Ichthyofaunal Assemblages In Three Approximate But Ecologically Diverse Streams In Clark County, Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, Scott Jordan, Lesley Self, Henry W. Robison

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Three tributaries to the Ouachita River in eastern Clark County, Arkansas, empty into the river within a collective distance of about 9 km. The streams drain basins derived from the Wilcox formation, partially overlain by terrace and alluvial deposits. Despite their proximity, the streams are very different: L'Eau Frais has a gravel substrate and was recognized by the French as a cool water stream, Tupelo Creek is a bottomland stream from which numerous Water Tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) emerge, and Saline Bayou was named due to its marked salinity. We studied the assemblages of fishes in these 3 very different drainages …

Salinity Controls Phytoplankton Response To Nutrient Enrichment In The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Usa, Amy M. Marcarelli, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, O. Griset Jan 2006

Salinity Controls Phytoplankton Response To Nutrient Enrichment In The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Usa, Amy M. Marcarelli, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, O. Griset

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

To examine how salinity and nutrient supply interact to control phytoplankton community composition, nutrient limitation, and dinitrogen (N2) fixation rates in the Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA), we conducted a series of bioassay experiments with plankton from both Gilbert Bay, where salinities are near 160 g·L–1, and Farmington Bay, where salinities range from 10 to 90 g·L–1. Six-day nutrient addition bioassay experiments showed that the extant phyto plankton communities in both bays were limited by nitrogen (N). However, in 28- to 30-day factorial bioassay experiments in which both salinities and nutrient supply were manipulated, phosphorus stimulated chlorophyll a as much …

Good Practices For Sharing Ecological Models, Karin M. Kettenring, Barbara T. Martinez, Anthony M. Starfield, Wayne M. Getz Jan 2006

Good Practices For Sharing Ecological Models, Karin M. Kettenring, Barbara T. Martinez, Anthony M. Starfield, Wayne M. Getz

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

As the fields of ecology and conservation biology increasingly rely on models to address pertinent questions, there has been greater sharing of models among scientists. However, many models lack comprehensive documentation, especially in a format that is easy to use and to understand. Also, modelers lack a framework they can use when evaluating a model for its potential use. Here we outline how ecologists and conservation biologists can begin to establish a culture of good practice for model sharing. We offer suggestions on how model developers, model users, user communities, and journal editors can contribute to the appropriate sharing of …

Microbes Pumping Iron: Anaerobic Microbial Iron Oxidation And Reduction, Karrie A. Weber, Laurie A. Achenbach, John D. Coates Jan 2006

Microbes Pumping Iron: Anaerobic Microbial Iron Oxidation And Reduction, Karrie A. Weber, Laurie A. Achenbach, John D. Coates

Publications

Iron (Fe) has long been a recognized physiological requirement for life, yet for many microorganisms that persist in water, soils and sediments, its role extends well beyond that of a nutritional necessity. Fe(II) can function as an electron source for iron-oxidizing microorganisms under both oxic and anoxic conditions and Fe(III) can function as a terminal electron acceptor under anoxic conditions for iron-reducing microorganisms. Given that iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, iron redox reactions have the potential to support substantial microbial populations in soil and sedimentary environments. As such, biological iron apportionment has been described …

Protecting The Integrity Of Organic Food In The Face Of Genetic Engineering: The Case Of Roundup Ready Alfalfa, Kristina Joy Hubbard

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Genetically engineered (GE) seeds are central to the debates around agricultural biotechnology, and continue to be rapidly adopted across the globe. At the same time that GE crops increase in acreage, the organic market has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the American food industry. While biotechnology companies claim there is a successful “coexistence” of GE crop technologies and organic crops, many organic producers are already challenged by keeping unwanted GE traits out of their fields. Still, little attention has been given to the role of regulations in the face of organic contamination by genetically engineered material. This …

Nanoelectropulse-Driven Membrane Perturbation And Small Molecule Permeabilization, P. Thomas Vernier, Yinghua Sun, Martin A. Gundersen Jan 2006

Nanoelectropulse-Driven Membrane Perturbation And Small Molecule Permeabilization, P. Thomas Vernier, Yinghua Sun, Martin A. Gundersen

Bioelectrics Publications

Background
Nanosecond, megavolt-per-meter pulsed electric fields scramble membrane phospholipids, release intracellular calcium, and induce apoptosis. Flow cytometric and fluorescence microscopy evidence has associated phospholipid rearrangement directly with nanoelectropulse exposure and supports the hypothesis that the potential that develops across the lipid bilayer during an electric pulse drives phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization.

Results
In this work we extend observations of cells exposed to electric pulses with 30 ns and 7 ns durations to still narrower pulse widths, and we find that even 3 ns pulses are sufficient to produce responses similar to those reported previously. We show here that in contrast to …

Probabilisticmodel-Based Cell Tracking, Nezamoddin Nezamoddini-Kachouie, Paul Fieguth, Eric Jervis

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The study of cell behavior is of crucial importance in drug and disease research. The fields of bioinformatics and biotechnology rely on the collection, processing, and analysis of huge numbers of biocellular images, including cell features such as cell size, shape, and motility. However manual methods of inferring these values are so onerous that automated methods of cell tracking and segmentation are in high demand. In this paper, a novel model-based cell tracker is designed to locate and track individual cells. The proposed cell tracker has been successfully applied to track hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) based on identified cell locations …

The change in the membrane potential of Jurkat cells in response to nanosecond pulsed electric fields was studied for pulses with a duration of 60 ns and maximum field strengths of similar to 100 kV/cm (100 V/cell diameter). Membranes of Jurkat cells were stained with a fast voltage-sensitive dye, ANNINE-6, which has a subnanosecond voltage response time. A temporal resolution of 5 ns was achieved by the excitation of this dye with a tunable laser pulse. The laser pulse was synchronized with the applied electric field to record images at times before, during, and after exposure. When exposing the Jurkat …

Waging War Against Terror: An Essay For Sandy Levinson, Philip Bobbitt Jan 2006

Waging War Against Terror: An Essay For Sandy Levinson, Philip Bobbitt

Georgia Law Review

Wars are acts of State, and therefore there has never been a "war on terror." Of course states have fought terrorism, in many guises, for centuries. But a war on terror had to await the development of states-including virtual states like al Qaeda's global ummah 2-whose constitutional order was not confined to a particular territory or national group and for whom terror could therefore be a permanent state of international affairs, either sought in order to prevent persons within a state's control from resisting oppression by accessing global, empowering resources and networks, or suffered because other states wished to press …

Economics Of Feeding Distillers Grains To Diary Cows, Alvaro Garcia, Gary Taylor Jan 2006

Economics Of Feeding Distillers Grains To Diary Cows, Alvaro Garcia, Gary Taylor

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Dairy producers need reliable information before purchasing specific feeds. Along with the price of a commodity it is very important to have a complete nutrient analysis of the feed as well as an estimation of its energy content. The cost/nutrient method can be used to evaluate the economics of using distillers grains versus other feeds.
