Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch
Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch
Theses and Dissertations
Persistence is the ability of a small fraction of bacteria (one-in-a-million) to survive antibiotic exposure, yet the survivors are as susceptible to antibiotic as the parental cells. "High persistence" in Escherichia coli is linked to mutations in hipA, the toxin entity of the toxin-antitoxin module hipBA. The wild type hipA gene encodes a "toxin" while hipB encodes a DNA-binding protein that autoregulates hip operon expression and binds to HipA to nullify its effects. The hipA7 allele confers persistence to 1:100 cells and serves as a model system to study persistence. Wild-type HipA, when in excess of HipB, causes culture growth …
Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Actin Polymerization: Pathophysiological Implications And Relations To Portal Hypertensive Conditions, Xuesong Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Chronic portal hypertension is an end-state clinical condition associated with cirrhosis and other diseases that elevate portal vascular resistance. An intriguing vascular consequence of chronic portal hypertension is impaired vasoconstrictor function which favors a chronically vasodilated condition. This vasoconstrictor dysfunction has been linked to prolonged activation of protein kinase A (PKA). However the cellular mechanism(s) responsible for the altered vasoconstrictor function is still not clear. The present studies tested my hypothesis that PKA mediates impaired vasoconstrictor function by affecting the actin filament dynamics via two small heat shock proteins, HSP20 and HSP27. Studies were conducted in isolated small mesenteric arteries …

The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of three resident teacher/resident mentor pairs in a special education resident teacher program located in a rural Midwest state. The intent of this study was to gain insight into the phenomenon of mentoring as perceived by the resident teachers and resident mentors. Qualitative research methods were used in this phenomenological study, including a brief period of observation, analysis of meeting notes and resident mentor/resident teacher evaluations, and interviews with the three resident mentors and three resident teachers involved in a special education resident teacher program. Data obtained from each participant's …

Many Are The Deceivers, Cassie Worley
Many Are The Deceivers, Cassie Worley
Theses
This thesis examines the adaptations and disseminations of ancient and modern dominant Western Parables. It investigates both Biblical myths and fairy tales, as they are used as socializing tools, which set standards in Western culture, and prescribe conventions to our children. Within the thesis, themes from Little Red Riding Hood will be extrapolated, and compared to those found in Old Testament tales such as, The Expulsion from Eden, the Deluge, The Ten Plagues, and Exodus. Throughout the thesis, the history and function of the myth and fairy tale will be defined, and questions will be raised regarding the role of …

Contingent Fee Lobbying: Inflaming Avarice Or Facilitating Constitutional Rights?, Thomas M. Susman
ExpressO
Contingent fee lobbying has long been a disfavored practice. Although some commentators argue that use of a contingent fee lobbying contract could open up federal legislative and regulatory processes to greater participation by Americans of limited means, many others, including the Supreme Court, have declared that lobbying a legislature or agency under a contingent fee contract is generally both illegal and unethical. However, the conclusion that the practice is illegal is often based on a declaration that the practice is unethical . . . without a thorough examination of the sources of law that led to the presumption of illegality …
