Calibrating Patent Lifetimes, Eric E. Johnson Jan 2006

Calibrating Patent Lifetimes, Eric E. Johnson

Faculty Articles

The patent system could better achieve its primary mission of incentivizing technological innovation by moving away from the onesize-fits-all 20-year term for patents and moving to a system of varying durations for different categories of invention. The current patent duration is arbitrary, the result of entrenched historical accident. Allowing upward variance from the 20-year term in discrete categories of invention offers the prospect of boosting innovation in impoverished technological sectors. Allowing downward variance in other categories would benefit overall social welfare by removing needless technological monopolization and associated deadweight loss. Current economic models and available economic data do not allow …

Clark University Academic Catalog [2005-2006], Clark University

Clark University Academic Catalogs

Annual academic catalog for the 2005-2006 academic year at Clark University.

Clark University academic catalogs contain academic announcements, course listings and descriptions, degrees and degree requirements, registers of instructor and administrator names, information on buildings and grounds, Clark history, and more. They have had various titles throughout the decades, but for consistency we collectively refer to them as academic catalogs across all titles.

Enhanced Cerenkov Second-Harmonic Generation In Patterned Lithium Niobate, Cong Deng, Joseph W. Haus, Andrew Sarangan, Aziz Mahfoud, Concita Sibilia, Michael Scalora, Aleksei M. Zheltikov

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

We present experimental results of second harmonic generation enhancement through the resonance of the band edge in a photonic crystal based on lithium niobate. Proton exchange technique was used to fabricate a waveguide near the surface of the lithium niobate substrate. The photonic crystal structure over the waveguide was made by UV laser interferometry. Subsequently experiments were designed to quantify the Cerenkov second-harmonic generation (CSHG) radiated into the substrate. The SHG radiated inside the waveguides was also experimentally investigated. In our experiments, the second guided mode of the waveguide was tuned to the band edge resonance to enhance the second …

Food For Early Succession Birds: Relationships Among Arthropods, Shrub Vegetation, And Soil, Richard N. Conner, Daniel Saenz, D. Brent Burt Jan 2006

Food For Early Succession Birds: Relationships Among Arthropods, Shrub Vegetation, And Soil, Richard N. Conner, Daniel Saenz, D. Brent Burt

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

During spring and early summer, shrub- and herbaceous-level vegetation provides nesting and foraging habitat for many birds. This study examined relationships among arthropod biomass and abundance, foliage leaf surface area, vegetation ground cover, soil characteristics, humidity, and temperature. Arthropod biomass was negatively correlated with humidity, and positively correlated with herbaceous ground cover and clay content in the soil. Management practices promoting herbaceous vegetation may enhance arthropod availability and thus foraging conditions for birds.

How Do Aesthetics Affect Our Ecology?, Zsuzsi I. Kovacs, Carri J. Leroy, Dylan G. Fischer, Sandra Lubarsky, William Burke

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Beauty is a powerful force that affects both our emotions and our ecological practices, yet aesthetic values remain understated and under-discussed in ecology. Here we invite discussion about the influence of beauty on ecological research by outlining: 1) how aesthetics affect the practice of ecology, and 2) how aesthetics affect the implementation of ecological research on the landscape. The aesthetic sensibilities of ecologists develop through personal experiences and are enriched by professional training, including ecological coursework, fieldwork, research and discussion. Many ecologists choose an ecological career because it offers an opportunity to work in beautiful, natural places. However, these values …

Risks Of Atrazine Use To Federally Listed Endangered Barton Springs Salamanders (Eurycea Sosorum)

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

The purpose of this assessment is to make an "effects determination" for the Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum) by evaluating the potential direct and indirect effects of the herbicide atrazine on the survival, growth, and reproduction of this Federally endangered species. This assessment was completed in accordance with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Endangered Species Consultation Handbook (USFWS/NMFS, 1998), the August 5, 2004 Joint Counterpart Endangered Species Act Section 7 Consultation Regulations specified in 50 CFR Part 402 (USFWS/NMFS, 2004a; FR 69 47732-47762), and procedures outlined in the Agency's Overview Document (U.S. …

Humor And Laughter May Influence Health. I. History And Background, Mary Payne Bennett, Cecile A. Lengacher Jan 2006

Humor And Laughter May Influence Health. I. History And Background, Mary Payne Bennett, Cecile A. Lengacher

Nursing Faculty Publications

Articles in both the lay and professional literature have extolled the virtues of humor, many giving the impression that the health benefits of humor are well documented by the scientific and medical community. The concept that humor or laughter can be therapeutic goes back to biblical times and this belief has received varying levels of support from the scientific community at different points in its history. Current research indicates that using humor is well accepted by the public and is frequently used as a coping mechanism. However, the scientific evidence of the benefits of using humor on various health related …

Karst Flash Floods: An Example From The Dinaric Karst (Croatia), Ognjen Bonacci, I. Ljubenkov, T. Roje-Bonacci

KIP Articles

Flash floods constitute one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters worldwide. This paper explains the karst flash flood phenomenon, which represents a special kind of flash flood. As the majority of flash floods karst flash floods are caused by intensive short-term precipitation in an area whose surface rarely exceeds a few square kilometres. The characteristics of all flash floods are their short duration, small areal extent, high flood peaks and rapid flows, and heavy loss of life and property. Karst flash floods have specific characteristics due to special conditions for water circulation, which exist in karst terrains. During karst …
