In this era of increased global cooperation, a growing number of negotiators conduct business in multiple countries and, therefore, need access to a systematic comparison of negotiating tendencies across a wide range of countries. Empirical work systematically comparing variations across a range of cultures is scarce. A comparative analysis of negotiating tendencies in five countries is presented. This study establishes the utility of the [Salacuse, J. (1998) Ten ways that culture affects negotiating style: Some survey results. Negotiation Journal, 14(3): 221–235] framework in identifying country differences across five countries, representing five cultural clusters. Significant differences in negotiation orientations both …

Near-Field Thermal Radiative Transfer And Thermoacoustic Effects From Vapor Plumes Produced By Pulsed Co/Sub 2 /Laser Ablation Of Bulk Water, S. I. Kudryashov, Kevin Lyon, S. D. Allen

Mechanical Engineering - Daytona Beach

Submillimeter deep heating of bulk water by thermal radiation from ablative water plumes produced by a 10.6 μm transversely excited atmospheric C O2 laser and the related acoustic generation has been studied using a contact time-resolved photoacoustic technique. Effective penetration depths of thermal radiation in water were measured as a function of incident laser fluence and the corresponding plume temperatures were estimated. The near-field thermal and thermoacoustic effects of thermal radiation in laser-ablated bulk water and their potential near-field implications are discussed.

Manufacturers' Outsourcing To Employment Services, Matthew Dey, Susan N. Houseman, Anne E. Polivka Dec 2006

Manufacturers' Outsourcing To Employment Services, Matthew Dey, Susan N. Houseman, Anne E. Polivka

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We estimate the effects of manufacturers' use of employment services—comprised primarily of temporary help and professional employer organizations—on measured employment and labor productivity in manufacturing between 1989 and 2004. A major contribution of the paper is the construction of panel data on employment by occupation and industry from the Occupational Employment Statistics program. We use these data to document the dramatic rise of production and other manual occupations within the employment services sector and, in conjunction with information from the Contingent Worker Supplements, to estimate the number of employment services workers assigned to manufacturing over the period. Although measured employment …

Personality Profiles Of Experienced U.S. Army Rotary-Wing Aviators Across Mission, Robert Grice Dec 2006

Personality Profiles Of Experienced U.S. Army Rotary-Wing Aviators Across Mission, Robert Grice

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Numerous studies have attempted to identify a relationship between personality traits and workplace performance. Workplace performance in this study was construed as including perceptions of congruence with the type of work and performance on the job. The Five-Factor Model (FFM) has been used to predict workplace performance across a number of vocations including aviation and the Revised NEO Personality Instrument (NEO-PI-R) is the most widely used FFM-based instrument. The NEO-PI-R has been used with commercial and military aviators to identify personality trait levels that are distinct from the general public and to predict performance in cockpit situations such as during …

The Integration Of Church And Home: A Strategic Partnership For Spiritual Formation, Michael B. Haynes Dec 2006

The Integration Of Church And Home: A Strategic Partnership For Spiritual Formation, Michael B. Haynes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The American family is deteriorating according to current research. This deterioration stems from the church’s inability to develop Christians who practice life according to the principles of the Bible. In a culture characterized by an atomic worldview, the church and family must work together to develop Christians who live according to the relational worldview of Scripture. This project describes how one church developed and implemented a strategy partnering the church and family for the spiritual formation of the next generation. This project is designed as a model for churches seeking to impact the culture one home at a time.

Genetic Resolution Of The Enigmatic Lesser Antillean Distribution Of The Frog Leptodactylus Validus (Anura, Leptodactylidae), Keneth Yanek, W. R. Heyer, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

Leptodactylus validus has an unusual distribution, inhabiting Trinidad, Tobago, and the Lesser Antilles, but not the mainland of South America. This distribution is inconsistent with other distribution patterns observed for these islands. Although slight variation in adult morphology has been observed among the different island populations of L. validus, call data suggest the presence of a single species. Calls of L. pallidirostris from Venezuela and Brazil suggested that this taxon might be conspecific with L. validus. Sequence data from the 12S and 16S mt rDNA genes indicate that L. validus represents a single species throughout its distribution and is conspecific …

Faint X‐Ray Structure In The Crab Pulsar Wind Nebula, F. D. Seward, W. H. Tucker, R. A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report on a Chandra observation of the Crab Nebula that gives the first clear view of the faint boundary of the Crab's X-ray-emitting pulsar wind nebula. There is structure in all directions. Fingers, loops, bays, and the south pulsar jet all indicate that either filamentary material or the magnetic field is controlling the relativistic electrons. In general, spectra soften as distance from the pulsar increases but do not change rapidly along linear features. This is particularly true for the pulsar jet. The termination of the jet is abrupt; the east side is close to an [O III] optical filament, …

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Specialization is common in medicine. Doctors become oncologists, radiologists, urologists, or even hernia repair specialists. Specialization is also common among practicing lawyers, who become estate planners or products liability lawyers or securities litigators. Judges, however, have historically been generalists who preside over any and all cases. This requires that judges become acquainted with the rules of civil procedure, the rules of criminal procedure, the evidentiary rules applicable to both civil and criminal cases, and the substantive law in almost every area. From the simplest slip-and-fall to the most complicated antitrust case, and nearly every civil and criminal action in between, …

A Comparison Of The Amely Gene Sequence In Argali (Ovis Ammon) And Domestic (Ovis Aries) Sheep, Kimberly Elwood Dec 2006

A Comparison Of The Amely Gene Sequence In Argali (Ovis Ammon) And Domestic (Ovis Aries) Sheep, Kimberly Elwood

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Amelogenin (AMEL) is a gene responsible for tooth bud development. It is located on the X-chromosome, thus called AMELX, in mammals. AMEL has been shown to be present in fish, amphibians, and reptiles, though the exact location on the chromosome has not been determined. Amelogenin-like gene (AMELY), an AMEL homolog encoded on the Y-chromosome in some mammals, including sheep, cattle, deer, bears, humans, and some primates, is shorter than the sequence on the X-chromosome. It is unknown whether AMELY is transcriptionally active, but it has been found to be useful for human sexing purposes in forensics, archaeology and prenatal diagnosis, …

Following In Their Footsteps: The Risks Of The Intergenerational Cycle Of Incarceration Among Inmates And Their Children, Megan Elizabeth Harris

All Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to test the proposition that parents who are currently incarcerated are at high risk for having children who are also incarcerated. Furthermore, several risk factors, commonly found in homes with previously or currently incarcerated members, were identified and analyzed to predict the odds of an incarcerated parent also having an incarcerated child.

The current study found that the majority of the demographic variables (gender, race, and marital status) were significant predictors of child incarceration. Furthermore, only a few risk factors were found to be significant predictors of an inmate’s child being incarcerated: an inmate …

Mansoura Medical Journal

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme is induced in the central nervous system after various insults. It has been localized to neurons and in cells associated with the cerebral vas-culature where the system is involved in the inflammatory component of the ischaemic cascade, COX-2 is part of the initial reaction that involves the arachidonic acid cascade, which produces molecules that involved in inflammatory response. The present study evaluated the pharmacological effects of a specific COX-2 inhibitor (rofecoxib), in a permanent focal cerebral ischaemia model in albino rats and its effects were compared to those of calcium channel blocker (ni-modipine). Experiments were carried out …

Effect Of Pentoxifylline On Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis In Albino Rats, Karawan M., Abdel Rahman

Mansoura Medical Journal

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common inflammatory autoimmune disorder. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have become an integral part of RA therapy. Adverse effects of these drugs are widely expanding. Data implicate the cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) in the pathophysiology of RA as well as involved in the indo-methacin induced gastrointestinal damage. Pentoxifylline (PTX), a methylxanthine derivative is documented to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-TNF-cc properties. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of PTX on edema, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and TNF-a in experimentally induced collagen II adjuvant arthritis in albino-rats. Forty-two male albino rats weighing 200-250 grams were …

Experimental Study Of The Possible Effect Of Valsartan On Insulin Resistance In Fructose- Fed Albino Rats, Somaia Mokbet

Mansoura Medical Journal

Insulin resistance (IR) is a consequence of high fructose fed diet in rats. The current study was carried out to declare if tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) exerts a partial role in the development of IR in non-obese rat model; fructose fed rats {FFR) like that happens in obese rat models. We evaluate the influence of vatsar-tan (a selective blocker of angiotensin receptor type-1) in comparison to metformin (a known insulin sensitizer) on enhancement of insulin sensitivity in FFR. Rats were divided into 2 equal groups (36 rats /group), one group received high fructose diet to induce insulin resistance and the …
