Design Of Novel Experimental Techniques To Investigate The Formation Of Nanoparticle-Based Tribofilms, Corey Thompson Dec 2006

Design Of Novel Experimental Techniques To Investigate The Formation Of Nanoparticle-Based Tribofilms, Corey Thompson

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Nano-engineered lubricant additives such as organically-active nanoparticles of molybdenum disulphide (Hybrid-milled MoS2) are becoming increasingly popular in the fight against harsh friction and wear that occurs during boundary-layer lubrication. A previous paper (Verma, 2007), has reported improvements in both coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter; however, there exists very little data concerning the methods through which this improvement is achieved. Using techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) as well as tribometery, the chemical and mechanical characteristics of the nanoparticle based tribofilm are characterized. …

Information Infrastructure For Integrated Ecohydraulic And Water Resources Modeling And Assessment, R. Wallace, K. Pathak, M. Fife, Norman L. Jones, J. P. Holland, D. Stuart, J. Harris, C. Butler, D. R. Richards Dec 2006

Information Infrastructure For Integrated Ecohydraulic And Water Resources Modeling And Assessment, R. Wallace, K. Pathak, M. Fife, Norman L. Jones, J. P. Holland, D. Stuart, J. Harris, C. Butler, D. R. Richards

Faculty Publications

Watershed management increasingly requires ecohydraulic modeling and assessment within a regional context, rather than on a project-by-project basis. Such holistic modeling and assessment require evaluation capabilities across multiple temporal and spatial scales. Thus, modeling and assessment tools must be integrated in a scientifically and computationally effective infrastructure. The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, in concert with the Hydrologic Engineering Center and its academic partners, including Brigham Young University, is establishing a comprehensive set of hydroinformatics modeling and assessment tools for ecohydraulic and water resources management applications, all linked based on a common data and information infrastructure. This paper …

A Phylogeny Of Belonolaimus Populations In Florida Inferred From Dna Sequences, Byron J. Adams, U. Gozel, K. B. Nguyen, R. N. Inserra, R. M. Giblin-Davis Dec 2006

A Phylogeny Of Belonolaimus Populations In Florida Inferred From Dna Sequences, Byron J. Adams, U. Gozel, K. B. Nguyen, R. N. Inserra, R. M. Giblin-Davis

Faculty Publications

The D2-D3 and ITS regions of rDNA from 33 Florida populations of Belonolaimus spp. were sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. Our objective was to derive a theoretical evolutionary framework for interpreting phenotypic differences as they relate to the taxonomy of the genus. The most striking aspect of the phylogenetic analysis is that none of the three nominal species (B. longicaudatus, B. euthychilus, and B. gracilis) are monophyletic. Additionally, two taxa appear to have discordant ITS and LSU sequences. Three major clades of B. longicaudatus exhibited discernible, overlapping, geographic foci from east to west across the peninsula. Morphological character states …

Decision Support Systems In Product Development: A Batesian Network Approach For Injection-Molded Products, Jason S. Trahan Dec 2006

Decision Support Systems In Product Development: A Batesian Network Approach For Injection-Molded Products, Jason S. Trahan

Dissertations

Attribute defects cause a majority of the scrap for many manufacturers injection-molding aesthetic parts, yet these defects receive little attention duringproduct development. Methods for preventing attribute defects have been hampered by the inability to quantify complex cause-effect relationships. However, the qualities of a burgeoning branch of knowledge-based systems, called Bayesian networks, have benefited various fields faced with similar circumstances.Bayesian networks have the capability of presenting causal relationships between variables in a graphical structure and quantitatively explaining their effects throughout that structure. These effects can be characterized by probabilities derived from sources, such as equations, historical data, rules-of-thumb or expert knowledge. …

Vision-Based Target Geo-Location Using A Fixed-Wing Miniature Air Vehicle, D. Blake Barber, Joshua D. Redding, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Clark N. Taylor Dec 2006

Vision-Based Target Geo-Location Using A Fixed-Wing Miniature Air Vehicle, D. Blake Barber, Joshua D. Redding, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Clark N. Taylor

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a method for determining the GPS location of a ground-based object when imaged from a fixed-wing miniature air vehicle (MAV). Using the pixel location of the target in an image, with measurements of MAV position and attitude, and camera pose angles, the target is localized in world coordinates. The main contribution of this paper is to present four techniques for reducing the localization error. In particular, we discuss RLS filtering, bias estimation, flight path selection, and wind estimation. The localization method has been implemented and flight tested on BYU’s MAV testbed and experimental results are presented demonstrating …

Culex Tritaeniorhynchus Is Unlikely To Be A Vector For The Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv), Kidsadagon Pringproa, Sudchit Chungpivat, Rapee Panyathong, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

At least, 4 mosquito species, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex gelidus, Anopheles vagus and Mansonia uniformis were identified on a pig farm in Nakorn Pathom, Thailand between March 2004 to February 2005. C. tritaeniorhynchus was found to be the predominant species (88.387.63%). To determine whether C. tritaeniorhynchus could serve as a mechanical vector for PRRSV transmission, 2 experiments were conducted on: the duration of PRRSV within the mosquitoes and PRRSV transmission from the PRRSV-infected pigs to naive pigs by the infected mosquitoes. PRRSV nucleic acid could be detected in the whole pooled mosquito samples for up to 48 hours post feeding in …

Culturally Adapted Mental Health Interventions: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Derek Griner Dec 2006

Culturally Adapted Mental Health Interventions: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Derek Griner

Faculty Publications

There is a pressing need to enhance the availability and quality of mental health services provided to persons from historically disadvantaged racial and ethnic groups. Many previous authors have advocated that traditional mental health treatments be modified to better match clients? cultural contexts. Numerous studies evaluating culturally adapted interventions have appeared, and the present study used meta-analytic methodology to summarize these data. Across 76 studies the resulting random effects weighted average effect size was d = .45, indicating a moderately strong benefit of culturally adapted interventions. Interventions targeted to a specific cultural group were four times more effective than interventions …

Investigation Of Oxy-Anion Legand Adsorption Onto Surfaces Of Iron Oxide And Bacteria In Groundwater Aquifers, Haile Mengistu Dec 2006

Investigation Of Oxy-Anion Legand Adsorption Onto Surfaces Of Iron Oxide And Bacteria In Groundwater Aquifers, Haile Mengistu

Dissertations

We have measured adsorption of dissolved phosphate onto synthetic hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), dissolved arsenate and chromate onto the cell membrane of a bacterium species, S. putrefaciens as a function of pH, ionic strength, and relative concentrations of the respective oxy-ligands. Our experimental data were used to constrain optimal values for surface complexation reactions involving dissolved oxi-ligands (phosphate, and chromate) and the HFO surface and the cell membrane of S. putrefaciens respectively according to the diffuse layer model.

Our results provide a more accurate fit to experimental measurements over a broader range of pH (3 - 12), ionic strength and …

Plans As Products Of Learning, Samin Karim, Budhitama Subagdja, Liz Sonenberg Dec 2006

Plans As Products Of Learning, Samin Karim, Budhitama Subagdja, Liz Sonenberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents motivations and current related work in the field of plan learning. Additionally, two approaches that achieve plan learning are presented. The two presented approaches are centred on the BDI framework of agency and have particular focus on plans, which, alongside goals, are the means to fulfil intentions in most pragmatic and theoretical realisations of the BDI framework. The first approach is a hybrid architecture that combines a BDI plan extractor and executor with a generic low-level learner. The second approach uses hypotheses to suggest incremental refinements of a priori plans. Both approaches achieve plan generation that is …

A Statistical Analysis Of The Distribution Of Roads Salt In Blueberry Farm Soils Of Van Buren County, Michigan, Melissa M. Kovach Dec 2006

A Statistical Analysis Of The Distribution Of Roads Salt In Blueberry Farm Soils Of Van Buren County, Michigan, Melissa M. Kovach

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research is to compare and analyze the leaching of road salt (sodium chloride) in soils of blueberry farms. Due to recent events in Ottawa County, Michigan, road salt is increasingly being blamed for blueberry production loss. Sodium chloride is harmful because once a significant amount of salt enters the soil profile the salt is unable to be flushed out, and reduces the chance for nutrients to reach the plant for effective growth. This study tested the farms' soils for salinity before winter (October 2005), during winter (March 2006) and after winter (May 2006) to determine if …

Incisal Dental Microwear Of The Prehistoric Point Hope Communities: A Dietary And Cultural Synthesis, Kristin L. Krueger Dec 2006

Incisal Dental Microwear Of The Prehistoric Point Hope Communities: A Dietary And Cultural Synthesis, Kristin L. Krueger

Masters Theses

The prehistoric coastal communities of Point Hope, Alaska have been considered important Arctic archaeological sites since their initial excavations in 1939. The majority of the archaeological artifacts are grouped into two temporally distinct cultural components, the Ipiutak (2100-1500BP) and the Tigara (800-300BP). Although debated, Arctic archaeologists have suggested that the Ipiutak depended heavily on land mammals with only seasonal reliance on sea mammals, whereas the Tigara relied primarily on sea mammals including whales. While both groups clearly utilized foraging subsistence economies, the contrasts in their food acquisition strategies would have placed different demands on the males and females, particularly with …

Training Parents To Treat Noncompliance In Children With Developmental Disabilities Using Guided Compliance, Christine Bennett Dec 2006

Training Parents To Treat Noncompliance In Children With Developmental Disabilities Using Guided Compliance, Christine Bennett

Masters Theses

Noncompliance with parental directions is a critical target for children with developmental disabilities for several reasons, including the frequency of the problem and its impact on caregivers. Three decades of research have shown the effectiveness of guided compliance with children with developmental disabilities; however, only a few studies have examined the effects of parent-implemented guided compliance with this population (Handen, Parrish, McClung, Kerwin, & Evans, 1992; Smith & Lerman, 1999; Tarbox, Wallace, & Penrod, 2003). Three children with developmental disabilities and one primary caregiver for each participated in the present study. Parents were trained in three-step guided compliance (i.e., command, …

Chemoprevention Of Breast Cancer For Women At Hgh Risk, Kathryn Chan, Gloria J. Morris Dec 2006

Chemoprevention Of Breast Cancer For Women At Hgh Risk, Kathryn Chan, Gloria J. Morris

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Breast cancer remains the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Several studies have identified cohorts of women at higher than average risk to develop this disease. These are women who are exposed to high levels of endogenous or exogenous estrogens, those with a family history of breast cancer, and those who harbor benign breast disease or genetic mutations that predispose to breast cancer. In this population group, adapting a chemoprevention strategy to decrease the risk of developing overt disease is a strong consideration. To this end, tamoxifen is the most accepted agent to date. This …

Is Consumer Court Really Preferred To Banking Ombudsman? An Analytical Study, Aparna Meduri

ExpressO

The Banking Ombudsman under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme and the Consumer Redressal Authorities under the Consumer Protection Act both redresses the cases on deficiency of banking service. However, there exists a difference both in terms of redressal machinery and the procedure for redressal. This article brings out an analytical study, makes an attempt to give out the reasons why most of the aggrieved bank customers prefer to take shelter under the Consumer Protection Act instead of under their Banking Ombudsmen Scheme, and finally the proposed remedy for it.
