Explaining Import Variety And Quality: The Role Of The Income Distribution, Yo Chul Choi, David Hummels, Chong Xiang Jan 2006

Explaining Import Variety And Quality: The Role Of The Income Distribution, Yo Chul Choi, David Hummels, Chong Xiang

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We examine a generalized version of Flam and Helpman’s (1987) model of vertical differentiation that maps cross-country differences in income distributions to variations in import variety and price distributions. The theoretical predictions are examined and confirmed using micro data on income from the Luxemburg Income Study for 30 countries over 20 years. The pairs of importers whose income distributions look more similar have more export partners in common and more similar import price distributions. Similarly, the importers whose income distributions look more like the world buy from more exporters and have import price distributions that look more like the world.

How Long Are Product Cycles? , Chong Xiang Jan 2006

How Long Are Product Cycles? , Chong Xiang

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In this paper I identify new goods in U.S. imports data at the product levels of 7-digit TSUSA or 10-digit HS codes. I show that consistent with product cycles, the North’s new goods exports relative to old goods exports grow faster than the South’s, and then the South catches up with the North. The catch-up takes 13 ~ 18 years and happens in the 1990s, an age of globalization and outsourcing. Since the double difference includes old goods exports within the same 4-digit mSIC industry as controls, the evidence is not tainted by the myriad forces that also affect the …

Purpose – To discuss (a) the concept of cross-cultural social intelligence (CCSI), (b) its relevance for both selecting and developing expatriates and other employees working in crosscultural contexts, (c) the development of a situational judgment test to assess CCSI, and (d) practical “lessons learned” in each of these areas. In addition, this instrument is offered (free-of-charge) to any interested managers or HR practitioners. Design/methodology/approach – The four phases of the development and validation of the CCSI measure (using a total of 184 cross-cultural SMEs) were developing (a) the scenarios and (b) the response alternatives, (c) the content analysis, and (d) …

Equity Returns At The Turn Of The Month, John J. Mcconnell, Wei Xu Jan 2006

Equity Returns At The Turn Of The Month, John J. Mcconnell, Wei Xu

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

A turn-of-the-month effect in U.S. equity returns was initially identified by Lakonishok and Smidt (1988) using the DJIA for the period 1897-1986. According to the turn-of-the-month effect, equity returns over the interval beginning with the last trading day of the month and ending three days later are significantly higher than over other days. Using CRSP daily returns, we find that the turn-of-the-month effect persists over the more recent interval of 1987-2005: in essence, over this 19-year period (and over the 109-year period of 1897-2005) all of the positive excess market return occurred during the four-day turn-of-the-month interval. Thus, during the …

Effects Of Dissolved Air On Subcooled Flow Boiling Of A Dielectric Coolant In A Microchannel Heat Sink, T. Chen, S V. Garimella Jan 2006

Effects Of Dissolved Air On Subcooled Flow Boiling Of A Dielectric Coolant In A Microchannel Heat Sink, T. Chen, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

The effects of dissolved air in the dielectric liquid FC-77 on flow boiling in a microchannel heat sink containing ten parallel channels, each 500 mircometers wide and 2.5 mm deep, were experimentally investigated. Experiments were conducted before and after degassing, at three flow rates in the range of 30–50 ml/min. The dissolved air resulted in a significant reduction in wall temperature at which bubbles were first observed in the microchannels. Analysis of the results suggests that the bubbles observed initially in the undegassed liquid were most likely air bubbles. Once the boiling process is initiated, the wall temperature continues to …

Teaching Reflective Lawyering In A Small Case Litigation Clinic: A Love Letter To My Clinic Papers Presented At The Ucla/Ials Conference On Enriching Clinical Education, Ian Weinstein

Faculty Scholarship

This article describes a live client, small case, teaching and learning centered, criminal defense clinic set in a high volume urban court. It offers concrete suggestions about how clinical educators can help students develop analytic and technical skills. The clinic model is conceived in three phases: giving students the opportunity to develop a contextualized understanding of the client; guiding students through strategic analysis and planning; and focusing students' litigation strategies on executing their tactical vision for their client. The article argues that this clinical setting structures the students' experiences so that they develop a complex and deeply moral lawyerly problem …

Continued Vitality Of Structured Sentencing Following Blakely: The Effectiveness Of Voluntary Guidelines, The , John F. Pfaff Jan 2006

Continued Vitality Of Structured Sentencing Following Blakely: The Effectiveness Of Voluntary Guidelines, The , John F. Pfaff

Faculty Scholarship

In two recent opinions, Blakely v. Washington and United States v. Booker, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively invalidated the binding nature of sentencing guidelines used by many states and the federal government over the past thirty years. Not surprisingly, numerous commentators have asserted that Blakely and Booker profoundly altered the nature of sentencing in the United States. But these claims have been made without any meaningful empirical consideration of whether viable alternatives exist. This Article fills that gap. It explores the extent to which voluntary, nonbinding criminal sentencing guidelines influence the sentencing behavior of state trial judges. In particular, it …

City As An Ecological Space: Social Capital And Urban Land Use, The , Sheila R. Foster Jan 2006

City As An Ecological Space: Social Capital And Urban Land Use, The , Sheila R. Foster

Faculty Scholarship

One of the goals of land use (and pollution control) law is to force the internalization of these costs. This otherwise economic view of land use law is also rooted, however, in an ecological understanding of urban land use. Legal scholars writing over three decades ago successfully argued, based upon the ecological facts of life, that "[p]roperty does not exist in isolation" because the effects of its uses flow outside of the boundaries of ownership. The notion that property is inextricably part of a network of social and economic relationships, and that its impacts traverse legally defined boundaries and relationships, …

Court-Ordered Confidentiality In Discovery Symposium: Secrecy In Litigation: I: Article, Howard M. Erichson

Faculty Scholarship

The debate over discovery confidentiality has raged for over twenty years, since before the Supreme Court's decision in Seattle Times Co. v. Rhinehart, and it shows no sign of fading. If anything, issues of litigation confidentiality appear to have gained increased attention in recent years. The United States District Court for the District of South Carolina attracted nationwide attention in 2002 when it adopted a local rule severely restricting secret settlements and addressing other aspects of court-ordered confidentiality. In 2004 the Federal Judicial Center completed an empirical study of sealed settlements. It seems that each month of 2005 brought new …

Characterization And Interpretation Of The Cephalopod Marker Bed, Oakes Quarry Park, Fairborn, Ohio, Jessica Nicole Mcdonough

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A distinct sequence of orange-brown, fossiliferous grainstones with interbedded blue mudstones exists in the upper portion of the Silurian-aged (Llandoverian) Brassfield Formation exposure at Oakes Quarry Park, Fairborn, Ohio. The unit is locally referred to as the cephalopod marker bed as it can be easily identified and is continuous throughout the quarry. The unit varies considerably in thickness (0.3m-0.9m) and contains a variety of sedimentary structures and fossils indicative of a warm, shallow marine environment subject to wave action. Dominant fossils within the unit include echinoderms, cephalopods, bryozoans, abraded mollusks, gastropods, brachiopods, and trilobites. Less-common fossil organisms within the unit …

An (R,S)-Inventory Policy For Winter Maintenance Materials For The State Of Ohio, Nicholas Andrew Brown

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Winters in Ohio mean snow and ice, and with snow and ice come treacherous roads. Roads that become treacherous or impassable cost the state economically and socially. Thus to prevent this from happening road crews are out spreading salt on the roads before, during, and after a storm to promote safe travel. To provide the amount of salt needed to all counties of Ohio; individual counties stock up during the summer and fall, re-order to maintain inventory through the winter time, and finally allowing inventories to reduce towards the end of winter. During a mild winter salt not used and …

Richard Nixon, Détente, And The Conservative Movement, 1969-1974, Eric Patrick Gilliland

This work examines the relationship between President Richard Nixon and the American conservative movement, 1969-1974. Nixon's anti-communist persona proved pivotal in winning the 1968 Republican nomination, with support from the party's consevative base. The foreign policies orcherstrated by Nixon and his National Security Advisor, Henry Kissinger, however, which sought to reduce tensions with China and the Soviet Union, infuriated the conservatives. In 1971-1972, they suspended their support of the administration and even drafted their own candidate, the Ohio congressman, John Ashbrook, to challenge Nixon in the 1972 primary campaign. Although the Ashbrook campaign had a minimal impact, it set a …

Check Clearing For The 21st Century Act - A Wrong Turn In The Road To Improvement Of The U.S. Payments System, The , Carl Felsenfeld, Genci Bilali

Faculty Scholarship

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act' (Check 21 Act) was introduced to Congress by the Federal Reserve System, enacted by Congress, signed by the President on October 28, 2003, and became effective one year later, on October 28, 2004. It makes a modest change in the check-clearing system designed to speed the movement of checks from the depositary to the paying bank. It is anticipated that it will eventually lead to what is called "electronic presentment," a process that may make the clearing of checks almost as swift as to- day's electronic payment systems. This Article gives the …

Dominant Shareholders, Corporate Boards And Corporate Value: A Cross-Country Analysis, Jay Dahya, Orlin Dimitrov, John J. Mcconnell Jan 2006

Dominant Shareholders, Corporate Boards And Corporate Value: A Cross-Country Analysis, Jay Dahya, Orlin Dimitrov, John J. Mcconnell

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We investigate the relation between corporate value and the fraction of independent directors in 799 firms with a dominant shareholder across 22 countries. We find a positive relation, especially in countries with weak legal protection for shareholders. The findings suggest that a dominant shareholder, were he so inclined, could offset, at least in part, the documented value discount associated with weak country-level shareholder protection by appointing an ‘independent’ board. The cost to the dominant shareholder of doing so is the loss in perquisites associated with being a dominant shareholder. Thus, not all dominant shareholders will choose independent boards.

How Strong Is The Love Of Variety?, Adina Ardelean Jan 2006

How Strong Is The Love Of Variety?, Adina Ardelean

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Models with monopolistic competition and constant elasticity of substitution (CES) preferences have become a mainstay of theoretical and empirical work in international trade. However, the standard model yields contrafactual predictions on the number of varieties, prices and output per variety that are traded. In particular the model predicts a rate of variety growth that is faster than that observed in the data. This paper develops and tests a model with a more general, but still tractable, CES preference structure that nests Krugman (1980) and Armington (1969) style models. With limited love of variety the consumer faces a trade-off between buying …
