Decoherence And Recoherence In A Vibrating Rf Squid, Eyal Buks, M. P. Blencowe
Decoherence And Recoherence In A Vibrating Rf Squid, Eyal Buks, M. P. Blencowe
Dartmouth Scholarship
We study an rf SQUID, in which a section of the loop is a freely suspended beam that is allowed to oscillate mechanically. The coupling between the rf SQUID and the mechanical resonator originates from the dependence of the total magnetic flux threading the loop on the displacement of the resonator. Motion of the latter affects the visibility of Rabi oscillations between the two lowest energy states of the rf SQUID. We address the feasibility of experimental observation of decoherence and recoherence, namely decay and rise of the visibility, in such a system.

An Examination Of Conflict Conversation In An Online Community: The Pie Fight At Dailykos.Com, Samantha Isabella Soma
Dissertations and Theses
The increasing popularity of the social web and online communities requires the attention of researchers of conflict resolution. Although there are many ways to resolve conflict offline, the ways in which conflict takes place within a native online context have not been much studied. Are any of the tools and strategies that are used to improve communication offline used successfully online, or are some other strategies taking their place? What communication patterns occur within an online community equipped with comment moderation capabilities? This research is a case study and addressed these questions by performing a qualitative analysis of comment conversations …

Preparing Engineers For The Global Workplace, John M. Grandin
Preparing Engineers For The Global Workplace, John M. Grandin
Online Journal for Global Engineering Education
The University of Rhode Island takes pride in the fact that 20% of its undergraduate engineering students complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in German, French or Spanish (and soon Chinese) along with their BS engineering degree. Its distinctive International Engineering Program (IEP) is characterized by the two degrees, but also by the fact that each IEP student spends the fourth year of the five-year curriculum abroad, completing a semester of study at a partner university and a six-month internship with affiliated global companies. Over 200 undergraduates have completed the IEP curriculum, which is now well institutionalized in the culture …

Engineering The Future: Staying Competitive In The Global Economy, Paul A. Camuti
Online Journal for Global Engineering Education
Maintaining and bolstering America's position as an innovation and technology leader requires aggressive, progressive and creative curricular changes in engineering education. Preparing future engineers in the Age of Globalization requires additional skill sets beyond traditional technical capabilities, drawn from the humanities, social sciences and, above all, foreign languages. The author discusses how Siemens Corporation has been navigating the opportunities and pitfalls presented by globalization by seeking out and developing "Renaissance Engineers."
Fighting Corruption Through Regional And International Conventions: A Satisfactory Solution?, Indira M. Carr
Fighting Corruption Through Regional And International Conventions: A Satisfactory Solution?, Indira M. Carr
ExpressO
While considering the current legal frameworks adopted by the regional and international anti-corruption conventions this article aims to show (1) that the lack of a unified approach is unlikely to further the fight against corruption in any meaningful way, (2) that regulation is unlikely to be efficient results unless there are robust enforcement mechanisms in place, and (3) that anti-corruption legislation provides only a partial answer and that we need to engage in what I call a process of re-socialization. Part 2 (How Widespread is Corruption?) critically assesses the methodology adopted by Transparency International (TI) for compiling its perception index. …

Yes, Virginia: The President Can Deploy Federal Troops To Prevent The Loss Of A Major American City From A Devastating Natural Catastrophe, Michael Greenberger
Faculty Scholarship
As a direct response to the lackadaisical and much criticized federal handling of Hurricane Katrina, a critical provision within the Fiscal Year 2007 Defense Authorization Act amended in October 2006 the Insurrection Act to allow the President to deploy Federal troops to respond to catastrophic natural disasters and other major domestic emergencies without a prior request from affected state or local governments. This amendment was passed over universal and bipartisan opposition by the Nation's governors, all of whom claimed that this provision upends the delicate balance between Federal and state responsibilities for responding to natural disasters. In fact, this amendment …

This brief describes the changes, the impetus for their consideration, and possible implementation issues from the perspectives of vendors, state and local WIC agencies, and participants.

In the City of Lincoln, Nebraska, there has been a recent proposal to develop a new arena facility for this growing City. The following report addresses some of the economic consequences of developing a new arena in Lincoln. In particular, the report estimates the potential economic impact of the proposed project, that is, …
