Ranging Technology Transition With Make Before Break, Roshan Pius, James Eidson, Ante Culo
Ranging Technology Transition With Make Before Break, Roshan Pius, James Eidson, Ante Culo
Defensive Publications Series
Proximity-based service use cases use ranging technologies to provide distance measurements. However, in such use cases, a single static ranging technology is chosen before a ranging session and used throughout the session. This can degrade ranging performance. This disclosure describes techniques for dynamically switching between different ranging technologies during an ongoing ranging session. Per the techniques, when switching from a first to a second ranging technology, the second technology is activated concurrently with the first technology when a corresponding transition criteria is satisfied and the first technology is deactivated only after an ok-to-stop criteria is satisfied. This prevents gaps in …
System And Automated Method For Isomorphic Concept Discovery And Cross-Domain Architectural Synthesis Via Controlled Hallucination And Reverse Constrained Mapping: Vector-Isolated Rag Pipeline And Bi-Directional Optimization Loop For Open-Domain Structural Analogy Generation., Herbert Gillis
Defensive Publications Series
An automated data processing system and computer-implemented method are disclosed for programmatically synthesizing novel structural architectures in a vacant target domain space utilizing the invariant physical or structural laws of a highly validated source domain. The system executes a generative forward loop by extracting an ordered tuple of structural and functional mechanics from a source domain, removing forward-validation lexicon filters, and enforcing aggressive semantic isolation and lexical pruning to block known industry-specific terms. Forced into a vector space void, an optimization engine or generative model synthesizes a structurally constrained neologism and an associated set of invented mechanisms. The system then …

System For Ai-Generated Interactive Suggestions On Spatially Annotated Digital Media, Harshita Sharma
Defensive Publications Series
Discussions related to shared digital media may be disconnected from the visual content, which can fragment the user experience and delink comments from specific visual details. Systems and methods are described that can augment media with an interactive, context-aware conversational layer. A user can affix an annotation to a specific spatial location within visual media, such as an image, and this annotation may serve as a contextual prompt for a multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) model. The AI model can process the annotation's text in conjunction with the visual data of the underlying media region to generate and present relevant follow-up …
Dynamic User Interface Calibration Of An External Display Using A Head-Mounted Device, Vivek Kushwaha
Dynamic User Interface Calibration Of An External Display Using A Head-Mounted Device, Vivek Kushwaha
Defensive Publications Series
User interfaces on external displays can be static, which may lead to suboptimal viewing experiences at varying distances, while some dynamic solutions can have limitations. Systems and methods are described that use a camera on a head-mounted device (HMD) to determine a user's spatial relationship to an external display. The HMD may capture video of the display, calculate the user's distance and viewing angle based on the display's appearance in the camera's view, and transmit this data wirelessly to the display. In response, the external display can dynamically adjust its user interface, for example, by modifying element sizes and information …
Personalizing A Shared Display Using Context From Egocentric Vision, Vivek Kushwaha
Personalizing A Shared Display Using Context From Egocentric Vision, Vivek Kushwaha
Defensive Publications Series
Content recommendation systems for shared displays may lack awareness of a user's real-time physical context, potentially affecting the relevance of suggestions. The described techniques detail a system that can use a wearable computing device (e.g., smart glasses with an egocentric camera, a smart watch, etc.) to identify an object a user is interacting with. This object context can be validated and wirelessly communicated (e.g., via a local or personal area network) to a nearby shared display, such as a smart television or public kiosk.
On-Device Bidding Protocol For Context-Aware Dynamic Media Stream Sequencing, Vivek Kushwaha
On-Device Bidding Protocol For Context-Aware Dynamic Media Stream Sequencing, Vivek Kushwaha
Defensive Publications Series
Media consumption may be fragmented across various application-based services, and centralized recommendation engines can operate within separate ecosystems, which may introduce privacy considerations. This disclosure relates to systems and methods for dynamically compiling a personalized media stream on a client device (e.g., a smartphone, smart watch, television, or wearable device). The approach can utilize an on-device, multi-agent bidding protocol where a user agent may initiate a content auction by broadcasting abstracted, locally-derived context tokens to multiple streaming service agents that can represent different providers. These agents may then submit bids containing relevant content, and the user agent can select a …

Time-Normalized Evapotranspiration Reveals Substantial Nighttime Water Loss In A Controlled-Environment System, Claudia Garrido-Ruiz, Bruce Bugbee, Juan D. González-Teruel, Sarah Schreck, Scott B. Jones
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Efficient water management in closed-loop plant production systems requires accurate characterization of evapotranspiration (ET), because crop water loss influences atmospheric moisture conditions within the controlled environment. Day–night ET dynamics were quantified in the Engineering Development Unit of the Utah Reusable Root Module, a zero-discharge system for controlled-environment crop production.
Volumetric water content was monitored at high temporal resolution using two electromagnetic sensors installed at different depths within five independent root modules with different surface-containment configurations. Hourly ET was derived from water-content depletion and cross-checked against irrigation inputs. Following seedling emergence, system ET increased from < 1 L d⁻¹ to approximately 3 L d⁻¹ by day 12. During rapid growth, defined as the four consecutive days when system ET exceeded this threshold, hourly ET differed significantly among four light-period categories, with daytime ET highest, followed by night-transition, day-transition, and nighttime ET.
Although the cumulative daily nighttime-to-daytime ET …

Beyond Fragmentation: A Multidimensional Framework For Green Product Innovation, David Mayorga, Jorge Tello-Gamarra, Martín Hernani-Merino, Sonia Oré
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Green product innovation (GPI) has become an essential strategy for companies to address environmental challenges while strengthening their competitiveness in a sustainable manner. However, important gaps remain in understanding how internal organizational factors interact with external pressures that shape their implementation. Existing conceptual frameworks have advanced the identification of these factors, but they often focus only on direct relationships and overlook the mechanisms that connect them. They also tend to adopt narrow perspectives that fail to capture the hybrid complexity observed in empirical evidence. This study aims to develop an integrative conceptual framework that synthesizes the antecedents, processes, and outcomes …

Pe2prompt: A Large Language Model-Native Framework For Interpretable Static Malware Analysis, Yilin Sun, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Large Language Models (LLMs) possess strong general-purpose reasoning abilities, yet their integration into static malware analysis pipelines remains limited due to the representational gap between high-dimensional numerical features and the natural-language input format required for inference. This study introduces PE2Prompt, a Large Language Model-native framework for interpretable and industrially deployable static malware analysis. PE2Prompt formalizes a modular process that bridges numeric PE features and LLM reasoning through three key components: (1) LLM-guided feature curation directly from raw EMBER JSON fields to identify semantically relevant attributes; (2) numerical feature summarization, compressing byte-histogram and entropy distributions into interpretable descriptors; and (3) structured …

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) threaten aquatic ecosystems, public health, and tourism and fishing industries throughout the United States, including Florida. Because HABs can develop and spread rapidly, geographically representative sampling efforts can be very difficult and labor-intensive, and traditional monitoring methods, such as satellite-based remote sensing, often lack the spatiotemporal resolution needed to characterize bloom dynamics. This project, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (Grant No. 05D36825), aims to develop an uncrewed aircraft (UA)-based water and aerosol sampling approach to improve HAB monitoring and support prediction and mitigation efforts. One year into our funding period, we have integrated a multi-depth, …

Trust-Aware Federated Learning For Privacy-Preserving Iot Intrusion Detection, Muhammad Asad, Santosh Kumar Banbhrani, Chen Wei
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) networks has increased the need for intrusion detection mechanisms that provide accurate threat detection while preserving privacy, resisting malicious clients, and limiting communication overhead. Existing Federated Learning (FL)-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) remain challenged by heterogeneous non-IID client data, exposure of model updates, adversarial client participation, and frequent model transmission. To address these limitations, this paper proposes FLZT-IDS (Federated Learning with Zero-Trust for Intrusion Detection in IoT). The framework employs gradient-deviation monitoring to mitigate the effects of heterogeneous client updates, while Graph Neural Networks (GNN) and an Attention-based BiLSTM capture relational and …

Community-Based Water Management Through Cultural Ecosystem Services: Traditional Wisdom And Modern Adaptation In Senjoyo Spring, Indonesia, Puji Winarti, Sri Haryani, Sri Wardani, Langlang Handayani
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Small-scale freshwater ecosystems play vital ecological and cultural roles. However, community-based water management (CBWM) often lacks a clear analytical approach to integrating cultural ecosystem services (CES) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), limiting the practical understanding of culturally grounded governance. To address this gap, this qualitative study explores the interactions between CES and TEK, analyzes their roles within CBWM, and identifies their implications for sustainable water governance. The integration between cultural value and local ecological knowledge makes Senjoyo Spring an appropriate location for this study. Data were collected through interviews with 20 key informants, field observations, forum group discussions (FGDs), and …

The Effects Of Restorative Practices On Student Behavior And School Climate: A Case Study, Victoria Smith, M.A.T., Donna Governor, Ph.D, Carlise Womack-Wynne, Ed.D
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Schools have been seeking alternatives to punitive discipline measures. As an alternative, restorative practices offer healing, community, and relationships. This case study examined a middle school that had been implementing restorative practices since the 2019–2020 school year, three full years at the time of study. A mixed-methods design was used in order to investigate whether the implementation of restorative practices had resulted in a decrease of student misbehaviors and an increase in staff perceptions of school climate. Staff were interviewed (n = 19) and surveyed (n = 44). A thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data, and …
