Stratospheric Variability And Trends In Models Used For The Ipcc Ar4, P. M. De F. Forster, Eugene Cordero Nov 2006

Stratospheric Variability And Trends In Models Used For The Ipcc Ar4, P. M. De F. Forster, Eugene Cordero

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

Atmosphere and ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) experiments for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) are analyzed to better understand model variability and assess the importance of various forcing mechanisms on stratospheric trends during the 20th century. While models represent the climatology of the stratosphere reasonably well in comparison with NCEP reanalysis, there are biases and large variability among models. In general, AOGCMs are cooler than NCEP throughout the stratosphere, with the largest differences in the tropics. Around half the AOGCMs have a top level beneath ~2 hPa and show a significant cold bias in their …

Estimating Heterogeneous Capacity And Capacity Utilization In A Multi-Species Fishery, Ronald G. Felthoven, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier Nov 2006

Estimating Heterogeneous Capacity And Capacity Utilization In A Multi-Species Fishery, Ronald G. Felthoven, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier

Economics - All Scholarship

We use a stochastic production frontier model to investigate the presence of heterogeneous production and its impact on fleet capacity and capacity utilization in a multi-species fishery. Furthermore, we propose a new fleet capacity estimate that incorporates complete information on the stochastic differences between each vessel-specific technical efficiency distribution. Results indicate that ignoring heterogeneity in production technologies within a multi-species fishery, as well as the complete distribution of a vessel’s technical efficiency score, may yield erroneous fleet-wide production profiles and estimates of capacity. Furthermore, our new estimate of capacity enables out-of-sample production predictions predicated on either homogeneity or heterogeneity modeling …

Results indicate that ignoring heterogeneity in production technologies within a multispecies fishery as well as the complete distribution of a vessel’s technical efficiency score, may lead to erroneous fleet-wide production profiles and estimates of capacity. Our new estimate of capacity enables out-of-sample production predictions which may be useful to policy makers.

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Our differential BV photometric observations, acquired with an automated telescope at Fairborn Observatory, show that HD 71636 is an eclipsing binary. From follow-up red-wavelength spectroscopic observations we classify the primary and secondary as an F2 dwarf and an F5 dwarf, respectively. The system has a period of 5.01329 days and a circular orbit. We used the Wilson-Devinney program to simultaneously solve our BV light curves and radial velocities and determined a number of fundamental properties of the system. Comparison with evolutionary tracks indicates that both stars are well ensconced on the main sequence. The age of the system is about …

C-Jun Nh2-Terminal Kinase Promotes Apoptosis By Down-Regulating The Transcriptional Co-Repressor Ctbp, Su-Yan Wang, Mihail Iordanov, Qinghong Zhang

CUP Faculty Research

Genetic knock out of the transcriptional co-repressor carboxyl-terminal-binding protein (CtBP) in mouse embryonic fibroblasts results in up-regulation of several genes involved in apoptosis. We predicted, therefore, that a propensity toward apoptosis might be regulated through changes in cellular CtBP levels. Previously, we have identified the homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2 as such a regulator and demonstrated that HIPK2 activation causes Ser-422 phosphorylation and degradation of CtBP. In this study, we found that c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase 1 activation triggered CtBP phosphorylation on Ser-422 and subsequent degradation, inducing p53-independent apoptosis in human lung cancer cells. JNK1 has previously been linked to …

Physics & Astronomy

[1] We compare global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation results with an empirical model and observations to understand the magnetic field configuration and plasma distribution in the inner magnetosphere, especially during geomagnetic storms. The physics-based Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) code simulates Earth's magnetospheric topology and dynamics by solving the equations of ideal MHD. Quantitative comparisons of simulated events with observations reveal strengths and possible limitations and suggest ways to improve the LFM code. Here we present a case study that compares the LFM code to both a semiempirical magnetic field model and to geosynchronous measurements from GOES satellites. During a magnetic cloud event, the …

Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group

We summarize the theory and modeling efforts for the STEREO mission, which will be used to interpret the data of both the remote-sensing (SECCHI, SWAVES) and in-situ instruments (IMPACT, PLASTIC). The modeling includes the coronal plasma, in both open and closed magnetic structures, and the solar wind and its expansion outwards from the Sun, which defines the heliosphere. Particular emphasis is given to modeling of dynamic phenomena associated with the initiation and propagation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The modeling of the CME initiation includes magnetic shearing, kink instability, filament eruption, and magnetic reconnection in the flaring lower corona. The …

Opposing The Lottery In The U.S.: The Forces Behind Individual Attitudes Towards Legalization In 1975, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

In the 1970s, opposition to the lottery started to fracture in the US. This study examines causes of the fracture and historical factors that contributed to changes in individual attitudes towards legalization. The opponents at the time held to traditional arguments against legalized lotteries—negative economic effects, costs to others and increased crime. Unlike in the past, however, there was weak religious institutional opposition to lotteries. Individuals with a strong commitment to their religious affiliation were more resistant to pro-lottery arguments, but in most cases could be convinced to support the lottery. The pre-World War II generation remained steadfast against the …

Rosenberg On Causation, Jennifer Mckitrick Nov 2006

Rosenberg On Causation, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

This paper is an explication and critique of a new theory of causation found in part II of Gregg Rosenberg's A Place for Consciousness. According to Rosenberg's Theory of Causal significance, causation constrains indeterminate possibilities, and according to his Carrier Theory, physical properties are dispositions which have phenomenal properties as their causal bases. This author finds Rosenberg's metaphysics excessively speculative, with disappointing implications for the place of consciousness in the natural world.

The Changing Structure Of Arkansas' Economy: A Shift-Share Analysis, Biswaranjan Das, Daniel V. Rainey

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

The state of Arkansas enjoys the advantages of its unique central location in the nation, excellent natural surroundings, low cost of living, and one of the best business climates in the southern United States. It is home to several of the largest corporations in the world. Over the period 1980-2000, there was tremendous growth in the state’s economy. However, the growth was confined to specific regions that led to several socio-economic issues adversely affecting the state. To better understand the components and variations in economic growth, a county-wise shift-share analysis was conducted. Employment, a good indicator of economic growth, was …

Scarab Beetles In Human Culture, Brett C. Ratcliffe Nov 2006

Scarab Beetles In Human Culture, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The use of scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) by primarily pre- and non-industrial peoples throughout the world is reviewed. These uses consist of (1) religion and folklore, (2) folk medicine, (3) food, and (4) regalia and body ornamentation. The use of scarabs in religion or cosmology, once widespread in ancient Egypt, exists only rarely today in other cultures. Scarabs have a minor role in folk medicine today although they may have been more important in the past. The predominant utilization of these beetles today, and probably in the past as well, is as food with emphasis on the larval stage. Lastly, …

Geographic Adventures: An Interdisciplinary Fourth Grade Geography Unit, Janet Campbell Nov 2006

Geographic Adventures: An Interdisciplinary Fourth Grade Geography Unit, Janet Campbell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The need for increased geographic literacy in an age of globalization and the decline in geographic literacy among people in the United States have created an educational challenge that should be addressed aggressively in the K-12 curriculum. One roadblock to improvement of geographic instruction is the subject centered instruction designed to accommodate standardized testing. The isolation of subject materials in the educational process limits students' understanding and topic relevance. Canatsey (1999) suggested that the study of geography can create relationships among multiple subjects and that the resulting connections lead to a greater understanding of geography, as well as the other …
