Body My House: May Swenson's Work And Life, Paul Crumbley, Patricia M. Gantt Jan 2006

Body My House: May Swenson's Work And Life, Paul Crumbley, Patricia M. Gantt

All USU Press Publications

The first collection of critical essays on May Swenson and her literary universe, Body My House initiates an academic conversation about an unquestionably major poet of the middle and late twentienth century. Includes many previously unpublished Swenson poems. Essays here address the breadth of Swenson's literary corpus and offer varied scholarly approaches to it. They reference Swenson manuscripts---poems, letters, diaries, and other prose---some of which have not been widely available before. Chapters focus on Swenson's work as a nature writer; the literary and social contexts of her writing; her national and international acclaim; her work as a translator; associations with …

Keywords In Creative Writing, Wendy Bishop, David Starkey

All USU Press Publications

Wendy Bishop and David Starkey have created a remarkable resource volume for creative writing students and other writers just getting started. In two- to ten-page discussions, these authors introduce forty-one central concepts in the fields of creative writing and writing instruction, with discussions that are accessible yet grounded in scholarship and years of experience. Keywords in Creative Writing provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the field of creative writing through its landmark terms, exploring concerns as abstract as postmodernism and identity politics alongside very practical interests of beginning writers, like contests, agents, and royalties. This approach makes the book …

Research Manuscript Series

This monograph, bearing the unpretentious subtitle "Evidence from the Arts and Sciences Building" stands as an elegant contradiction to all of those easy excuses. Russell Skowronek and his co-investigators have produced a report that stands not only as a template for what can be done with a modest data-set of ten prehistoric burials, but as a template for cooperation with the Ohlone descendants of those who, well over a millennium ago, carefully prepared their loved ones for eternity.

Working from ancient maps and city directories, Carlson and associates have produced a fine summary of virtually everyone who ever occupied what …

Authorship Of The Most Notable Antiquity (1655): Inigo Jones And Early Printed Books, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The Most Notable Antiquity of Great Britain, Vulgarly Called Stone- Heng, on Salisbury Plain (London, 1655) is the only publication associated with Inigo Jones (1573-1652), Surveyor for Prince Henry, King James I, and King Charles I. However, the precise nature of Jones's contribution to this work is much debated, his authorship being challenged. Jones's supposed lack of learning has led scholars to believe that Jones had little or no involvement in the work. However, new evidence suggests that Jones possessed far more extensive learning than has previously been credited to him. Indeed, this essay will show the nature of collaboration …

A Proposed Framework For Visualization To Teach Computer Science, M. Yousoof, M. Sapiyan, K. Kamaluddin

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Computer programming is considered a very difficult course by many computer science students. The reasons for the difficulties include cognitive load involved in programming, different learning styles of students, instructional methodology and the choice of the programming languages. To reduce the difficulties the following have been tried: pair programming, program visualization, different learning styles etc. However, these efforts have produced limited success. This paper reviews the problem and proposes a framework to help students overcome the difficulties involved.

Equal Protection In The World Of Art And Obscenity: The Art Photographer's Latent Struggle With Obscenity Standards In Contemporary America, Elaine Wang Jan 2006

Equal Protection In The World Of Art And Obscenity: The Art Photographer's Latent Struggle With Obscenity Standards In Contemporary America, Elaine Wang

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Part I of this article describes the initial hurdles that all visual art forms, including photography, face with respect to First Amendment protection given the power of visual imagery and the three-pronged test for obscenity set forth in Miller v. California. Of particular relevance is the "serious artistic value" prong of the Miller test and the problems inherent in determining who is to judge as well as how one might judge whether a work, particularly a photograph that may be construed to have a non-artistic function, possesses "serious artistic value."

Part II addresses the overall approach to photography in three …
