Astronomical Multi-Object Spectroscopy With A Liquid Crystal Turnable Filter, David A. Mcinnis
Astronomical Multi-Object Spectroscopy With A Liquid Crystal Turnable Filter, David A. Mcinnis
Theses
Liquid Crystal Tunable Filters are optical devices electronically controlled to alter their passband on demand without involving mechanics. By incorporating such a device into an imaging system, a datacube can be constructed by capturing images while stepping the filter through a series of wavelengths.
In astronomy, continuing improvements in the sensitivity of telescopes and detectors have increased the number of objects available for study far beyond the capabilities of conventional spectroscopic systems to measure them. Instead of collecting spectra a single object at a time, research into multi-object spectroscopy solutions, the ability to examine many objects simultaneously, is the current …

Comparative Rates Of Ndna Degradation Using Rat Models In Southeastern Tennessee, Matthew F. Pullen
Comparative Rates Of Ndna Degradation Using Rat Models In Southeastern Tennessee, Matthew F. Pullen
Honors Theses
The advent of DNA identification methods has revolutionized forensic science. It is now possible to identify criminals from trace evidence, eliminate false leads, and discover the identity of a deceased individual long after their death. As DNA plays such important roles in criminal investigatious, determining the quality of DNA due to its exposure time enviroment is imperative. This experiment seeks to help narrow down the time frame that useful nuclear DNA (nDNA) can be extracted from a decaying body. The rate of DNA degradation was measured in Sprague-Dawlwy rat models placed in varied environmnts of Southeastern Tennessee. The environments included …

Defining The Components Of Academic Self-Efficacy In Navajo American Indian High School Students, Thomas R. Golightly
Defining The Components Of Academic Self-Efficacy In Navajo American Indian High School Students, Thomas R. Golightly
Theses and Dissertations
The academic difficulties experienced by a majority of Navajo American Indian students are well documented. Past research has focused on a variety of internal and external factors which possibly explain some of these difficulties. Low levels of academic self-efficacy (ASE) has been identified as one of the factors possibly contributing to lower than expected rates of academic achievement and low post-secondary education retention rates in this population. This investigation sought to further define the component structures of ASE using theoretical structures postulated by Bandura (1977a, 1997), namely: past success, modeling, verbal persuasion, and emotional arousal. Information about grade point averages …
Graded Interface Models For More Accurate Determination Of Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interactions Across Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French
Graded Interface Models For More Accurate Determination Of Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interactions Across Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French
Faculty Scholarship
Attractive van der Waals–London dispersion interactions between two half crystals arise from local physical property gradients within the interface layer separating the crystals. Hamaker coefficients and London dispersion energies were quantitatively determined for Σ5 and near-∑13 grain boundaries in SrTiO3 by analysis of spatially resolved valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) data. From the experimental data, local complex dielectric functions were determined, from which optical properties can be locally analyzed. Both local electronic structures and optical properties revealed gradients within the grain boundary cores of both investigated interfaces. The results show that even in the presence of atomically structured grain boundary …

The Biology Of Introduced Norway Rats On Kiska Island, Alaska, And An Evaluation Of An Eradication Approach, Gary W. Witmer, Patrick Burke, Susan Jojola, Peter Dunlevy
The Biology Of Introduced Norway Rats On Kiska Island, Alaska, And An Evaluation Of An Eradication Approach, Gary W. Witmer, Patrick Burke, Susan Jojola, Peter Dunlevy
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Introduced, invasive rats can cause substantial damage to native flora and fauna, including ground-nesting seabirds, when they become established on islands. We tested a control method for introduced Norway rats on Kiska Island, Alaska, during April-May, 2004, by hand-broadcasting rodenticide pellets (0.005% diaphacinone) over a 4-ha area at the rate of 28 kg/ha. We also gathered data on aspects of rat ecology and distribution, although rats were difficult to detect and capture. The rodenticide bait pellets seemed to have been effective in reducing the Norway rat population, however, this is based on a limited observation of rat sign and captures. …

The Internet has marked this era as the information age. There is no precedent in the amazing amount of information, especially network news, that can be accessed by Internet users these days. As a result, the problem of seeking information in online news articles is not the lack of them but being overwhelmed by them. This brings huge challenges in processing online news feeds, e.g., how to determine which news article is important, how to determine the quality of each news article, and how to filter irrelevant and redundant information. In this paper, we propose a method for filtering redundant …
