Static From Under The Snow, John Early Nov 2006

Static From Under The Snow, John Early

Theses and Dissertations

Static From Under the Snow, a creative dissertation, is a collection of poems that discusses perceptions of culture and identity. The manuscript employs a framing poem to open this inquiry into how culture produces an identity that isn't always what it appears to be. The narrator invites an unnamed Asian woman (who, as an immigrant, has expressed a desire to be a part of the dominant white, patriarchal culture) to accompany him as he shows her how he became the man he is, and the resultant disappointment and anger. He invites her to listen to the many voices (poems) that …

Laboratory -Induced Aggression Among Participants With And Without A History Of Alcohol -Related Aggression, Matthew D. Bailly Nov 2006

Laboratory -Induced Aggression Among Participants With And Without A History Of Alcohol -Related Aggression, Matthew D. Bailly

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of alcohol-related and mixed alcohol and non-alcohol-related histories of aggression on aggressive responding in the laboratory were investigated using the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP). Forty-five male college students were selected for participation in the present study using a questionnaire consisting of modified items from the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI; Buss & Durkee, 1957) and Overt Aggression Scale (OAS; Yudofsky et al., 1986) that allowed for assignment to an alcohol-related, mixed, or no history of aggression control condition. Participants performed four 25-minute PSAP sessions in sequence during one laboratory visit. The short version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality …

Social Anxiety And The Recognition Of Auditory And Visual Emotional Cues, Ryan D. Hartmann Nov 2006

Social Anxiety And The Recognition Of Auditory And Visual Emotional Cues, Ryan D. Hartmann

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive theory attributes social anxiety to a host of perceptual biases that transform harmless interpersonal stimuli into threats. Socially anxious college students were expected to misinterpret visual and auditory cues of emotion in others more readily than their more confident counterparts. This group of socially anxious men and women were also expected to perceive negative emotion from visual and auditory cues that were determined to be neutral or positive through an external validation process. A total of 16 participants were assigned into each of the four cells of this 2 (gender) by 2 (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale-Self Report median split) …

Expanding Roles: Paraeducators Providing Health Care To Students In Elementary Schools, Sharon Nelson Nov 2006

Expanding Roles: Paraeducators Providing Health Care To Students In Elementary Schools, Sharon Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately ten to thirty percent of school aged children have a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional condition that requires specialized health care and related services. Providing the needed health care is critical in maintaining students' participation and success in school. The enactment of PL 94-142, in 1975, mandated that public schools give children with disabilities the right to a "free and appropriate public education" in the least restrictive environment possible. School nurses are the logical choice to provide the necessary health care in schools. They have the knowledge, expertise, judgement and critical thinking skills inherent in nursing education and …

Beliefs And Values Of K–12 Teachers Underlying The Grading Process In North Dakota Small Rural Schools, Keith H. Gustafson Nov 2006

Beliefs And Values Of K–12 Teachers Underlying The Grading Process In North Dakota Small Rural Schools, Keith H. Gustafson

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that the grades teachers assign to students have been increasing in value, whereas the achievement measured by the grades has remained the same. There is great variability reported in the current literature concerning the grading practices of teachers. There is no consensus about what grades should mean, what reference base should be used for comparability, or the extent to which the grades assigned should correlate with the students' performances on national achievement tests. The purpose of the study was to gather information about general education teachers' beliefs and values regarding the criteria that should be used in …

Validation Of A Quantitative Measure To Assess Schema Content Associated With Social Anxiety, Jennifer R. Brendle Nov 2006

Validation Of A Quantitative Measure To Assess Schema Content Associated With Social Anxiety, Jennifer R. Brendle

Theses and Dissertations

Many cognitive theories of anxiety suggest that anxious individuals are characterized by maladaptive schemata, such that they focus their attention on and make biased interpretations of perceived threat material (e.g., Beck & Emery, 1985, Bower, 1981). In addition, cognitive theories of social phobia, in particular, posit that socially anxious individuals demonstrate attentional and interpretation biases when confronted with signals of social danger or threat as a result of maladaptive schemata (e.g., Beck & Emery, 1985; Clark & Wells, 1995; Rapee & Heimberg, 1997). Although these models all propose that maladaptive schemata result in faulty information processing which leads to the …
