His/Tory And Its Vicissitudes In Álvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies And Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Luz Angélica Kirschner Dec 2006

His/Tory And Its Vicissitudes In Álvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies And Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Luz Angélica Kirschner

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "His/tory and Its Vicissitudes in Álvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies and Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale" Luz Angélica Kirschner argues that in Julia Álvarez's In the Time of the Bautterflies and in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, although with certain limitations and differences in their approaches, in a complementary way, their texts exemplify, as Joan Wallace Scott suggested, the need to consider gender "a useful category of historical analysis" to overturn the monological and well-organized version of official history that, in the process of history writing, has tended to obliterate "insignificant" narratives and voices. At the …

Language In Modern African Drama, Isaiah Ilo Dec 2006

Language In Modern African Drama, Isaiah Ilo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Language in Modern African Drama" Isaiah Ilo proposes alternative criteria for language choice in modern African drama. The two most influential constructs on the language question are Fanon's essentialism that rejects Western languages as instruments of subjugation and Achebe's hybrid approach which entails subversion of the foreign languages by infusing them with African verbal characteristics. The constructs, which emphasise indigenised language and content, stem from the idea that consciousness of the colonial experience should determine language choice and usage in post-colonial African literary creativity. In building a case for a post-indiginist aesthetic, Ilo argues that present reality …

Media, Communication, And The Relevance Of Caragiale's Work Today, Cristian Stamatoiu Dec 2006

Media, Communication, And The Relevance Of Caragiale's Work Today, Cristian Stamatoiu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Cristian Stamatoiu discusses in his paper "Media, Communication, and the Relevance of Caragiale's Work Today" media structures in the corpus of Romanian writer and thinker Ion Luca Caragiale (1852-1912). Stamatoiu argues that in addition to the artistic sophistication of his work, Caragiale anticipated the impact of new media revolution and its forms as an imitation of "pathological situations" of public discourse and communication per se. Caragiale is, therefore, a writer of surprisingly up-to-date relevance today because, despite his air of the belle époque, in his grotesque farces and in his short stories we discover mental structures found in and characteristic …

Globalization And Christopher Columbus In The Americas, Elise Bartosik-Vélez Dec 2006

Globalization And Christopher Columbus In The Americas, Elise Bartosik-Vélez

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "Globalization and Christopher Columbus in the Americas," Elise Bartosik-Vélez considers the responses of scholars working in colonial and early modern studies to recent exponential increases in the transnationalization of capital and the resulting changes in the role of the nation-state. The case of Christopher Columbus and his appropriation by US-American nationalists during the early modern period is particularly instructive with regard to this discussion because Columbus exemplifies not only the drive to globalization of early modern European colonialism, but also the limits of nation-centric thinking in understanding the intersections and overlappings between empire and nation. Columbus in the Americas …

Towards A Common Law Originalism, Bernadette Meyler Dec 2006

Towards A Common Law Originalism, Bernadette Meyler

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Originalists' emphasis upon William Blackstone's "Commentaries on the Laws of England" tends to suggest that the common law of the Founding era consisted in a set of determinate rules that can be mined for the purposes of constitutional interpretation. This Article argues instead that disparate strands of the common law, some emanating from the colonies and others from England, some more archaic and others more innovative, co-existed at the time of the Founding. Furthermore, jurists and politicians of the Founding generation were not unaware that the common law constituted a disunified field; indeed, the jurisprudence of the common law suggested …

31 | ‘En Esur (‘Ein Asawir) I: Excavatios At A Protohistoric Site In The Coastal Plain Of Israel, Eli Yannai

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

‘En Esur is a large, multi-level protohistoric site with a sequence of settlements from the Neolithic, Early Chalcolithic, Late Chalcolithic periods and Early Bronze Age I. It grew up in an area of copious springs and rich alluvial fields in the northern Sharon Plain. A large-scale salvage excavation in 1993, and further excavations in 1999 and 2004, revealed exceptional architectural and material-cultural finds, including rich pottery, flint and groundstone assemblages.

Point Source Of Pollutants In The Houston Ship Channel, Adetoun Aboaba Dec 2006

Point Source Of Pollutants In The Houston Ship Channel, Adetoun Aboaba

Theses (Pre-2016)

Water, the most abundant compound, can become easily polluted owing to its high polarity. Water pollution can be classified into two main categories namely point source of pollution in which the source of pollutants can be identified and non-source of pollution in which the source of pollutants cannot be traced or identified to a specific location. This study is focused on point source of pollution. A typical example is the Houston Ship Channel, which has being subjected to considerable amounts of chemical pollutants due to high levels of industrial and transportation activities. Scientists today have made the study of this …

The Role Of The Cytokines And Cell-Adhesion Molecules On The Immunopathology Of Acute Appendicitis, Mahmood Y. Hachim, Abdulrazak H. Ahmed Dec 2006

The Role Of The Cytokines And Cell-Adhesion Molecules On The Immunopathology Of Acute Appendicitis, Mahmood Y. Hachim, Abdulrazak H. Ahmed

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To study the local expression of the proinflammatory cytokine such as interferon gamma and anti-inflammatory cytokine like interleukin-10 (IL-10) and their role in cell adhesion molecules (CAM) expression on the surface of endothelial cell at the site of inflammation in acute appendicitis. The local expression of these cytokines and CAM was correlated with clinical findings to shed light on their role in the pathogenesis of acute appendicitis. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with acute appendicitis and 6 apparently normal appendices were removed incidentally from individuals presented with problems other than appendicitis, were included in this prospective study. They were attendant of …

The Synovial Plicae In The Knee Joint, Hulya Gurbuz, Osman U. Calpur, Mert Ozcan, Tunc Kutoglu, Recep Mesut

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and evaluate the prevalence of 4 kinds of synovial plicae named according to patella, which are inferior, medial, lateral and superior. METHODS: We evaluated plicae in 318 knee arthroscopies through video records, obtained from January 1994 to December 2002 in the Arthroscopy Unit, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Trakya University, Edirne, Turkey. In addition, we also investigated plicae in 7 bilateral knee cadavers. RESULTS: In the arthroscopic evaluation, the prevalence of infrapatellar synovial plica was 194 (61%), mediopatellar plica was 302 (95%), lateral patellar plica was 66 (20.7%) and suprapatellar plica was 184 (57.8%). We …
