Social Learning Theory As A Model For Illegitimate Peer-To-Peer Use And The Effects Of Implementing A Legal Music Downloading Service On Peer-To-Peer Music Piracy, Nathan Fisk Nov 2006

Social Learning Theory As A Model For Illegitimate Peer-To-Peer Use And The Effects Of Implementing A Legal Music Downloading Service On Peer-To-Peer Music Piracy, Nathan Fisk

Theses

In an attempt to both provide added services to students and help curb the growing problem of music piracy on college campuses, many universities have implemented legal digital music services. The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was one of these universities, where the Cdigix Ctrax service is provided to students. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of such a strategy, Information Technology Services (ITS) at RIT requested the services of Dr. Samuel McQuade, who administered a Webbased survey to all Ctrax users and an equal number of randomly selected non-Ctrax using students at RIT. In total, 447 students responded to …

Awakening Days At Dead River, Edward Curry Woodward Nov 2006

Awakening Days At Dead River, Edward Curry Woodward

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Awakening Days at Dead River traces the history of a remote public park in north Hillsborough County that was once a privately-owned riverside enclave with modest cabins, and home to a popular fish camp on the Hillsborough River. The timeframe focuses on the mid-twentieth century to present, with a contextual background of earlier history in the immediate area. The story recounts the adventures and challenges of a select group of homeowners and visitors who experienced life on the Hillsborough and Dead Rivers during that timeframe. It also shows how the area evolved into a public property when regional flood control …

Compensation For Property Under The European Convention On Human Rights, Tom Allen Nov 2006

Compensation For Property Under The European Convention On Human Rights, Tom Allen

ExpressO

This Article investigates the nature of the right to property guaranteed under the First Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights ('P1-1'). It argues that the European Court of Human Rights has been torn between two theories of the right to property. The first is the "integrated theory", and it holds that the right to property shares common values and purposes with other Convention rights. Hence, the interpretation of P1-1 should reflect principles developed in the interpretation of other Convention rights. It is argued that the application of the integrated theory should support a "social model" of property. The …

Have Absolute Price Levels Converged For Developed Economies? The Evidence Since 1870, Lein-Lein Chen, Seungmook Choi, John Devereux Nov 2006

Have Absolute Price Levels Converged For Developed Economies? The Evidence Since 1870, Lein-Lein Chen, Seungmook Choi, John Devereux

CRIF Working Paper series

We compare price level and income convergence since 1870 for eleven developed economies using implicit price deflators derived from the GDP data of Maddison (1995, 2001 and 2003). We find that “sigma” and “beta” convergence for prices occurs later and to a lesser extent than income. Price levels converge after 1950 while income convergence begins in the 1880’s. We find no evidence for stochastic convergence or for “club” price convergence. JEL codes F3, F4.

Earth and Soil Sciences

The presence of large quantities of Chromium metal in soil and plants is of major concern due to its toxicity to humans. Total (USEPA 3050a) and bioavailable (USEPA 1311) levels of chromium were measured along a serpentinic Central Coast toposequence. Soil from the surface and subsurface, as well as the above ground plants of the toposequence were determined and compared to several soil chemical and physical properties using a least squares regression. The binding environments and oxidation states were found through XANES and EXAFS x-ray spectroscopies. The total and bioavailable chromium concentrations of the soil averaged 1457.1 and 1.6 mg …

Sequential Extraction Of Copper And Zinc From Two Californian Soils, Katharine Carr, Christopher Appel, Craig Stubler, Shana Mccarthy Nov 2006

Sequential Extraction Of Copper And Zinc From Two Californian Soils, Katharine Carr, Christopher Appel, Craig Stubler, Shana Mccarthy

Earth and Soil Sciences

In order to understand how to remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals, it is important to first understand their sorption mechanisms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioavailability of elevated levels of soil copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) via sequential extraction. Elevated levels of Cu and Zn were added separately and concurrently to a Mollisol and an Entisol from the central coast of California. The exchangeable amount of Cu and Zn was then extracted from the sorbed amount via 0.1 M NaNO3. The residual fraction was then extracted with 0.1 M sodium citrate (NaC6 …

Modeling Heterogeneous User Churn And Local Resilience Of Unstructured P2p Networks, Zhongmei Yao, Derek Leonard, Dmitri Loguinov, Xiaoming Wang Nov 2006

Modeling Heterogeneous User Churn And Local Resilience Of Unstructured P2p Networks, Zhongmei Yao, Derek Leonard, Dmitri Loguinov, Xiaoming Wang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Previous analytical results on the resilience of unstructured P2P systems have not explicitly modeled heterogeneity of user churn (i.e., difference in online behavior) or the impact of in-degree on system resilience. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a generic model of heterogeneous user churn, derive the distribution of the various metrics observed in prior experimental studies (e.g., lifetime distribution of joining users, joint distribution of session time of alive peers, and residual lifetime of a randomly selected user), derive several closed-form results on the transient behavior of in-degree, and eventually obtain the joint in/out degree isolation probability as a simple …

Balanced Biorthogonal Scaling Vectors Using Fractal Function Macroelements On [0,1], Bruce Kessler Nov 2006

Balanced Biorthogonal Scaling Vectors Using Fractal Function Macroelements On [0,1], Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Geronimo, Hardin, et al have previously constructed orthogonal and biorthogonal scaling vectors by extending a spline scaling vector with functions supported on $[0,1]$. Many of these constructions occurred before the concept of balanced scaling vectors was introduced. This paper will show that adding functions on $[0,1]$ is insufficient for extending spline scaling vectors to scaling vectors that are both orthogonal and balanced. We are able, however, to use this technique to extend spline scaling vectors to balanced, biorthogonal scaling vectors, and we provide two large classes of this type of scaling vector, with approximation order two and three, respectively, with …
