The Role Of Electrospinning In The Emerging Field Of Nanomedicine, S. Y. Chew, Y. Wen, Yuris A. Dzenis, K. W. Leong Jan 2006

The Role Of Electrospinning In The Emerging Field Of Nanomedicine, S. Y. Chew, Y. Wen, Yuris A. Dzenis, K. W. Leong

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The fact that in vivo the extracellular matrix or substratum with which cells interact often includes topography at the nanoscale underscores the importance of investigating cell-substrate interactions and performing cell culture at the submicron scale. An important and exciting direction of research in nanomedicine would be to gain an understanding and exploit the cellular response to nanostructures. Electrospinning is a simple and versatile technique that can produce a macroporous scaffold comprising randomly oriented or aligned nanofibers. It can also accommodate the incorporation of drug delivery function into the fibrous scaffold. Endowed with both topographical and biochemical signals such electrospun nanofibrous …

Influence Of Lysobacter Enzymogenes Strain C3 On Nematodes, J. Chen, W. H. Moore, Gary Yuen, D. Kobayashi, E.P. Caswell-Chen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Chitinolytic microflora may contribute to biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes by causing decreased egg viability through degradation of egg shells. Here, the influence of Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3 on Caenorhabditis elegans, Heterodera schachtii, Meloidogyne javanica, Pratylenchus penetrans, and Aphelenchoides fragariae is described. Exposure of C. elegans to L. enzymogenes strain C3 on agar resulted in almost complete elimination of egg production and death of 94% of hatched juveniles after 2 d. Hatch of H. schachtii eggs was about 50% on a lawn of L. enzymogenes strain C3 on agar as compared to 80% on a lawn of E. coli …

Sequential Processing Of A Mitochondrial Tandem Protein: Insights Into Protein Import In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Oleh Khalimonchuk, Martin Ott, Soledad Funes, Kai Ostermann, Gerhard Rödel, Johannes M. Herrmann Jan 2006

Sequential Processing Of A Mitochondrial Tandem Protein: Insights Into Protein Import In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Oleh Khalimonchuk, Martin Ott, Soledad Funes, Kai Ostermann, Gerhard Rödel, Johannes M. Herrmann

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The sequencing of the genome of Schizosaccharomyces pombe revealed the presence of a number of genes encoding tandem proteins, some of which are mitochondrial components. One of these proteins (pre-Rsm22- Cox11) consists of a fusion of Rsm22, a component of the mitochondrial ribosome, and Cox11, a factor required for copper insertion into cytochrome oxidase. Since in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Cox11 is physically attached to the mitochondrial ribosome, it was suggested that the tandem organization of Rsm22-Cox11 is used to covalently tie the mitochondrial ribosome to Cox11 in S. pombe. We report here that pre-Rsm22-Cox11 is matured in two subsequent …

A Characterization Of Subterranean Termites In Nebraska Using Micro-Morphological And Molecular Techniques, Timothy J. Husen, Shripat T. Kamble, Julie M. Stone

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Recent studies have demonstrated a great potential for the use of molecular biology in Reticulitermes species identification and to study other aspects of termite biology. This study utilized micro-morphological identification and microsatellite Simple Sequence Length Polymorphic (SSLP) DNA genotyping to characterize subterranean termites collected from 73 locations across the state of Nebraska. Morphological characters of soldier termites from 30/73 collection sites revealed the presence of two species, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) and R. tibialis Banks. Morphology of the gular plate ratio was used for species differentiation. Deoxyribonucelic acid (DNA) was extracted from termite workers (from all samples) and used as a …

First Report Of Sudden Death Syndrome Of Soybean Caused By Fusarium Solani F. Sp. Glycines In Nebraska, A. D. Ziems, L. J. Giesler, G. Y. Yuen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

During August of 2004, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) plants exhibiting symptoms typical of sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc. f. sp. glycines (= Fusarium virguliforme Akoi, O'Donnell, Homma, & Lattanzi) (1) were observed in Nemaha and Pierce counties in eastern Nebraska. Leaf symptoms ranged from small chlorotic spots to prominent interveinal necrosis on plants at R5-R6 growth stages. Taproots of symptomatic plants were plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with hymexazol, ampicillin, and rifampicin (HAR). Resulting fungal isolates grew slowly and developed masses of blue macroconidia, characteristic of F. solani f. sp. glycines …

Avenacin Production In Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis Stolonifera) And Its Influence On The Host Range Of Gaeumannomyces Graminis, S. L. Thomas, P. Bonello, P. E. Lipps, Michael J. Boehm Jan 2006

Avenacin Production In Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis Stolonifera) And Its Influence On The Host Range Of Gaeumannomyces Graminis, S. L. Thomas, P. Bonello, P. E. Lipps, Michael J. Boehm

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Avenacinase activity has been shown to be a key factor determining the host range of Gaeumannomyces graminis on oats (Avena sativa). G. graminis var. avenae produces avenacinase, which detoxifies the oat root saponin avenacin, enabling it to infect oats. G. graminis var. tritici does not produce avenacinase and is unable to infect oats. G. graminis var. avenae is also reported to incite take-all patch on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera). It is unknown whether creeping bentgrass produces avenacin and if the avenacin-avenacinase interaction influences G. graminis pathogenicity on creeping bentgrass. The root extracts of six creeping bentgrass …

Fungicide Sensitivity Of Sclerotinia Homoeocarpa From Golf Courses In Ohio, Young-Ki Jo, Amy L. Niver, Joseph W. Rimelspach, Michael J. Boehm Jan 2006

Fungicide Sensitivity Of Sclerotinia Homoeocarpa From Golf Courses In Ohio, Young-Ki Jo, Amy L. Niver, Joseph W. Rimelspach, Michael J. Boehm

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Managing dollar spot, the most common and chronic disease on intensively cultivated turfgrass, relies on the judicious use of fungicides. The heavy use of fungicides has led to the development of isolates of Sclerotinia homoeocarpa insensitive to several classes of fungicides, including benzimidazoles, demethylation-inhibitors, and dicarboximides. In vitro fungicide sensitivity assays using single discriminatory concentrations of thiophanate-methyl, propiconazole, and iprodione were developed in this study for evaluating field efficacy of these fungicides and the prevalence of fungicide insensitivity within S. homoeocarpa isolated from golf courses throughout Ohio. Discriminatory concentrations for these fungicides were determined to be: thiophanate-methyl = 1,000 μg …

Assessment Of Water Quality Trends In The Upper Cumberland River Basin: Focus On Pathogen Impairment, Kentucky Water Resources Institute Jan 2006

Assessment Of Water Quality Trends In The Upper Cumberland River Basin: Focus On Pathogen Impairment, Kentucky Water Resources Institute

KWRRI Research Reports

This project consisted of analyzing existing water quality data for streams in the Upper Cumberland River Basin, with a particular focus on pathogen trends. According to the most recent 303(d) list of Kentucky waters, the majority of streams assessed in the Upper Cumberland Basin are impaired for primary recreational contact as a result of pathogens. The state pathogen standard for primary contact recreation is expressed in a dual form which specifies that the 30-day geometric mean of fecal coliform counts not exceed 200 colonies per 100 mL (on a minimum of five samples) and not more than 20 percent of …

A Curvature-Mediated Mechanism For Localization Of Lipids To Bacterial Poles, Kerwyn Casey Huang, Ranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ned S. Wingreen Jan 2006

A Curvature-Mediated Mechanism For Localization Of Lipids To Bacterial Poles, Kerwyn Casey Huang, Ranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ned S. Wingreen

Physics

Subcellular protein localization is a universal feature of eukaryotic cells, and the ubiquity of protein localization in prokaryotic species is now acquiring greater appreciation. Though some targeting anchors are known, the origin of polar and division-site localization remains mysterious for a large fraction of bacterial proteins. Ultimately, the molecular components responsible for such symmetry breaking must employ a high degree of self-organization. Here we propose a novel physical mechanism, based on the two-dimensional curvature of the membrane, for spontaneous lipid targeting to the poles and division site of rod-shaped bacterial cells. If one of the membrane components has a large …

Honor Thy Mother: The Supreme Court's Jurisprudence Of Motherhood, Laura Oren Jan 2006

Honor Thy Mother: The Supreme Court's Jurisprudence Of Motherhood, Laura Oren

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The United States Supreme Court's views about motherhood must be teased out from holdings it fails to connect into a coherent whole. The Justices have considered issues relating to women's physical and social reproductive roles in four major areas: comparative family relationships (unwed mothers versus unwed fathers), dependent mothers, mothers in the workplace, and the right to choose or refuse to become a mother. Despite some positive developments and much lip service, the Court's jurisprudence of motherhood fails to follow one of the fundamental precepts of our culture - "Honor Thy Mother."
