years. The pairs of importers whose income distributions look more similar have more export partners in common and more similar import price distributions. Similarly, the importers whose income distributions look more like the world buy from more exporters and have import price distributions that look more like the world.

In this paper I identify new goods in U.S. imports data at the product levels of 7-digit TSUSA or 10-digit HS codes. I show that consistent with product cycles, the North’s new goods exports relative to old goods exports grow faster than the South’s, and then the South catches up with the North. The catch-up takes 13 ~ 18 years and happens in the 1990s, an age of globalization and outsourcing. Since the double difference includes old goods exports within the same 4-digit mSIC industry as controls, the evidence is not tainted by the myriad forces that also affect the …

Equity Returns At The Turn Of The Month, John J. Mcconnell, Wei Xu
Equity Returns At The Turn Of The Month, John J. Mcconnell, Wei Xu
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
A turn-of-the-month effect in U.S. equity returns was initially identified by Lakonishok and Smidt (1988) using the DJIA for the period 1897-1986. According to the turn-of-the-month effect, equity returns over the interval beginning with the last trading day of the month and ending three days later are significantly higher than over other days. Using CRSP daily returns, we find that the turn-of-the-month effect persists over the more recent interval of 1987-2005: in essence, over this 19-year period (and over the 109-year period of 1897-2005) all of the positive excess market return occurred during the four-day turn-of-the-month interval. Thus, during the …
