Ion Transport And Electrochemical Tuning Of Fermi Level In Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Probed By In Situ Raman Scattering, S. Gupta, J. Robertson Nov 2006

Ion Transport And Electrochemical Tuning Of Fermi Level In Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Probed By In Situ Raman Scattering, S. Gupta, J. Robertson

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

In situ Raman spectroscopy technique was employed to investigate the ion transport process and to determine the concomitant electrochemical tuning of Fermi level in single-wall carbon nanotube. The variation of structural bonding in single-wall carbon nanotube bundle dipped in aqueous alkaline earth halide electrolyte such as Ca Cl2 with electrochemical biasing was monitored. It is because Raman can detect changes in C-C bond length through radial breathing mode at ∼184 cm-1 that varies inversely with the nanotube diameter and the G band at ∼1590 cm-1 that varies with the axial bond length. Consistent reversible and substantial variations in Raman intensity …

Cdx4 Dysregulates Hox Gene Expression And Generates Acute Myeloid Leukemia Alone And In Cooperation With Meis1a In A Murine Model, Dimple Bansal, Claudia Scholl, Stefan Frohling, Elizabeth Mcdowell, Benjamin H. Lee, Konstanze Döhner, Patricia Ernst Nov 2006

Lee, Konstanze Döhner, Patricia Ernst

Dartmouth Scholarship

HOX genes have emerged as critical effectors of leukemogenesis, but the mechanisms that regulate their expression in leukemia are not well understood. Recent data suggest that the caudal homeobox transcription factors CDX1, CDX2, and CDX4, developmental regulators of HOX gene expression, may contribute to HOX gene dysregulation in leukemia. We report here that CDX4 is expressed normally in early hematopoietic progenitors and is expressed aberrantly in approximately 25% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patient samples. Cdx4 regulates Hox gene expression in the adult murine hematopoietic system and dysregulates Hox genes that are implicated in leukemogenesis. Furthermore, bone marrow progenitors that …

The Circuitous Path To The Comparison Of Simulated Values From Crop Models With Field Observations, Albert Weiss, Wally Wilhelm Nov 2006

The Circuitous Path To The Comparison Of Simulated Values From Crop Models With Field Observations, Albert Weiss, Wally Wilhelm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Journal of Agricultural Science, Cambridge has been a fixture in dissemination of crop simulation models and the concepts and data upon which they are built since the inception of computers and computer modeling in the mid-20th century. To quantify the performance of a crop simulation model, model outputs are compared with observed values using statistical measures of bias, i.e. the difference between simulated and observed values. While applying these statistical measures is unambiguous for the experienced user, the same cannot always be said of determining the observed or simulated values. For example, differences in accessing crop development can be …

A New Architecture For Single-Event Upset Detection & Reconfiguration Of Sram-Based Fpgas, Ihesiaba Kamanu Nov 2006

A New Architecture For Single-Event Upset Detection & Reconfiguration Of Sram-Based Fpgas, Ihesiaba Kamanu

Theses

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are used in a variety of applications, ranging from consumer electronics to devices in spacecrafts because of their flexibility in achieving requirements such as low cost, high performance, and fast turnaround. SRAM-based FPGAs can experience single bit flips in the configuration memory due to high-energy neutrons or alpha particles hitting critical nodes in the SRAM cells, by transferring enough energy to effect the change. High energy particles can be emitted by cosmic radiation or traces of radioactive elements in device packaging. The result of this could range from unwanted functional or data modification, data loss …

Radiation Releases At Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico: Recently Reported Radiation Releases And Other Potential Sources Of Radiation Release, Albuquerque Center For Peace And Justice, Paul Robinson

Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice

About Sandia National Laboratories: "Sandia was established as “Z Division” on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M., in 1945 during the Manhattan Project as a division of the Los Alamos Laboratory to provide engineering design, production, assembly, and field testing of non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons. On request of President Harry Truman, Sandia became an independent laboratory on Nov. 1,1949. Since 1949, Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) has developed science-based technologies that support our national security.

Sandia is a government-owned/contractor-operated facility “managed by a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration …

Human-Nonhuman Primate Interconnections And Their Relevance To Anthropology, Agustin Fuentes Nov 2006

Human-Nonhuman Primate Interconnections And Their Relevance To Anthropology, Agustin Fuentes

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

The human-nonhuman primate interface is a core component in conservation and an emerging area of discourse across anthropology. There is a growing recognition of the relevance of long-term sympatry between human and nonhuman primates. Until recently these relationships received limited attention in the anthropological literature and in the primatological construction of models for the behavior and evolution of primate societies. Most socioecological investigations into primate groups and human populations do not incorporate their interactions (beyond predation or crop raiding), potential pathogen sharing, or the role of the anthropogenically impacted environment. Current relationships between humans and nonhuman primates are generally assumed …

Coexistence And Exclusion Between Humans And Monkeys In Japan: Is Either Really Possible?, David S. Sprague, Nobusuke Iwasaki Nov 2006

Coexistence And Exclusion Between Humans And Monkeys In Japan: Is Either Really Possible?, David S. Sprague, Nobusuke Iwasaki

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

The Japanese people face a cultural and ecological challenge in seeking a new relationship between themselves and the Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). Monkeys are a major agricultural pest. Monkey habitat often lies within a short distance from fields and villages, and vice versa, especially in mountainous areas. The idealized solution is a form of coexistence where humans and monkeys somehow negotiate a harmonious compromise. A word used often in Japanese is kyosei, to live in common, implying a more intimate relation than mere side-by-side coexistence. In practice, kyosei is a word used by policy makers or scholars, but less often …
