Trends In Usage Of Ct In The Early Detection And Diagnosis Of Adnexal Torsion, Juliana Capatosto Nov 2006

Trends In Usage Of Ct In The Early Detection And Diagnosis Of Adnexal Torsion, Juliana Capatosto

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Ovarian torsion (OT) is frequently considered in the differential diagnosis of women presenting to the ED with pelvic pain, but is a relatively uncommon occurrence. While ultrasound is considered the test of choice for OT, CT may be used as an initial imaging study with undifferentiated pelvic pain. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of CT used in the diagnostic evaluation of women with proven OT. We hypothesized that all CTs of the pelvis in women with proven OT would be abnormal. This was a retrospective chart review from 500 bed urban teaching hospital. Patients were …

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Polymorphisms And Invasive Streptoccus Pneumoniae Infections, Sarah Beth Doernberg Nov 2006

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Polymorphisms And Invasive Streptoccus Pneumoniae Infections, Sarah Beth Doernberg

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Streptococcus pneumoniae[italicized everytime] (S. pneumoniae) causes a spectrum of disease severity, and human host factors likely play a role in this variation. One candidate factor is macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), a pro-inflammatory cytokine and upstream regulator of innate immunity. The MIF[italicized when not in parenthesis] promoter contains two functional polymorphisms, a tetranucleotide (CATT) repeat such that MIF expression increases with repeat number from 5-8 and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) leading to a G-to-C transition, which results in increased MIF expression in cell line reporter assays. Emerging data suggest an association between high-expression MIF alleles and inflammatory disease. This …

Bird And Other Wildlife Hazards At Airports: Liability Issues For Airport Managers, Richard A. Dolbeer Nov 2006

Bird And Other Wildlife Hazards At Airports: Liability Issues For Airport Managers, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Aircraft collisions with birds (bird strikes) and other wildlife are a serious economic and safety problem. The problem has increased in the past decade because of expanding populations of many wildlife species that are hazardous to aviation (Dolbeer and Eschenfelder 2002). Cleary et al. (2004) estimated wildlife strikes (98% involving birds) cost the civil aviation industry in the USA about $500 million/year, 1990-2003. Allan and Orosz (2001) estimated that bird strikes annually cost commercial air carriers over $1.2 billion worldwide, 1999-2000. At least 194 people died and 164 aircraft were destroyed as a result of bird and other wildlife strikes …

Sub-Typing Of Prrsv Isolates By Means Of Measurement Of Cross-Neutralization Reactions, Fernando A. Osorio Nov 2006

Sub-Typing Of Prrsv Isolates By Means Of Measurement Of Cross-Neutralization Reactions, Fernando A. Osorio

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The degree of similitude or closeness between two different isolates or strains of PRRSV is very important for deciding which strains should be used for immunization, by either vaccinating with commercial vaccines or attempting to stabilize a herd with planned wt PRRSV infection. As previously known for certain important viral diseases, such as in Foot and Mouth Disease, the reciprocal (cross-) neutralization titers between two strains may be of utmost importance to establish the degree of similarity or difference between these. There is currently a void of methods that would allow distinguishing or grouping strains of PRRSV in a manner …

Α,Ω-Dithiol Oligo(Phenylene Vinylene)S For The Preparation Of High-Quality Π-Conjugated Self-Assembled Monolayers And Nanoparticle-Functionalized Electrodes, Dwight S. Seferos, Rebecca Lai, Kevin W. Plaxco, Guillermo C. Bazan Nov 2006

Α,Ω-Dithiol Oligo(Phenylene Vinylene)S For The Preparation Of High-Quality Π-Conjugated Self-Assembled Monolayers And Nanoparticle-Functionalized Electrodes, Dwight S. Seferos, Rebecca Lai, Kevin W. Plaxco, Guillermo C. Bazan

Rebecca Lai Publications

While thioacetate-terminated oligo(phenylene vinylene)s (OPVs) have been synthesized and employed in applications involving the formation of metal–molecule–metal junctions, the synthesis and application of potentially more versatile α,ω-dithiol OPVs have not previously been described. Here, a thiomethyl-precursor route to the synthesis of α,ω-dithiol OPVs is reported and their ability to form well-ordered self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) without the addition of exogenous deprotection reagents is described. α,ω-Dithiol OPV monolayers exhibit thicknesses consistent with molecular length and are nearly defect-free, as assayed by electrochemical measurements. To demonstrate the ease with which SAMs containing these bifunctional OPVs can, in contrast to thioacetate functionalized OPVs, be …
