A Cognitive Theory Of Trust, Claire Hill, Erin O'Hara O'Connor Jan 2006

A Cognitive Theory Of Trust, Claire Hill, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Articles

Interpersonal trust is currently receiving widespread attention in the academy. Many legal scholars incorrectly assume that interpersonal trust is an unmitigated good (or bad) and that legal policy should therefore be crafted to maximize (or minimize) trust. A more nuanced understanding of trust indicates instead that it should be promoted or discouraged, depending on the context. Such an understanding needs to reflect the fact that trust and distrust can, and often do, coexist. In most relationships, the parties trust one another with regard to some matters and yet distrust one another with regard to other matters. More specifically, developing a …

A Quantitative Proxy Of Diatom Dissolution With Implications For Biological Production In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific Over The Past 25,000 Years, Jonathan Warnock Jan 2006

A Quantitative Proxy Of Diatom Dissolution With Implications For Biological Production In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific Over The Past 25,000 Years, Jonathan Warnock

Honors Capstones

Here we present a quantitative proxy for determining opal dissolution in deep sea sediment cores. The ratio of organic carbonxalcite production in the ocean is thought to affect global climate by changing CO2 levels in the atmosphere. The diatom-dominated opal producers generate significant organic carbon and have the ability to sequester organic carbon from the atmosphere to the ocean floor. Thus using diatom accumulation rates to reconstruct diatom production is important to climate research. However, opal and organic carbon accumulation rates reflect both variable production and preservation. Separating these factors is crucial to estimating past opal and organic carbon fluxes. …

Evaluation Of Prefermentation As A Unit Process Upon Biological Nutrient Removal Including Biokinetic And Wastewater Parameters, Terrence Mccue Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Prefermentation As A Unit Process Upon Biological Nutrient Removal Including Biokinetic And Wastewater Parameters, Terrence Mccue

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to provide a controlled comparison of identical continuous flow BNR processes both with and without prefermentation in order to provide a stronger, more quantitative, technical basis for design engineers to evaluate the potential benefits of prefermentation to EBPR in treating domestic wastewater. In addition, the even less understood effect of prefermentation on denitrification kinetics and anoxic phosphorus (P) uptake was studied and quantified. Other aspects of BNR performance, which might change due to use of prefermentation, will also be addressed, including anaerobic stabilization. Potential benefits to BNR processes derived from prefermentation are compared and …

Molecular Structure-Nonlinear Optical Property Relationships For A Series Of Polymethine And Squaraine Molecules, Jie Fu Jan 2006

Molecular Structure-Nonlinear Optical Property Relationships For A Series Of Polymethine And Squaraine Molecules, Jie Fu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports on the investigation of the relationships between molecular structure and two-photon absorption (2PA) properties for a series of polymethine and squaraine molecules. Current and emerging applications exploiting the quadratic dependence upon laser intensity, such as two-photon fluorescence imaging, three-dimensional microfabrication, optical data storage and optical limiting, have motivated researchers to find novel materials exhibiting strong 2PA. Organic materials are promising candidates because their linear and nonlinear optical properties can be optimized for applications by changing their structures through molecular engineering. Polymethine and squaraine dyes are particularly interesting because they are fluorescent and showing large 2PA. We used …

Health Attitudes, Knowledge And Literacy Of Primary Caregivers With Elementary School Children, Susan Stuib Jan 2006

Health Attitudes, Knowledge And Literacy Of Primary Caregivers With Elementary School Children, Susan Stuib

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that physical activity and healthy eating in elementary school children are the exception rather than the norm. Increased attention to the rising rates of childhood obesity, coupled with the recognition that changes in the school environment are critical to reducing this trend, has intensified the need to adopt better practices in school nutrition, physical activity and physical education. Apart from being physically active, children need to learn fundamental motor skills and develop health related physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition). Primary caregivers play an important part in developing and teaching …

Organometallic Ruthenium Complexes Of Novel Thiosemicarbazones, Floyd A. Beckford, Amon T. Holt

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We present the preliminary results of a study of two novel thiosemicarbazones (TSCs) and theirruthenium complexes. The TSCs were prepared by refluxing thiosemicarbazide with 9-anthraldehyde or benzanthrone in ethanol for 3 hours. The metal complex of each ligand (complex I =[(r|6 -C6H6 )Ru(9-ant-TSC )(C1)]C1 and complex II= [(r|6 -C6H6 )Ru(benz-TSC)(Cl)]Cl) was prepared by refluxing the appropriate TSC with [(r|6 -C6H6 )RuCl 2 ] r The compounds were characterized using infrared, ultraviolet-visible, and NMRspectroscopy. Two different methods, the disk diffusion test and luminometry, were used to test the compounds against a variety of different bacterial strains for antibacterial activity. The most …

Development Of In Vitro Regeneration Protocols For Arkansas Rice Varieties (Oryza Sativa L.), Moytri Roy Chowdhury, Audrei Dabul, John Hubstenberger, Gregory Phillips Jan 2006

Development Of In Vitro Regeneration Protocols For Arkansas Rice Varieties (Oryza Sativa L.), Moytri Roy Chowdhury, Audrei Dabul, John Hubstenberger, Gregory Phillips

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Efficient regeneration of in vitro cultures of Oryza sativa L.is essential for successful manipulation of recombinant DNA technologies. Arkansas rice varieties perform better on modified Gamborg (B5)media, than on Murashige and Skoog (MS) orN6 media, which are more frequently reported in the literature. While 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is commonly used for regeneration treatments of rice, Picloram (Pic) provides a possible alternative as a synthetic auxin source. Although regeneration frequency appears low, complete regeneration (whole plantlets) was faster and development of the shoot was superior on picloram treatments as compared to 2,4-D. Screening 5 Arkansas varieties for regeneration efficiency on 3 …

The Adaptation Of The Fibrinolytic Enzyme Apcfib On Human Blood Stains, Gabriela Sanchez Jan 2006

The Adaptation Of The Fibrinolytic Enzyme Apcfib On Human Blood Stains, Gabriela Sanchez

Whittier Scholars Program

Current research is aimed at testing a purified solution of a fibrinolytic enzyme. Apcfib, which comes from the venom of Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti (Florida cottonmouth Snake) to dissolve blood stains on two different makes of fabric (80% cotton/ 20% polyester and 100% polyester) and test the enzyme’s ability to dissolve blood stains when combined with a protease, in this case thermolysin, Treatment of blood stains on 100% polyester was more effective overall than on the 80% cotton/100% polyester fabric. 2.0x10^ -4 mol/min of Apcfib activity added to a 200L of blood stain was the minimum needed in order to significantly …

Contagious Discourse: Germs, Mass Media, And The Shaping Of Reality, Amy Richardson Ballagh

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Over the past two decades, mass media coverage of certain infectious diseases has become more abundant. News reports of many of these contagious illnesses invoke fear in many people, such as Ebola and pandemic influenza; multidrug-resistant strains of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis; and agents of biological warfare, a concern that is now at the forefront with many Americans due to the most recent act of bioterrorism on American soil following the events of September 11th. This dissertation focuses on the American public's perception of infectious diseases, particularly as portrayed in the cultural science curriculum. I examine the cyclic nature …

Viruses are the most common biological entities in the marine environment. There has not been a global survey of these viruses, and consequently, it is not known what types of viruses are in Earth's oceans or how they are distributed. Metagenomic analyses of 184 viral assemblages collected over a decade and representing 68 sites in four major oceanic regions showed that most of the viral sequences were not similar to those in the current databases. There was a distinct “marine-ness” quality to the viral assemblages. Global diversity was very high, presumably several hundred thousand of species, and regional richness varied …

Improving Abiotic Stress Resistance In Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis L.) By Mutagenesis And Agrobacterium Mediated Transformation, Ehab Mohamed Rabei Metwali Gharieb Jan 2006

Improving Abiotic Stress Resistance In Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis L.) By Mutagenesis And Agrobacterium Mediated Transformation, Ehab Mohamed Rabei Metwali Gharieb

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Abiotic environmental stress such as drought, salinity and low temperature are common conditions that adversely affect plant growth and crop production. Breeding for crop resistance to abiotic stress is difficult due to its multigenic nature. An alternative approach is through DNA mutation and DNA transfer. These approaches were employed and tested in this research and comparison between them was carried out. NEU and NMU induced mutant lines and control plants were sub-cultured many times on maintenance medium and stored at 5°c for 2 years and then tested for salt and hydroxyproline resistance as in-vitro and in-vivo plants and proline content …

The Effect Of Pre-Weaning Feeding Behaviour On Post-Weaning Feeding Behaviour In Pigs Weaned At 3, 4 And 5 Weeks Of Age, Christos Antonios Tsourgiannis Jan 2006

The Effect Of Pre-Weaning Feeding Behaviour On Post-Weaning Feeding Behaviour In Pigs Weaned At 3, 4 And 5 Weeks Of Age, Christos Antonios Tsourgiannis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A program of study was undertaken to asses the effect of pre-weaning feeding behaviour on post-weaning feeding behaviour in pigs weaned at various ages (3, 4 and 5 weeks of age) and to identify ways of increasing their post-weaning feed intake. The studies were constructed using time extensive continuous recording methods in order to monitor the 'true' behaviour unbiased by sampling errors. Piglets weaned at 3 weeks of age had the ability to grow faster and became significantly heavier at six weeks of age (3W: 12.S06 ± 0.629 kg) than piglets that had to extent their stay for one (4W: …

Zero Effluent Stretch Target (Zest), Orla O'Connor Jan 2006

Zero Effluent Stretch Target (Zest), Orla O'Connor

Theses

The goals of this project were to assess the viability of avoiding water use and of “cascading” water uses, i.e. using outlet water from one process in another activity, possibly with some purification, including the upgrading of the final effluent stream for internal reuse. Water use has been inventoried at FMC Biopolymer, Cork. Avoidance and reduction measures were identified that could reduce water consumption from 49m /hr to 19 m /hr (a reduction in excess of 60%), with an annual saving in excess of €350,000. These projects were assessed for feasibility and implementation. Potential streams that could be subject to …

Enhancing Science Education Through Engaging Visual Content, David Kavanagh Jan 2006

Enhancing Science Education Through Engaging Visual Content, David Kavanagh

Theses

In recent years a decline in the number of Irish students choosing to study science, at second level and on into third level, has become potentially harmful to the desired creation of a science-based knowledge economy. A primary contributing factor towards this decline is a lack of interest in the subject within the classroom, as was established by The Task Force on the Physical Sciences in 2002.

The primary aim of this Masters research is to investigate the role of visualisation in making the study of science more accessible and engaging to students to counter this decline. To this end …

Educating Students To Be Better Citizens: Effects Of Service-Learning Courses On Civic Attitudes And Engagement, Aubree Rae Johnson Jan 2006

Educating Students To Be Better Citizens: Effects Of Service-Learning Courses On Civic Attitudes And Engagement, Aubree Rae Johnson

Honors Program Theses

Why focus on democratic outcomes? According to Benson, Harkavy, and Hartley (2005), service learning can be defined as: "an active, creative [pedagogy] that integrates community service with academic study in order to enhance a student's capacity to think critically, solve problems practically, and function as a lifelong moral, democratic citizen in a democratic society" (p. 189). Given this definition of service-learning, it follows that "service learning should work to develop strategies and actions to help fulfill the democratic promise of America's colleges and universities in particular and the democratic promise of American society in general. We should, therefore, evaluate service-learning …

Random Lasing In Weakly Scattering Systems, X. Wu, W. Fang, Alexey Yamilov, A. A. Asatryan, L. C. Botten, Andrey A. Chabanov, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present detailed experimental and numerical studies of random lasing in weakly scattering systems. The interference of scattered light, which is weak in the passive systems, is greatly enhanced in the presence of high gain, providing coherent and resonant feedback for lasing. The lasing modes are confined in the vicinity of the pumped volume due to absorption of emitted light outside it. In the ballistic regime where the size of the gain volume is less than the scattering mean free path, lasing oscillation occurs along the direction in which the gain volume is most extended, producing directional laser output. The …

For the success of NASA's new vision for space exploration to Moon, Mars and beyond, exposures from the hazards of severe space radiation in deep space long duration missions is ''a must solve'' problem The payload penalty demands a very stringent requirement on the design of the spacecrafts for human deep space missions. Langley has developed state-of-the-art radiation protection and shielding technology for space missions. The exploration beyond low Earth orbit (LEO) to enable routine access to space require protection from the hazards of the accumulated exposures of space radiation, galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE), and …

The SMART system is a special purpose server developed by ETRI and designed for efficient streaming services over high speed networks. The SMART server has one or more special purpose NS (Network-Storage) card. The NS card has several disks that store multimedia contents. However all of the multimedia contents to be serviced cannot be stored at the server. In this paper, we will describe the storage management mechanism in design and implementation aspects. With this storage management mechanism, the SMART server can provide effectiveness in managing storage and distributing some contents from a source station to streaming service servers.
