Active Semantic Electronic Medical Record, Amit P. Sheth, Sangeeta Agrawal, Jonathan Lathem, Nicole Oldham, H. Wingate, K. Gallagher

Kno.e.sis Publications

The healthcare industry is rapidly advancing towards the widespread use of electronic medical records systems to manage the increasingly large amount of patient data and reduce medical errors. In addition to patient data there is a large amount of data describing procedures, treatments, diagnoses, drugs, insurance plans, coverage, formularies and the relationships between these data sets. While practices have benefited from the use of EMRs, infusing these essential programs with rich domain knowledge and rules can greatly enhance their performance and ability to support clinical decisions. Active Semantic Electronic Medical Record (ASEMR) application discussed here uses Semantic Web technologies to …

Exploring Characteristics Of Social Classification, Xia Lin, Joan E. Beaudoin, Yen Bui, Xaushai Desai Nov 2006

Exploring Characteristics Of Social Classification, Xia Lin, Joan E. Beaudoin, Yen Bui, Xaushai Desai

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Three empirical studies on characteristics of social classification are reported in this paper. The first study compared social tags with controlled vocabularies and title-based automatic indexing and found little overlaps among the three indexing methods. The second study investigated how well tags could be categorized to improve effectiveness of searching and browsing. The third study explored factors and radios that had the most significant impact on tag convergence. Finding of the three studies will help to identify characteristics of those tagging terms that are content-rich and that can be used to increase effectiveness of tagging, searching and browsing.

Detecting Compaction Disequilibrium With Anisotropy Of Magnetic Susceptibility, Kurt Schwehr, Lisa Tauxe, Neal Driscoll, Homa Lee Nov 2006

Detecting Compaction Disequilibrium With Anisotropy Of Magnetic Susceptibility, Kurt Schwehr, Lisa Tauxe, Neal Driscoll, Homa Lee

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In clay-rich sediment, microstructures and macrostructures influence how sediments deform when under stress. When lithology is fairly constant, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) can be a simple technique for measuring the relative consolidation state of sediment, which reflects the sediment burial history. AMS can reveal areas of high water content and apparent overconsolidation associated with unconformities where sediment overburden has been removed. Many other methods for testing consolidation and water content are destructive and invasive, whereas AMS provides a nondestructive means to focus on areas for additional geotechnical study. In zones where the magnetic minerals are undergoing diagenesis, AMS should …

Engaging Future Scientists In Information Use And Evaluation, Phil Flynn, Mary Lou Baker Jones Nov 2006

Engaging Future Scientists In Information Use And Evaluation, Phil Flynn, Mary Lou Baker Jones

University Libraries' Staff Publications

As science and engineering librarians at Wright State University Libraries, we work with the traditional user groups of teaching faculty, research faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students. In recent years a new user group has been getting our attention: middle school science students who are guests of the College of Science & Mathematics' outreach program. Each December, area middle school students participate in "Exploring Science" - a half-day of workshops intended to help "tomorrow's scientists today." Faculty and students from the college provide hands-on workshops in chemistry, biology, anatomy, mathematics, geology, environmental sciences, psychology, engineering, and neuroscience; the University Libraries …

An Examination Of Conflict Conversation In An Online Community: The Pie Fight At Dailykos.Com, Samantha Isabella Soma

Dissertations and Theses

The increasing popularity of the social web and online communities requires the attention of researchers of conflict resolution. Although there are many ways to resolve conflict offline, the ways in which conflict takes place within a native online context have not been much studied. Are any of the tools and strategies that are used to improve communication offline used successfully online, or are some other strategies taking their place? What communication patterns occur within an online community equipped with comment moderation capabilities? This research is a case study and addressed these questions by performing a qualitative analysis of comment conversations …

The Effects Of Cyclic Strain On Rat Tail Tenocytes, Richard James Crockett Nov 2006

The Effects Of Cyclic Strain On Rat Tail Tenocytes, Richard James Crockett

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cyclic tension on the expression of hyaluronic acid, its receptor (CD44), and total glycosaminoglycan content in tendon fibroblasts. An in vitro model was used to analyze tenocytes from the tail tendons of rats. Tenocytes in the experimental group were exposed to cyclic mechanical stress, and using ELISA, western blot, and colormetric dye-binding assays, the effect of strain on cultured tenocytes was examined. Tenocytes exposed to mechanical strain produced 1528 ± 58 ng/mL (mean ± SEM) of hyaluronic acid, while those in a control environment produced only 730 ± 27 …

Fuzzy Neural Network Models For Multispectral Image Analysis, Arun D. Kulkarni, Sara Mccaslin Nov 2006

Fuzzy Neural Network Models For Multispectral Image Analysis, Arun D. Kulkarni, Sara Mccaslin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fuzzy neural networks (FNNs) provide a new approach for classification of multispectral data and to extract and optimize classification rules. Neural networks deal with issues on a numeric level, whereas fuzzy logic deals with them on a semantic or linguistic level. FNNs synthesize fuzzy logic and neural networks. Recently, there has been growing interest in the research community not only to understand how FNNs arrive at particular decisions but how to decode information stored in the form of connection strengths in the network. In this paper, we propose fuzzy neural network models for classification of pixels in multispectral images and …

How To Be A Depository Library Without Being A Depository Library: Adding Records For Electronic Government Documents To The Library Catalog, James T. Shaw Nov 2006

How To Be A Depository Library Without Being A Depository Library: Adding Records For Electronic Government Documents To The Library Catalog, James T. Shaw

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Judith Russell, the Superintendent of Documents of the U.S. Government Printing Office, remarked at the ACRL National Conference in March 2005:

"With 95% of the new titles added to the Federal Depository Library Program available online, every library now has the ability to access a wide array of government information for its patrons at no charge. Understanding what is already available--and what is coming soon--can help each library plan for the integration of electronic government information into its reference and public services" (Assuring Access).

Electronic distribution of government documents has opened more avenues for access to government information, but libraries …
